Chapter 8 - The Man Behind Bellamy’s

Patrick had taken Elena to the original Bellamy’s building.
The restaurant everyone knew was its second location.
The first had closed after a fire twenty years earlier.
Rachel insisted on going.
Salvatore objected.
Rachel refused.
Tessa understood where Salvatore’s stubbornness came from.
Police were contacted quietly.
Brett provided enough evidence to justify intervention.
But Patrick had watchers.
A visible police response could get Elena killed.
So Rachel entered first.
Tessa stayed in the surveillance van.
At least, that was the plan.
Then the camera feed died.
Salvatore moved immediately.
Tessa followed.
Inside, they found Rachel’s coat.
Blood on the floor.
Not much.
Enough.
They continued downstairs.
Patrick waited in the basement.
Elena sat tied to a chair.
Rachel stood beside her.
A gun pressed against Rachel’s ribs.
Patrick Callahan was older than Tessa expected.
Gray hair.
Soft face.
Ordinary.
That frightened her.
Monsters should not look like someone’s accountant.
Patrick smiled at Salvatore.
“You grew up.”
Salvatore watched his mouth.
Patrick exaggerated his words cruelly.
“CAN. YOU. HEAR. ME?”
Tessa’s anger flashed.
Salvatore remained calm.
He signed to Tessa.
Tell him I understand cowards perfectly.
She almost smiled.
Then translated.
Patrick’s smile disappeared.
He wanted the ledgers.
Salvatore had brought copies.
Patrick demanded originals.
Tessa noticed Rachel looking toward a rusted pipe.
Three taps.
Pause.
Two taps.
Danny had taught Tessa that childhood code.
RUN.
Tessa glanced toward Salvatore.
He had seen it.
Patrick stepped closer.
“Your father ruined everything.”
Salvatore signed.
No. You did.
Patrick raised the gun.
Lights went out.
Salvatore moved.
Tessa dropped.
A struggle erupted.
Police entered from the rear.
When emergency lights returned, Patrick was on the floor.
But he was laughing.
“You think this ends with me?”
Rachel stared.
Patrick smiled at her.
“You still haven’t told them who owns Bellamy’s.”
Tessa frowned.
Patrick looked directly at her.
“You do.”
Silence.
He explained.
Rachel had secretly purchased the original Bellamy’s property through a trust using recovered money.
When she disappeared, ownership transferred to Tessa on her twenty-seventh birthday.
Three weeks ago.
That was why Patrick had returned.
That was why Tessa had suddenly become a target.
Bellamy’s was not merely a restaurant.
Its property included underground vaults holding Patrick’s hidden financial records.
Patrick had been arrested.
Elena was safe.
For the first time, Tessa thought the nightmare might be ending.
Then Brett approached.
He looked shaken.
“My father wasn’t lying about one thing.”
“What?”
“There’s someone else.”
Tessa stared.
“Who?”
Brett handed her a security photograph from Bellamy’s.
It showed someone entering the restaurant every Thursday before Salvatore arrived.
Someone who had access to Table Seven.
Someone Tessa trusted.
She looked at the face.
May you like
Her stomach dropped.
It was Owen.
