Chapter 12 - The Last Rossi Secret

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But for Hannah, it felt much longer.

The old house was completely silent.

No wind.

No footsteps.

No voices.

Only the sound of Lily’s quiet breathing.

Hannah held her daughter close, her heart racing.

She didn’t know who this woman was.

She didn’t know what else her mother had hidden.

But she knew one thing.

Every secret connected to her family had brought danger.

And every person who carried those secrets had been forced to suffer.

The lights finally returned.

Slowly.

The woman in the doorway remained standing there.

Calm.

Almost sad.

Elena stared at her like she was seeing a ghost.

“You…”

Her voice trembled.

“You’re alive.”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Hannah looked between them.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at her.

“My name is Sofia Rossi.”

A pause.

“I am your aunt.”

Nobody spoke.

The word felt impossible.

Aunt.

Another piece of a family Hannah never knew existed.

Another person who had disappeared.

Another person who had allowed her to grow up without answers.

Hannah’s expression hardened.

“Why is everyone in my family always alive when it’s convenient?”

The words hurt.

Sofia looked down.

She didn’t defend herself.

Because she understood.

“You have every right to hate us.”

Hannah looked surprised.

At least this woman admitted it.

Sofia stepped into the room.

“But hatred won’t keep Lily safe.”

Victor raised his weapon slightly.

“Before anything else…”

Everyone looked at him.

“I want answers.”

Sofia nodded.

“You deserve them.”

Victor lowered the weapon.

Slightly.

Not completely.

“What does the locket open?”

Sofia looked at Lily.

“The reason everyone has been searching for her.”

Sofia walked toward the desk.

She placed an old folder beside the metal box.

“I spent twenty-five years protecting this.”

Victor frowned.

“Why didn’t you come forward?”

Sofia looked at Elena.

“Because Isabella was watching.”

Elena’s face changed.

“She knew about you?”

Sofia nodded.

“She knew everything.”

Hannah looked confused.

“Then why didn’t she kill you?”

Sofia smiled sadly.

“She tried.”

A pause.

“She failed.”

Sofia explained the truth.

After Elena discovered Isabella’s involvement, she tried to escape with Hannah.

But Isabella was not acting alone.

She had connections everywhere.

People who could erase records.

Change identities.

Make someone disappear.

Elena knew she couldn’t protect Hannah by staying close.

So she made the hardest choice of her life.

She disappeared.

But before she did, she contacted Sofia.

Her younger sister.

The only person she trusted.

Sofia took the remaining evidence.

She hid.

She waited.

And she watched from a distance.

Every year.

Every birthday.

Every important moment.

She saw Hannah grow up.

But she never approached.

Because approaching Hannah meant exposing her.

And exposure meant death.

Hannah listened silently.

The anger was still there.

But something else appeared.

Understanding.

A painful understanding.

“So everyone was protecting me.”

Sofia nodded.

“Yes.”

Hannah looked at Lily.

“But nobody asked if I wanted to know the truth.”

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Victor looked away.

Elena lowered her eyes.

Marco said nothing.

They had all protected her.

But they had also taken her choice away.

Sofia opened the old folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Names.

Evidence.

“The locket is not valuable because of what is inside.”

She looked at Victor.

“It is valuable because of what it unlocks.”

Victor frowned.

“What?”

“A hidden archive.”

Marco stepped closer.

“Where?”

Sofia looked at him.

“Under the city.”

Everyone froze.

Victor understood immediately.

“The old Moretti vault.”

Sofia nodded.

The underground facility created by their fathers decades ago.

A place nobody knew existed.

A place designed for one purpose.

To store information powerful enough to destroy anyone.

Hannah looked confused.

“Why would my mother hide something there?”

Sofia answered:

“Because she knew one day the truth would need to survive.”

Victor looked at the documents.

“What kind of truth?”

Sofia hesitated.

Then she answered.

“The truth about the people who controlled New York.”

The room became quiet.

Not criminals.

Not gangs.

Something bigger.

People with influence.

Power.

Respectable faces.

People who could destroy anyone without ever touching a weapon.

Sofia continued:

“Thomas Vale was only a messenger.”

Everyone looked shocked.

“Then who was he working for?”

Sofia looked at Elena.

Then Victor.

“The Council.”

A cold silence followed.

Hannah frowned.

“The Council?”

Sofia nodded.

“A group of powerful people who have controlled businesses, politics, and organized crime for decades.”

