Chapter 7 - The Man Who Built Victor Moretti’s Empire

The image on the security monitor remained frozen.
Thomas Vale stood inside Victor’s private office.
The same office where Victor had spent decades making decisions that changed the city.
The same office where he had planned deals, negotiated with powerful people, and built the empire everyone feared.
Now the man who helped him create it was standing there like he owned it.
Holding Lily’s medical file.
Victor stared at the screen.
His face showed no emotion.
But Hannah noticed his hands.
They were shaking.
Only slightly.
But they were shaking.
“Who is he?” Hannah asked.
Victor didn’t answer.
Elena did.
“Thomas Vale.”
The name carried weight.
Not because Hannah knew him.
But because she saw the reaction it created.
Victor looked like he had just seen a ghost.
“He was your mentor,” Hannah whispered.
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“And now he’s here.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor’s eyes remained fixed on the monitor.
“Because he knows what’s inside the locket.”
A cold silence filled the room.
The security commander looked at Victor.
“Sir, should we move in?”
Victor raised his hand.
“No.”
Everyone looked surprised.
“No?”
Victor shook his head.
“Thomas wants us to see him.”
Elena nodded slowly.
“He always did that.”
Hannah looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Elena looked toward the monitor.
“Thomas never attacked directly.”
“He made people destroy themselves.”
“He manipulated.”
“He waited.”
“He made you believe you were in control until the moment you weren’t.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“That was his greatest talent.”
Hannah looked between them.
“So he’s been planning this for twenty-five years?”
Elena answered quietly:
“Yes.”
Victor finally walked toward the office entrance.
Hannah immediately stepped forward.
“You’re going alone?”
Victor looked at her.
“Yes.”
“No.”
The answer surprised him.
Hannah held Lily tighter.
“You said they want her.”
Victor nodded.
“Exactly.”
“Then I’m coming.”
Victor frowned.
“Hannah.”
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“My daughter is the reason all of this started.”
She looked at Elena.
“She spent twenty-five years protecting me.”
Then she looked at Victor.
“You spent twenty-five years carrying guilt.”
A pause.
“But I’m done being the person everyone protects while hiding the truth from me.”
Victor stared at her.
And for the first time…
He understood Elena’s daughter.
She wasn’t fragile.
She never had been.
Victor nodded.
“Stay behind me.”
Hannah almost smiled.
“That’s the closest thing to permission I’m going to get, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.”
The hallway leading to Victor’s office was dark.
The mansion had emergency lighting only.
Every step echoed.
Victor walked in front.
Hannah followed with Lily.
Elena walked beside them.
The strange thing was…
They looked like a family.
Not a normal family.
Not one built by years of happiness.
But one created by survival.
By secrets.
By loss.
When they reached the office door, Victor stopped.
The door was already open.
That alone was impossible.
Victor’s private office had three security locks.
Only two people had ever been able to enter freely.
Victor.
And Thomas.
Victor pushed the door open.
“Thomas.”
The old man looked up from behind the desk.
He smiled.
“Victor.”
The same calm smile.
The same confidence.
As if nothing had happened.
As if he hadn’t spent twenty-five years hiding.
As if he hadn’t sent armed men after a baby.
Victor stepped inside.
“You have ten seconds to explain why you’re here.”
Thomas laughed softly.
“Still dramatic.”
“You have five.”
Thomas looked toward Hannah.
Then Lily.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Interest.
“So this is Elena’s daughter.”
Hannah immediately felt uncomfortable.
The way he looked at Lily wasn’t like looking at a child.
It was like looking at an object.
A prize.
Victor noticed.
His expression turned dangerous.
“Don’t look at her like that.”
Thomas smiled.
“There he is.”
“What?”
“The old Victor.”
A pause.
“The man who still believes he can save everyone.”
Victor moved closer.
“You used me.”
Thomas leaned back.
“No.”
“I trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“And you betrayed me.”
Thomas sighed.
“Such a simple way to see the world.”
Hannah’s anger grew.
