Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind Hartwell Strategies

Eliza insisted on going.

Lucian insisted she would not go alone.

Ethan insisted on coming.

Nobody cared what Ethan insisted on anymore.

Yet Eliza allowed it.

If the house contained answers about their marriage, he would hear them beside her.

Three vehicles crossed the city.

Eliza rode with Lucian.

“You don't have to hold yourself together,” he said.

She looked out the window.

“I know.”

“You're doing it anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if I start crying, I might not stop.”

Lucian was quiet.

Then he said, “Stopping isn't required.”

She looked at him.

No judgment.

No cheap reassurance.

Just permission.

That nearly undid her.

“Why are you being kind to me?”

“Because kindness shouldn't require a motive.”

“That's an unusual philosophy for a feared mafia boss.”

His mouth twitched.

“Newspapers prefer simple nouns.”

“Are they wrong?”

“Not entirely.”

She appreciated the answer.

Margaret's house stood dark except for the upstairs window.

Security entered first.

Empty.

The envelope remained on the bed.

Eliza approached it.

Her grandmother's handwriting brought tears instantly.

My darling Eliza.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter and a flash drive.

Eliza read aloud.

“If you're reading this, someone finally became frightened enough to lead you here.”

She stopped.

Lucian's expression sharpened.

Margaret had anticipated this.

The letter continued.

“I made mistakes protecting you. Silence was the greatest.”

Eliza swallowed.

“Your inheritance was never simply money. It was ownership. More importantly, it was proof.”

Proof of what?

The flash drive held encrypted files.

Ethan stepped forward.

“I can have IT—”

“No,” Eliza said.

He stopped.

It was a tiny moment.

But something had changed.

For years Ethan had been the person she turned toward automatically.

Now she turned toward Lucian.

“Someone you trust?”

“Yes.”

Lucian's technician arrived remotely through a secure laptop.

The drive opened.

Folders appeared.

Financial records.

Contracts.

Audio recordings.

And one file named:

ELIZA — WHEN YOU ARE READY.

She clicked.

Margaret appeared on screen.

Older.

Frail.

Clear-eyed.

“Eliza, if you're watching this, Ethan Hartwell has probably told you I was confused.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Eliza's stomach tightened.

“I wasn't.”

Margaret explained that she discovered Adrian Valente had been siphoning funds from their company.

When she tried to expose him, Adrian targeted the easiest path to her shares.

Eliza.

“He found a young man with ambition and debt.”

Eliza looked at Ethan.

“He paid Ethan to meet you.”

Ethan whispered, “I know.”

Margaret continued.

“But something happened Adrian did not anticipate. Ethan fell in love with you.”

Eliza froze.

Ethan looked up.

Margaret said she had confronted him.

Ethan confessed everything.

Then begged for a chance to protect Eliza.

For several years, he apparently had.

Until Margaret discovered forged transfers.

“I don't know whether Ethan betrayed you or whether Adrian found another way. I only know the signatures are false.”

Eliza's anger shifted.

Not vanished.

Shifted.

Ethan had still lied.

Still humiliated her.

Still left her outside.

But perhaps he had not stolen the company.

The video continued.

“One more truth, sweetheart. Hartwell Strategies is successful because of you.”

Eliza blinked.

Margaret smiled.

“I've read the proposals you wrote. I've seen the contracts you corrected. Don't let anyone convince you that standing behind a successful man means you weren't carrying half the weight.”

Eliza covered her mouth.

Lucian looked away, granting her privacy without leaving.

Margaret's final words were simple.

“When the truth comes, choose yourself.”

The recording ended.

Ethan whispered, “Eliza.”

She turned.

“I did love you.”

“I believe you.”

Hope flashed across his face.

She continued.

“And tonight you still left me outside.”

His hope disappeared.

“You didn't need Adrian to do that. You chose it yourself.”

A sound came from downstairs.

Glass breaking.

Lucian immediately moved between Eliza and the door.

Security voices erupted.

Then silence.

Lucian touched his earpiece.

No response.

The bedroom lights went out.

Eliza's laptop remained glowing.

A new file appeared on the screen.

Nobody had clicked it.

Its title contained only two words.

May you like

HELLO, LUCIAN.

Then footsteps started climbing the stairs.
