Chapter 4 - The Contract Ethan Never Read

“Stop the video.”

Lucian did not shout.

He did not need to.

The screen went black.

Eliza turned toward him.

“You recognized him.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Ethan was already moving toward the exit.

Two security guards blocked him.

“Eliza,” Ethan said. “That recording isn't what it looks like.”

She almost admired the sentence.

Twelve years of marriage and that was what he had.

“Then tell me what it looks like.”

“I was twenty-four.”

“You were old enough to marry me.”

“I loved you.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Before or after you learned about the inheritance?”

Ethan flinched.

There.

A tiny answer.

Eliza looked at Lucian.

“Who was the man?”

“My uncle.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Your uncle?”

“Adrian Valente.”

Mrs. Mercer inhaled sharply.

“I thought Adrian disappeared.”

“He did.”

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

Eliza stared at the dead screen.

“The year Ethan met me.”

“Yes.”

“Is he dead?”

Lucian's pause frightened her.

“I don't know.”

Security restored the lights.

Guests murmured.

Lucian ordered the ballroom reopened and quietly told everyone the gala was ending.

Within minutes, the room began emptying.

Ethan remained.

Eliza wanted him there.

Not because she trusted him.

Because she wanted answers.

Lucian led them into a private library.

Mrs. Mercer followed.

A fire burned beneath a marble mantel.

Eliza remained standing.

“Start at the beginning.”

Lucian opened another file.

“My father and your grandmother built a legitimate property investment company with Evelyn Mercer.”

Mrs. Mercer nodded.

“They bought distressed buildings. Restored them. Margaret was brilliant with numbers.”

“Why didn't I know?”

“Because the Valente family became complicated,” Lucian said.

That was one word for it.

“My grandfather had criminal interests. My father spent years separating our legitimate businesses from them. Margaret wanted you nowhere near that history.”

“And Adrian?”

“My father's younger brother. He wanted control.”

Lucian looked at Ethan.

“He apparently found another route.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Adrian told me Margaret had stolen from the Valentes.”

“And you believed him?” Eliza asked.

“I was broke.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“He offered me money.”

“For marrying me?”

“For getting close.”

The truth landed quietly.

Sometimes devastation did not explode.

Sometimes it simply removed the floor.

Eliza sat.

Ethan stepped toward her.

“I didn't marry you because of that.”

“Don't.”

“I met you because of Adrian. Yes.”

Her eyes closed.

“But I married you because I loved you.”

“You lied every day afterward.”

“I tried to get out.”

“By stealing my inheritance?”

“I didn't steal it.”

Lucian placed the transfer agreement down.

Ethan pointed at it.

“I never saw that document.”

Lucian studied him.

Eliza did too.

For the first time that evening, Ethan looked less guilty than confused.

“You expect me to believe that?” she asked.

“No. But it's true.”

“Your company received the assets.”

“My company received investment capital through a holding company.”

“Owned by me.”

“I didn't know that.”

Lucian leaned back.

“Then who handled the transaction?”

“My CFO.”

“Name.”

“Daniel Cross.”

Mrs. Mercer dropped her glass.

It shattered.

Everyone turned.

Her face had gone white.

“Evelyn?” Lucian asked.

She whispered, “Daniel Cross isn't his name.”

Eliza stood.

“You know him?”

“I knew his father.”

“Who?”

Mrs. Mercer looked at Lucian.

“Adrian.”

Silence.

Lucian pulled out his phone.

“Find Cross.”

His security chief answered immediately.

Lucian listened.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He lowered the phone.

“Cross left the gala seventeen minutes ago.”

Eliza remembered the anonymous messages.

Someone had been watching her.

“Could he have sent these?”

She showed Lucian.

His eyes narrowed.

“Possibly.”

Another message arrived.

Not text.

An address.

Eliza recognized it instantly.

Her grandmother's old house.

Then a photograph loaded.

The front door stood open.

A light burned upstairs.

Beneath it were five words.

MARGARET LEFT SOMETHING FOR YOU.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“No.”

Eliza looked at him.

“You recognize this?”

His voice dropped.

“That house has been empty for ten years.”

Lucian reached for his coat.

Then another photograph arrived.

Taken seconds earlier.

Someone was standing inside Margaret's bedroom.

May you like

Holding a sealed envelope.

On the front, in Margaret's handwriting, was Eliza's name.