“You ruined people’s lives.”
Thomas looked at her.
“You don’t understand anything.”
“No.”
Hannah stepped forward.
“But I understand this.”
She looked at Lily.
“She’s a baby.”
Thomas stared at her.
“And she carries the key to everything.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“What key?”
Thomas smiled.
“The truth.”
Thomas reached into the drawer.
Victor immediately raised his weapon.
But Thomas slowly removed an old envelope.
Nothing else.
He placed it on the desk.
“Elena spent years hiding this.”
Elena looked at it.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Thomas smiled.
“You remember.”
Elena stepped forward.
“That was destroyed.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You thought it was destroyed.”
Victor looked between them.
“What is it?”
Elena didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“The original evidence.”
Hannah stared.
“Evidence of what?”
Thomas smiled.
“The reason Elena disappeared.”
Victor’s eyes hardened.
“Tell me.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.”
A pause.
“You think Elena was protecting herself.”
He looked at Hannah.
“She wasn’t.”
“She was protecting her daughter.”
Then he looked at Lily.
“And now the daughter is protecting the truth.”
Thomas opened the envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
Victor immediately recognized it.
His face changed.
Because the picture showed something impossible.
It showed Victor.
Standing beside Thomas.
And another man.
A man Victor thought was dead.
Hannah looked confused.
“Who is that?”
Victor whispered:
“Michael Rossi.”
Elena looked down.
“My father.”
Hannah looked at her.
“Your father?”
Elena nodded.
Victor stared at the photograph.
“This is impossible.”
Thomas smiled.
“No.”
“It’s the truth.”
He placed another document on the desk.
Victor picked it up.
His expression changed with every line.
Hannah watched.
“What does it say?”
Victor didn’t answer.
Elena took the paper.
And then she froze.
“What?”
Hannah stepped closer.
Elena whispered:
“This…”
Her hands trembled.
“This proves Victor was never responsible for what happened to my father.”
Victor looked at Thomas.
“You framed me.”
Thomas smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Thomas stood slowly.
“Because you were becoming too powerful.”
A pause.
“And because Elena chose you over me.”
The room became silent.
Hannah understood.
This was not just about money.
Or power.
It was personal.
Thomas had destroyed two lives because of obsession.
Suddenly, a sound came from outside.
A scream.
Then gunfire.
Everyone turned.
The security alarms erupted.
Thomas smiled.
Victor looked at him.
“What did you do?”
Thomas calmly adjusted his coat.
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Then who?”
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Your people.”
Victor froze.
“What?”
Thomas smiled.
“You spent so much time looking outside for enemies.”
A pause.
“You forgot to look at who was standing beside you.”
Victor immediately understood.
The traitor.
Inside the mansion.
The lights suddenly switched off.
Emergency systems failed.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
A voice everyone recognized.
The head of security.
“Victor.”
The mansion became silent.
The commander looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.”
The voice continued:
“You should have listened when I warned you.”
Victor stared at the speaker.
“Who are you working for?”
A pause.
Then the answer came.
“Not who.”
“Something.”
The voice became colder.
“Someone who has been waiting twenty-five years.”
Thomas smiled.
Because he knew.
Victor didn’t.
“What does that mean?” Hannah whispered.
Elena’s face turned pale.
Because she understood.
“Thomas wasn’t the final enemy.”
Victor looked at her.
“What?”
Elena stared at the darkness outside.
“The person behind him…”
She swallowed.
“Is the one who ordered my death.”
A shadow moved outside the office window.
Then the glass cracked.
A small device fell onto the floor.
A recording began playing.
A familiar voice filled the room.
A voice from the past.
A voice Hannah had never heard.
But Elena recognized instantly.
“Hello, Elena.”
Her face turned white.
Because the voice said:
“You really thought you could hide my granddaughter forever?”
Hannah looked at Lily.
Victor looked at Elena.
And everyone realized the truth.
The danger had never been about the locket.
It had never been about the evidence.
It was about blood.
May you like
And the person coming for Lily…
Was family.
