Chapter 12 - The Night Bellamy’s Went Dark

Brett had disappeared with the evidence.
Tessa refused to believe he had betrayed them.
Salvatore was less certain.
“He spent his whole life under Patrick.”
“He also saved Danny.”
People could do both good and terrible things.
Tessa had learned that repeatedly.
They returned to Bellamy’s.
At 11:47 p.m., every light went out.
Emergency power failed.
Someone had deliberately cut it.
Tessa stood inside the dining room.
Salvatore found her hand in the darkness.
She squeezed once.
I’m here.
A flashlight appeared.
Brett.
He looked exhausted.
“I have the ledger.”
Tessa almost collapsed with relief.
“Why did you run?”
“Because there’s one person Patrick never suspected.”
Brett opened the ledger.
Inside were decades of payments.
Names.
Dates.
Companies.
Judges.
Police officers.
Business owners.
But Brett pointed to one recurring payment.
V. MARQUETTI.
Salvatore stared.
His father.
Then Brett turned the page.
The payments continued after Vittorio died.
Someone had been using his identity.
The recipient account belonged to a shell corporation.
Rachel recognized it.
“It’s Elena’s.”
Salvatore went still.
“No,” Tessa whispered.
A voice came from the dark.
“Yes.”
Elena stepped into the emergency light.
She looked tired.
Not frightened.
Salvatore signed.
Why?
Elena answered with her hands.
Because after Vittorio died, I took control of the network he left behind.
Salvatore’s face hardened.
Elena explained.
She had not ordered murders.
She had used the accounts to pay informants, protect witnesses and track Patrick.
But doing so made her look guilty.
She had allowed Salvatore to believe she abandoned him because she feared Patrick would use him against her.
Salvatore stared at his mother.
You should have trusted me.
I know.
You left me alone.
I know.
No excuse.
Only truth.
Tessa watched them.
Elena stepped closer.
I chose keeping you alive over letting you love me.
Salvatore’s eyes filled.
And I was wrong to believe those were the only choices.
He did not forgive her immediately.
That would have been too easy.
But he did not walk away.
Then Brett turned another page.
“There’s something else.”
The ledger documented the ownership transfers.
Bellamy’s.
Storage facilities.
Several Marquetti properties.
Patrick had forged signatures for years.
Brett had enough evidence to dismantle the entire scheme.
But one signature was genuine.
Rachel’s.
Tessa stared.
“You transferred Bellamy’s to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted something clean to survive all this.”
Tessa laughed softly.
“Have you seen this restaurant?”
Rachel almost smiled.
Then glass shattered.
A bottle flew through the front window.
Flames exploded across the carpet.
“MOVE!”
Salvatore pulled Tessa back.
Sprinklers activated.
Smoke filled the room.
Someone outside was trying to destroy the ledger.
Brett grabbed it.
They ran toward the kitchen.
The rear exit was chained.
From outside.
Tessa looked toward Salvatore.
Smoke thickened.
Then someone began pounding on the front door.
Three hard blows.
A voice shouted Tessa’s name.
She recognized it.
May you like
Owen.
And he was screaming that Patrick had never acted alone.
