Chapter 11 - The Betrayal at Table Seven

Carla was holding a key.
Not a weapon.
She locked the door because she was terrified someone had followed her.
“I was sixteen,” she said.
Her father had worked in Bellamy’s kitchen.
On the night of the crash, Carla had been waiting for him after closing.
She saw Patrick arguing with Rachel.
She saw Vittorio arrive.
She saw Salvatore follow.
Later she saw Patrick tampering with Rachel’s car.
Carla told police.
Then her father received a photograph of Carla walking home from school.
He withdrew the statement.
The family disappeared for years.
Carla returned to Chicago as an adult under her mother’s surname.
“Why work here?”
“To watch Patrick.”
“Why treat me like garbage?”
Carla cried.
“Because Patrick noticed anyone who got close to you.”
Tessa stared at her.
“So you protected me by hurting me?”
“No. I told myself that. Sometimes I was just cruel.”
The admission mattered.
Carla did not ask forgiveness.
She handed Tessa the key.
It opened a safe beneath Bellamy’s original wine cellar.
Inside, according to Carla, was the one thing Patrick had spent eighteen years seeking.
Rachel’s complete ledger.
Police accompanied them downstairs.
The safe was empty.
Except for a phone.
It rang.
Tessa answered.
Patrick’s voice.
He had escaped custody during a hospital transfer.
Someone had helped him.
“You keep opening doors you should leave closed,” he said.
“What do you want?”
“Nothing from you anymore.”
Tessa’s blood chilled.
“Then why call?”
“To say goodbye.”
The line disconnected.
Salvatore’s phone vibrated.
Security alert.
His home.
They opened the live feed.
Danny was there with Elena.
A figure moved behind them.
Patrick.
Salvatore ran.
Tessa followed.
By the time they reached the house, Elena was unconscious but alive.
Danny was gone.
Again.
On the wall Patrick had written an address.
Underneath:
ONE SON FOR ANOTHER.
Salvatore stared.
Tessa understood.
Patrick blamed Vittorio for everything.
Now he wanted Vittorio’s biological son.
Danny.
They reached the address near dawn.
An abandoned church.
Patrick stood near the altar.
Danny was tied to a chair.
Salvatore approached alone.
Patrick spoke slowly so he could read his lips.
“You were supposed to die in that car.”
Salvatore stopped.
Patrick smiled.
“And now your brother will finish what you started.”
Tessa moved through a side aisle.
Danny saw her.
He remained still.
Patrick raised his gun.
Salvatore did not flinch.
Then another voice echoed through the church.
“Patrick.”
Rachel emerged from the darkness.
Patrick turned.
Rachel held the original ledger.
“The thing you wanted for eighteen years.”
Patrick stared.
Rachel placed it on the altar.
“Let Danny go.”
Patrick smiled.
Then Tessa noticed something.
The ledger was too clean.
Too new.
A decoy.
Patrick stepped toward it.
Police lights suddenly flashed through the stained glass.
Patrick grabbed Danny.
Salvatore lunged.
The gun fired.
Tessa screamed.
Someone fell.
For one unbearable second, she could not see who.
Then Salvatore rose.
Danny was alive.
Patrick lay wounded.
Police rushed in.
It seemed finished.
Until Rachel opened the fake ledger.
Inside was a note.
She read it.
Her face changed.
Tessa took it from her.
Only six words were written.
THE REAL LEDGER IS WITH BRETT.

Everyone turned.
Brett Callahan was nowhere to be found.
