Chapter 7 - The Waitress Who Was Never Supposed to Know

The wreck sat inside an abandoned repair shop outside Chicago.

Patrick had preserved it for eighteen years.

A trophy.

Or insurance.

Salvatore’s men entered first.

They found Danny alive in the back seat.

Tessa pulled him out and held him so tightly he protested.

She signed against his shoulder.

Never do that again.

Danny managed a weak smile.

Can’t promise.

Tessa smacked his arm.

Then hugged him again.

Patrick was gone.

But he had left something inside the wreck.

A photograph.

Rachel holding baby Danny.

Beside her stood Vittorio Marquetti.

On the back:

ASK RACHEL WHO DANNY’S FATHER IS.

Tessa stared.

Rachel went pale.

Danny saw it.

His expression changed.

“No,” Rachel whispered.

Tessa faced her.

“Tell us.”

Rachel sat down.

Twenty-two years earlier, before Danny was born, Tessa’s parents had briefly separated.

Rachel had worked closely with Vittorio while investigating missing company funds.

One drunken, frightened night became a mistake neither repeated.

Danny was Vittorio’s biological son.

Tessa felt sick.

Danny stared at Salvatore.

Half brothers.

Salvatore looked equally stunned.

Rachel cried.

“I wanted to tell you.”

Danny backed away.

Tessa went after him.

He signed angrily.

My whole life is somebody else’s lie.

Tessa had no answer.

Salvatore did.

He stepped forward.

Blood does not decide who your father was.

Danny looked at him.

Salvatore continued.

The man who raised you was your father.

Something in Danny’s face broke.

Tessa watched Salvatore.

A feared man comforting a brother he had discovered five minutes earlier.

The rumors about Salvatore suddenly seemed very small.

Patrick had wanted the revelation to divide them.

Instead, it gave Salvatore another reason to protect Danny.

Brett revealed the rest.

His father wanted the evidence because Vittorio’s estate contained a dormant trust.

If another biological Marquetti heir existed, ownership of several properties would be challenged.

Including Bellamy’s.

Including the storage company.

Including the building where Patrick had hidden millions.

This had never been only revenge.

It was money.

Brett agreed to testify.

But he wanted protection.

Salvatore gave it.

That night, Tessa sat beside Salvatore outside the repair shop.

For once, neither signed.

Their hands simply rested close together.

Then Salvatore moved his fingers.

Are you afraid of me?

Tessa considered it.

Sometimes.

He nodded.

Good answer.

She smiled.

“Are you afraid of me?”

He signed immediately.

Definitely.

She laughed.

He smiled.

This time fully.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

A live photograph appeared.

Elena was sitting in a chair.

Bound.

Patrick stood behind her.

The message underneath contained an address.

And one instruction.

BRING RACHEL.

Salvatore stood.

Another message arrived.

Tessa read it.

COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT OR YOUR MOTHER LEARNS WHAT SILENCE REALLY MEANS.

May you like

Then Rachel whispered from behind them.

“I know where he took her.”
