Chapter 3 - The Empty Chair Beside Lucian Valente

Nobody panicked.

People in rooms like this had learned that visible panic was expensive.

But Eliza saw the glances.

Security moved toward the doors.

Lucian remained beside her.

Ethan stared at the locked entrance.

“What is this?”

“Not mine,” Lucian said.

That frightened Eliza.

“Then whose?”

A security chief approached.

“Mr. Valente, we have a technical lockout.”

“Technical?”

“Someone accessed the ballroom control system.”

Lucian's expression sharpened.

“Find them.”

Eliza turned toward Ethan.

“My grandmother.”

“Not here.”

“Here is perfect.”

“Eliza.”

“What did she sign?”

Ethan looked around.

“Your grandmother was confused.”

Lucian became very still.

“Careful.”

Ethan ignored him.

“She was elderly. She had documents. Old holdings. Things she didn't understand anymore.”

“And somehow you understood them?”

“I was helping.”

Eliza laughed once.

“You visited her without telling me.”

Ethan said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Mrs. Mercer touched Eliza's arm.

“Margaret wasn't confused.”

“You knew her then?”

“Until the week she died.”

Eliza turned.

“I was told she stopped receiving visitors.”

“She stopped receiving you.”

Pain flashed through Eliza.

“Why?”

Mrs. Mercer looked toward Ethan.

Eliza followed her gaze.

“No.”

Ethan stepped backward.

“Eliza, listen—”

“You told me she didn't recognize me anymore.”

“She was sick.”

“You told me seeing me upset her.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From my grandmother?”

His silence became monstrous.

Lucian placed something on the table.

A folder.

“I had planned to give you this privately.”

Eliza stared at it.

“What is it?”

“Records.”

“Of what?”

“Margaret's ownership.”

Ethan moved suddenly.

“Don't.”

Everyone looked at him.

Too late.

That single word exposed more than any confession.

Eliza opened the folder.

Her grandmother had owned thirty-one percent of Ellison-Valente Holdings.

After corporate restructuring, those assets had moved through several shell entities.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Hartwell Strategic Ventures.

Ethan's company.

Her stomach turned.

“How?”

Lucian answered.

“A transfer agreement.”

“Signed by Margaret?”

“Yes.”

Ethan exhaled.

“See?”

Lucian looked at him.

“But witnessed by someone who died two years before the signature date.”

Ethan's face emptied.

Eliza stared at the document.

The witness.

Samuel Hartwell.

Ethan's father.

Dead in 2012.

The transfer dated 2014.

Her hands began shaking.

“You forged it.”

“No.”

“You forged my grandmother's signature.”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

“I can't explain something I didn't do.”

Lucian leaned forward.

“Your attorney filed it.”

Ethan's eyes flashed.

“My former attorney.”

“Convenient.”

Eliza closed the folder.

Twelve years.

Had Ethan married her for this?

The thought arrived so violently she almost pushed it away.

Then she remembered how quickly their relationship had begun.

How interested Ethan had been when he learned about Margaret.

How eager he had been to handle probate.

No.

She couldn't let one horrible night rewrite every memory.

Could she?

Lucian seemed to read her expression.

“Don't decide anything tonight that evidence hasn't earned.”

She looked at him.

That sentence steadied her.

Facts.

Not fear.

“What do you want from me?”

“The truth.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret asked my father to protect your interest.”

“Your father?”

“He failed.”

Lucian's voice tightened.

“I don't intend to.”

Eliza searched his face.

“You barely know me.”

“I know enough.”

“What does that mean?”

Before he answered, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every chandelier went dark.

Someone screamed.

Lucian immediately caught Eliza's wrist.

“Stay beside me.”

Emergency lights came on.

Red.

Dim.

Security moved.

A screen at the front of the ballroom suddenly illuminated.

White letters appeared against black.

WELCOME, ELIZA HARTWELL.

Eliza froze.

A second line appeared.

YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY ETHAN MARRIED YOU?

Ethan shouted, “Turn it off!”

Nobody moved.

A video file appeared.

Dated twelve years earlier.

The year Eliza met Ethan.

The image froze before playing.

It showed Ethan sitting across from an unidentified man.

A contract lay between them.

Eliza stepped closer.

“Play it.”

Ethan grabbed her arm.

“Don't.”

Lucian removed Ethan's hand.

“Touch her again and we have a different problem.”

The video began.

Young Ethan leaned toward the unseen man.

His voice filled the ballroom.

“If I marry Margaret Ellison's granddaughter, the inheritance becomes accessible through spousal control.”

Eliza stopped breathing.

Then the unseen man leaned into frame.

May you like

Lucian's face changed.

Because the man sitting across from Ethan was someone Lucian knew.
