Chapter 9 - The Truth My Father Died To Protect

For most of my life, I believed my father’s greatest mistake was leaving me.

I spent years creating a version of him in my mind.

A man who chose to walk away.

A man who decided his life was more important than his family.

A man who left my mother to raise me alone.

But now I stood in an abandoned building with my husband beside me, listening to people reveal pieces of a story I was never supposed to know.

And I realized something that hurt more than anger.

I had been wrong.

My father wasn’t a man who abandoned me.

He was a man who disappeared to protect me.

The difference between those two things was an entire lifetime of pain.

Victoria stood in front of us, holding the small recording device.

The voice of Grant’s mother still echoed in my mind.

Once the child is born, the legacy will belong to us.

Those words made me feel sick.

Not because I understood them.

Because I didn’t.

And somehow, everyone around me knew more about my own life than I did.

Again.

I looked at Grant.

His expression was impossible to read.

For years, he had built walls around himself.

But now those walls were collapsing.

His own family had betrayed him.

His enemies knew about our child.

And the woman who raised him was connected to the people hunting us.

“Explain.”

Grant’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

Victoria looked at him.

“Your mother knew about Elena’s father.”

Grant’s eyes narrowed.

“How?”

“Because she was involved before you ever met Elena.”

The room became silent.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Before we met?”

Victoria nodded.

“She knew your father’s research had disappeared.”

She looked at me.

“And she knew Elena was the last person connected to it.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The word came out automatically.

Because I didn’t want to believe it.

My entire life was changing too quickly.

My father was alive.

My husband’s family had secrets.

My pregnancy had become the center of a war.

It was too much.

“Why would my father hide something from me?”

Victoria’s expression softened.

“Because you were a child.”

“That doesn’t explain everything.”

“No.”

She paused.

“But this does.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out an old envelope.

A simple brown envelope.

Worn.

Aged.

My heart stopped before she even handed it to me.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

I had seen it only a few times in my life.

On birthday cards.

On old photographs.

On the few memories my mother kept hidden.

My father’s handwriting.

I took the envelope with shaking hands.

“Where did you get this?”

“Your father gave it to someone he trusted before he disappeared.”

My fingers trembled.

“He knew he might not come back.”

Those words hurt.

Because some part of me had spent years believing he never thought about me.

But this proved the opposite.

He thought about me so much that he prepared for a future without him.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s words.

To Elena.

My daughter.

I had to stop reading for a moment.

Just seeing my name written by him felt impossible.

Then I continued.

If you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you away from this world.

My breathing stopped.

But I need you to know one thing.

I never left you.

I was trying to make sure you had a life where you never had to know my enemies.

I looked away.

The tears came before I could stop them.

I continued reading.

The people searching for what I discovered will not stop.

They believe power is inherited.

They believe blood gives them ownership.

But they are wrong.

The only thing that matters is the choice you make.

Not the family you come from.

Not the name you carry.

The person you become.

My hand covered my mouth.

Because those words sounded exactly like something I needed to hear.

My entire life, I had been afraid of becoming part of Grant’s world.

But maybe the truth was that my father had spent his life trying to keep me away from the same darkness.

The letter continued.

Grant Mercer is not like the people you fear.

I looked up.

Grant was watching me.

My father knew him?

Before me?

I kept reading.

He carries a dangerous name, but I believe his heart is different.

If you ever find yourself beside him, do not judge him by the world he was born into.

Judge him by the choices he makes when he has everything to lose.

A tear fell onto the paper.

Because my father had trusted Grant before I ever did.

The final sentence was the one that broke me.

Protect each other.

Because love is the one thing powerful people can never control.

I lowered the letter.

Nobody spoke.

Even Grant looked affected.

“My father knew you.”

Grant nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

My voice shook.

“Tell me everything.”

Grant looked at the ground.

“I met your father once.”

“When?”

“Before I met you.”

I stared.

“Where?”

“In a hospital.”

The answer surprised me.

“He was injured. He knew he was being followed.”

Grant took a breath.

“He gave me information because he believed I was the only person powerful enough to keep it away from the people hunting him.”

I swallowed.

“And then?”

“He disappeared.”

“Did you know he was alive?”

Grant hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Grant.”

“No.”

His voice became quiet.

“I thought he was dead.”

I believed him.

Because for once, I could see the truth in his face.

He wasn’t hiding.

He was remembering.

“I wanted to tell you about him.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

His eyes met mine.

“Because every time I tried, I saw how happy you were.”

A sad smile appeared.

“You finally had peace.”

I looked away.

“I had questions.”

“I know.”

“And you decided I was better without answers.”

He nodded.

“I was wrong.”

That was the first time Grant Mercer said those words.

Not I was protecting you.

Not I had reasons.

Just:

I was wrong.

And somehow, that meant more than every promise he had ever made.

Suddenly, Daniel rushed into the room.

“We have a problem.”

Grant immediately changed.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked serious.

“Marcus found the location.”

Victoria’s face went pale.

“How?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because someone told him.”

Everyone became silent.

Grant’s eyes moved around the room.

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Your mother.”

The betrayal still felt impossible.

But this time, something was different.

Grant didn’t look surprised.

He looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Because no matter what happened, she was still his mother.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who had betrayed him.

“We need to leave,” Daniel said.

Grant nodded.

Then he looked at me.

“Elena.”

I knew what he was going to say.

Stay here.

Let me handle it.

Be safe.

But before he could speak, I interrupted.

“No.”

He stopped.

I stepped closer.

“I’m not leaving.”

“Elena.”

“I spent my whole life being protected from the truth.”

I held up my father’s letter.

“I’m done running.”

Grant looked at me.

And something changed.

He wasn’t looking at me like someone fragile anymore.

He was looking at me like his equal.

“Okay.”

One word.

But it meant everything.

We prepared to leave.

But before we reached the door, my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a familiar voice.

My father.

“Elena.”

I closed my eyes.

“Dad?”

His voice was weak.

Tired.

But alive.

“I don’t have much time.”

My heart raced.

“Where are you?”

“Listen carefully.”

I held my breath.

“The person who started all of this…”

A pause.

“The person who ordered the attack on our family…”

The world became still.

“Is someone you trust.”

I looked at Grant.

Then at Victoria.

Then at Daniel.

Everyone looked back at me.

My father continued.

“And Elena…”

His voice broke.

“The person closest to you is the reason your baby is in danger.”

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Because after everything we had discovered…

After every betrayal…

After every secret…

There was still one more truth waiting.

And this time…

May you like

The enemy wasn’t outside.

It was already standing beside us.
