Chapter 6 - What Happened the Night He Lost His Hearing

Salvatore stared at his mother’s name.
Marcus pressed his hand against his bleeding shoulder.
“It isn’t what you think.”
Salvatore’s hands moved sharply.
Then tell me.
Marcus told them.
Eighteen years earlier, Elena had discovered that her husband’s businesses were being used to move money for Patrick Callahan and several associates.
She ordered the operation stopped.
Patrick refused.
Rachel found the records.
The confrontation escalated.
But the crash had been ordered by someone else.
Salvatore’s father.
Vittorio Marquetti.
Not to kill Rachel.
To frighten her.
Patrick turned intimidation into attempted murder.
Salvatore happened to be in Rachel’s car.
The crash destroyed his hearing.
Vittorio spent the rest of his life covering up his responsibility.
“And Elena?” Tessa asked.
“She recorded his confession.”
Marcus pointed toward the cassette.
They found an old player in the warehouse office.
The tape crackled.
Vittorio’s voice emerged.
Salvatore could not hear it.
Tessa could.
So she signed every word to him.
Vittorio confessed to ordering Patrick to stop Rachel.
He insisted he never ordered murder.
Then Elena’s voice demanded that he admit Salvatore had been in Rachel’s car.
Vittorio broke down.
Tessa watched Salvatore while signing his dead father’s confession.
His face barely moved.
But tears filled his eyes.
He did not wipe them away.
When the tape ended, Tessa lowered her hands.
Salvatore stood motionless.
She touched his fingers.
Not pity.
Not comfort exactly.
Presence.
He closed his hand around hers.
Marcus looked away.
Then his phone rang.
Rachel.
Danny had disappeared.
They raced to the safe house.
Rachel stood outside.
“He left this.”
She handed Tessa a note.
Danny’s handwriting.
I know where Mom hid the rest.
I’m finishing this.
Tessa cursed under her breath.
Rachel explained.
Danny had discovered that his childhood hearing-aid case contained a microfilm strip.
It showed a storage number.
Bellamy’s old basement had no unit 117.
But Marquetti Storage did.
Salvatore owned the building now.
His father had owned it in 2008.
They drove there.
Unit 117 was unlocked.
Inside were boxes.
Financial ledgers.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Enough evidence to expose Patrick and everyone connected to him.
But Danny was not there.
On the floor lay his phone.
Tessa picked it up.
A video was open.
Danny had recorded himself entering the unit.
He found the boxes.
Then he turned.
Someone appeared behind him.
The recording ended.
Tessa replayed the final frame.
Salvatore enlarged it.
A hand was visible.
On one finger was a distinctive black-stone ring.
Rachel gasped.
“I know that ring.”
Tessa turned.
“Whose?”
Rachel looked at Salvatore.
“Patrick’s.”
A sound came from the back of the storage unit.
Three knocks.
Tessa moved toward a metal cabinet.
Salvatore stepped beside her.
Another knock.
Tessa opened it.
Brett Callahan fell forward.
His hands were tied.
His mouth was taped.
Tessa pulled the tape away.
“Where’s Danny?”
Brett gasped for air.
“My father took him.”
“Where?”
Brett looked terrified.
“Back to the place where all of this started.”
“Bellamy’s?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Salvatore.
“The car.”
Salvatore froze.
Brett swallowed.
“My father kept the wreck.”
May you like
Then he said something that made Rachel stumble backward.
“Danny is locked inside it.”
