Chapter 9 - A Brother’s Dangerous Secret

Owen disappeared before police reached Bellamy’s.

His apartment was empty.

His phone had been abandoned.

Brett admitted Owen had worked directly for Patrick for nearly two years.

He had copied schedules.

Moved envelopes.

Photographed customers.

And watched Tessa.

But Owen was not the mastermind.

He was frightened labor.

Patrick had threatened his family.

Tessa wanted to hate him.

Reality refused to remain simple enough for hatred.

Meanwhile, Danny struggled with the truth about his father.

He avoided Salvatore.

Then, unexpectedly, Salvatore found him sitting outside the hospital where Marcus was recovering.

They spoke with their hands.

Tessa watched from a distance.

Danny finally asked:

Do you wish I wasn’t your brother?

Salvatore answered:

I spent thirty-three years wishing I had one.

Danny stared at him.

Then laughed through tears.

The relationship did not become easy.

But it began.

Tessa’s own relationship with Salvatore changed too.

They ate together after closing.

They signed across empty tables.

She learned he hated olives.

He learned she secretly loved terrible detective shows.

She discovered he had started losing his hearing gradually after the crash and became profoundly deaf months later.

He discovered she had once planned to attend nursing school but abandoned it when hospital debt and family responsibilities became too heavy.

Neither tried to rescue the other.

That mattered.

Then Owen contacted Tessa.

He wanted to meet alone.

Salvatore hated the idea.

Tessa went anyway—with security nearby.

Owen arrived trembling.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why me?”

“Because Patrick knew about your mother.”

“Why Table Seven?”

Owen swallowed.

“Because someone else ordered him to put the card there.”

Tessa froze.

“Who?”

Owen handed her a flash drive.

“Watch it somewhere safe.”

A vehicle approached.

Owen panicked.

He ran.

The vehicle followed.

Salvatore’s men intervened.

Owen escaped through an alley.

Tessa never saw where he went.

Back at Salvatore’s office, they opened the drive.

One video.

Security footage from Bellamy’s.

Timestamp: three weeks earlier.

Patrick sat at Table Seven.

Across from him was someone whose face remained outside the camera angle.

They spoke.

Patrick said, “The girl doesn’t know.”

The unseen person replied.

“She will.”

Tessa recognized the voice.

She had heard it all her life.

Her father.

Thomas Whitlock.

Tessa stopped breathing.

Danny stared at the screen.

“Our dad?”

The video continued.

Thomas leaned into frame.

Older.

Exhausted.

Alive and familiar.

Patrick slid him an envelope.

Thomas pushed it back.

Then said:

“If you touch either of my children, I’ll tell Salvatore what Rachel really did that night.”

The recording ended.

Tessa turned toward Rachel.

Her mother had gone white.

“What did you do?”

Rachel said nothing.

“Mom.”

Still nothing.

Salvatore stepped forward.

Rachel finally whispered.

“I saved his life.”

Tessa frowned.

“Whose?”

Rachel looked at Salvatore.

Then at Danny.

“Both of theirs.”

A knock came from the office door.

Everyone turned.

Thomas Whitlock’s voice came from the hallway.

“Rachel?”

Tessa stood.

May you like

Her father had arrived.

And he was holding a gun.
