Chapter 10 - The File Marked E.H.

“Eliza.”

Ethan opened his eyes.

She nearly collapsed.

The bullet had grazed his shoulder.

Daniel had fired at Adrian.

Adrian had pulled Ethan into the path.

Then escaped through the marina.

Isabel was alive.

Lucian approached his mother slowly.

Twenty-two years stood between them.

Isabel touched his face.

“My boy.”

Lucian closed his eyes.

Eliza turned away.

Some reunions deserved privacy.

Preston Hale was arrested.

Daniel Cross disappeared with Adrian.

Ethan was taken to the hospital.

Eliza rode with him.

Not as a reconciled wife.

As someone who had loved him for twelve years and refused to pretend those years meant nothing.

At the hospital, Ethan said, “You don't owe me this.”

“I know.”

That answer made him cry.

Two days later, investigators finished cataloging Adrian's underground archive.

One file remained encrypted.

E.H.

Everyone assumed Ethan Hartwell.

It wasn't.

The password came from Margaret's letter.

ELLISON.

The file opened.

ELIZA HARTWELL.

Inside was Margaret's final legal trust.

Eliza's seventeen percent was only part of her inheritance.

Margaret had created a controlling trust that activated if criminal interference with the company could be proven.

It transferred her remaining holdings to Eliza.

Forty-two percent total.

Combined with Lucian's legitimate shares, they controlled the corporation.

Adrian's plan was finished.

Unless he destroyed the trust.

Eliza immediately filed it with federal investigators.

For the first time, she stopped asking Lucian what she should do.

She hired her own attorney.

Her own accountant.

Her own forensic team.

She also entered Hartwell Strategies headquarters and called an emergency employee meeting.

Ethan attended remotely from the hospital.

Eliza stood before hundreds of people.

“For years, work bearing my ideas left this company under someone else's name.”

Ethan closed his eyes on the screen.

“That's changing.”

She announced an independent investigation.

No cover-ups.

No protection for Ethan.

No protection for herself.

Employees would be paid before executives.

Clients would receive full disclosure.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Eliza should have been credited as co-founder from the beginning.”

The room became silent.

“I didn't give her that title because I was insecure enough to believe her brilliance made mine smaller.”

Eliza stared at the screen.

He continued.

“That was my failure. Not hers.”

Afterward, she found Lucian waiting outside.

“You were good in there.”

“I was terrified.”

“They're not mutually exclusive.”

She smiled.

It came more easily now.

“Coffee?”

“Is that how feared mafia bosses celebrate corporate transparency?”

“Usually there's a violinist.”

She laughed.

They walked.

For the first time, Lucian told her about himself.

Not Valente.

Lucian.

His mother disappearing.

His father's silence.

Growing up believing love meant vulnerability.

Building an empire around never needing anyone.

Eliza listened.

Then said, “That sounds lonely.”

“It was efficient.”

“That's not the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I'm beginning to notice.”

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Ethan.

Not emotional.

Not manipulative.

A document.

DIVORCE PETITION — SIGNED.

Below it:

You deserve the choice I should have given you years ago.

Eliza stared at it.

Lucian did not ask.

She told him anyway.

“Ethan signed.”

“How do you feel?”

“Sad.”

“Anything else?”

“Free.”

Lucian nodded.

No smile.

No opportunistic step closer.

That restraint mattered.

Then his phone rang.

Isabel.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

“What happened?”

He put the phone on speaker.

Isabel's voice shook.

“I remembered what Adrian meant by E.H.”

Eliza frowned.

“What?”

“It wasn't only Eliza Hartwell.”

A pause.

“Margaret used those initials for someone else.”

“Who?”

May you like

Before Isabel could answer, the hospital fire alarm began screaming through her phone.

Then the line went dead.