Victor’s expression changed.

Because he had heard whispers.

Rumors.

Stories.

But he had never believed they were real.

“They exist?”

Sofia nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Isabella?”

“Was one of them.”

Suddenly, every phone in the room vibrated.

Everyone looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

YOU FOUND THE HOUSE. NOW FIND THE VAULT.

Victor’s expression darkened.

“They know we’re here.”

Marco looked around.

“How?”

Sofia answered quietly:

“Because someone followed us.”

Everyone turned.

The room became tense.

Victor looked at the people around him.

Hannah.

Elena.

Marco.

Sofia.

Then the old house.

Someone had been watching.

Again.

A noise came from outside.

Snow crunching.

Multiple footsteps.

Victor moved toward the window.

Cars.

Black vehicles.

Surrounding the property.

Hannah’s heart sank.

“Isabella?”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“Then who?”

Sofia’s face became serious.

“The Council.”

The name carried more fear than Isabella.

Because Isabella wanted control.

The Council wanted silence.

Victor looked at everyone.

“We need to leave.”

Marco nodded.

“But the vault.”

Victor looked at Lily.

The baby wearing the silver locket.

The key everyone wanted.

“We go there first.”

They moved quickly.

But before leaving, Hannah stopped.

She looked at Elena.

Her mother.

The woman she had lost.

The woman she had just found.

“I have one question.”

Elena nodded.

“Ask.”

“Did you ever stop loving me?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Never.”

“Not once?”

“Not for a second.”

Hannah looked away.

Because a part of her wanted to believe it.

And a part of her was still hurt.

“I don’t know if I can forgive everything.”

Elena nodded.

“I know.”

“But…”

Hannah looked at Lily.

“I don’t want my daughter to grow up surrounded by secrets.”

Elena stepped closer.

“I promise she won’t.”

Hannah looked at her.

“Why should I believe you?”

Elena smiled sadly.

“Because this time…”

She touched Lily’s hand.

“I won’t disappear.”

They left the old house through a hidden underground passage.

A tunnel built decades ago.

A tunnel only the Rossi and Moretti families knew about.

As they walked deeper beneath the earth, Victor and Marco moved together.

Like brothers again.

Like they had never been separated.

Almost.

Finally, Marco spoke.

“You know…”

Victor looked at him.

“What?”

“I thought you would hate me.”

Victor was quiet.

Then answered:

“I did.”

Marco nodded.

“I deserved that.”

A pause.

“But I was wrong.”

Marco looked surprised.

Victor continued:

“I spent twenty-five years blaming myself.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I failed everyone.”

He looked ahead.

“But maybe we were both victims.”

Marco smiled faintly.

“Look at you.”

“What?”

“You’re finally admitting you’re human.”

Victor almost laughed.

Almost.

After an hour underground, they reached a massive steel door.

Covered in old symbols.

Rossi.

Moretti.

The same symbol carved into Lily’s locket.

Sofia stepped forward.

“This is it.”

Victor looked at the door.

“How do we open it?”

Sofia looked at Lily.

Hannah stepped closer.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“She’s a baby.”

Sofia nodded.

“The locket opens the door.”

Hannah hesitated.

Then slowly removed the silver necklace.

She held it carefully.

The only thing her mother had left her.

The only thing that connected generations of secrets.

She placed it into the lock.

For a moment…

Nothing happened.

Then—

A deep mechanical sound echoed underground.

The door began opening.

Cold air escaped from inside.

The vault was finally revealed.

Everyone stared.

Because inside was not money.

Not weapons.

Not gold.

Only thousands of files.

And one large screen.

The screen suddenly turned on.

A video began playing.

A man appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Victor froze.

Because he recognized him.

Their father.

The man who had written the letter.

The man who had started everything.

The recording began:

“If you are watching this…”

A pause.

“Then the Council has found my family.”

The video continued.

“And there is one thing you must know.”

Everyone leaned closer.

The old man looked directly into the camera.

“Lily Rossi-Moretti is not the last survivor.”

A pause.

“She is not the key.”

Victor frowned.

“Then what is she?”

The recording answered:

“She is the guardian.”

The screen changed.

A final image appeared.

A name.

A name that made everyone freeze.

Because it was someone they thought was long gone.

THE HEIR OF THE COUNCIL.

And beneath the name…

Was a photograph.

Of someone standing outside the vault.

May you like

Watching them.

Alive.
