Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Beneath the Ballroom

Lucian did not move.
For the first time since Eliza met him, the most controlled man in the room looked defenseless.
“Where?”
Claire answered carefully.
“I don't know.”
Lucian's expression closed again.
“You just said she's alive.”
“I know because Margaret received letters.”
“Show me.”
Claire produced copies.
Isabel Valente had disappeared twenty-two years earlier.
Lucian had been sixteen.
He had been told she died in an accident overseas.
Instead, the letters suggested Vincent Valente had hidden her after Adrian threatened her.
Lucian read every page twice.
Eliza remained beside him.
She did not touch him.
Not until his hand began trembling.
Then she quietly placed hers over it.
He looked at her.
The same gesture he had offered outside the gala.
Now returned.
“Thank you,” he said.
They traced the letters to an abandoned storage property owned through one of Preston Hale's companies.
Below the Halcyon Grand.
The gala had been held directly above it.
They returned that evening with investigators and security.
A concealed service elevator descended beneath the parking garage.
The underground rooms contained archives.
Thousands of documents.
Adrian had kept everything.
Blackmail.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Eliza found files on Ethan dating back to college.
Lucian found files on his father.
Claire found her own.
Then Eliza saw hers.
ELIZA ELLISON HARTWELL.
Not Hartwell.
Ellison Hartwell.
Inside were photographs spanning almost her entire life.
School.
College.
Her wedding.
Her grandmother's funeral.
Her stomach twisted.
“He watched me for years.”
Lucian's jaw tightened.
“He needed to know when Margaret transferred control.”
A second folder contained copies of Eliza's work for Hartwell Strategies.
Proposals.
Financial models.
Acquisition plans.
All credited publicly to Ethan.
Eliza looked at him.
Ethan could barely meet her eyes.
“I should have put your name on them.”
“Yes.”
“I told myself we were a team.”
“We were, until only one of us got the credit.”
He nodded.
No excuses this time.
Then Lucian found another contract.
A purchase agreement scheduled to execute at midnight.
Preston Hale intended to acquire Hartwell Strategies for almost nothing once the fraud investigation destroyed its valuation.
Adrian had manufactured the collapse.
Ethan's humiliation of Eliza had merely made the evening easier.
If Eliza had remained outside, she would never have taken her seat beside Lucian.
Never seen Margaret's evidence.
Never discovered her voting shares.
Ethan sank into a chair.
“I did exactly what he needed.”
Eliza stared at him.
“Because you were embarrassed by me.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
No defense.
That mattered.
It did not erase anything.
But it mattered.
A security guard called Lucian from the next room.
They had found a tunnel.
It led beneath the ballroom.
Inside was a surveillance station.
Monitors showed every major room in the hotel.
One screen was still active.
A live feed.
Preston Hale sat inside a car.
Beside him was Daniel Cross.
And in the back seat sat an older man.
Adrian.
Lucian reached for the radio.
Then Eliza saw the fourth person.
An older woman.
Silver hair.
Her hands bound.
Lucian stopped breathing.
“Mother.”
Adrian looked directly into the hidden camera.
As if he knew they were watching.
Then he held up a phone.
Eliza's rang.
She answered.
Adrian's voice came through.
“You found her.”
Lucian took the phone.
“If you hurt her—”
“I kept her alive for twenty-two years.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
“For what?”
Adrian smiled at the camera.
“For tonight.”
The feed shifted.
A second camera appeared.
This one showed Eliza's house.
A man entered through the back door.
Eliza's blood froze.
May you like
Adrian whispered, “You should have checked who was waiting at home.”
Then the screen went black.
