Chapter 7 - The Last Betrayal

The first thing I learned after discovering the truth was that secrets never disappear.

They wait.

They hide.

They grow.

And eventually, they come back stronger than before.

For years, I believed my biggest problem was that Grant Mercer was dangerous.

I thought his enemies were the reason I was afraid.

I thought his world was the thing threatening my future.

But I was wrong.

The most dangerous thing about Grant was not his power.

It was that he loved me enough to believe he had the right to decide what I could handle.

He thought hiding the truth was protection.

He thought carrying every burden alone made him a better husband.

But he never understood one thing.

A person cannot build a life with someone while keeping half of themselves locked away.

And now, standing in the middle of that quiet street, surrounded by enemies and secrets, I finally understood why I had run.

I wasn’t running because I stopped loving Grant.

I was running because I loved him and didn’t know if I could trust him anymore.

Victoria’s words remained in my mind.

Your baby is the last connection to your father’s hidden legacy.

I looked at my husband.

At the man who had changed my entire life.

The man who had given me the happiest years of my life.

The man who had also hidden the biggest truth I had ever discovered.

“Tell me everything.”

My voice was quiet.

But this time, I wasn’t asking.

I was demanding.

Grant looked at me.

For once, he didn’t try to avoid my eyes.

“You deserve that.”

I almost laughed.

Because those words should have been said five years ago.

Not after I ran.

Not after someone threatened our child.

Not after strangers revealed pieces of my own life that my husband had kept hidden.

Grant took a slow breath.

“Your father was involved with people connected to my organization.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“My father?”

He nodded.

“But not the way you think.”

I crossed my arms.

“Then explain.”

Grant looked at Victoria.

She gave a small nod.

“He deserves to tell you.”

Grant continued.

“Your father wasn’t a criminal.”

The words shocked me.

Because everyone had always made him sound like one.

Growing up, I heard the same story.

My father disappeared.

He left.

He abandoned us.

My mother spent years refusing to talk about him.

I thought it was because she hated him.

But maybe it was because she was afraid.

“He discovered something,” Grant said.

“Something powerful people wanted to keep hidden.”

“What?”

“A financial network.”

He paused.

“A system that allowed powerful people to control businesses, politicians, and organizations without anyone knowing.”

I stared at him.

“And my father found this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Grant looked away.

“Because he wanted to destroy it.”

That sounded impossible.

Not because I doubted my father.

Because I realized how big this was.

How far beyond us this had become.

“So where does my child fit into this?”

Grant’s expression changed.

Pain.

Fear.

“The information your father left behind was protected by something only his family could access.”

My hand moved instinctively toward my stomach.

“No.”

Grant nodded.

“Your bloodline.”

The world felt strangely quiet.

My child.

My unborn baby.

A person who had not even entered the world yet.

Already being hunted because of something that happened decades ago.

I felt sick.

“I should have told you.”

Grant’s voice broke.

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He accepted the answer.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just guilt.

“I found out about your father before we met.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that someone else knew before me.

“I thought if I kept you close, I could protect you.”

“You married me because you were investigating me.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“I stayed because I loved you.”

I looked at him.

“And when did it change?”

Grant didn’t hesitate.

“The first day.”

I frowned.

“The first day?”

He nodded.

“The first day I met you.”

His voice became softer.

“I went to that coffee shop believing I was meeting someone connected to my enemies.”

“And then?”

“I saw you.”

A painful smile appeared.

“You spilled coffee on me and apologized like you had committed a crime.”

Despite everything, a tiny emotion moved through me.

Because I remembered.

I remembered that day.

“I thought you were just a normal man.”

Grant looked at me.

“You were the first person in years who treated me like one.”

The silence between us became heavier.

Because that was the hardest part.

I believed him.

That was what made everything worse.

I believed every word.

But belief was not the same as forgiveness.

Before I could answer, Daniel suddenly moved.

“Grant.”

His hand touched his earpiece.

Everyone became alert.

“What is it?” Grant asked.

Daniel’s face changed.

“We have a problem.”

“What kind?”

Daniel looked toward the road.

“The mansion.”

Grant froze.

“What about it?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Someone broke in.”

My heart sank.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at me.

“We don’t know.”

Then his eyes moved toward Grant.

“But they weren’t looking for you.”

A terrible silence followed.

Grant already knew.

“They were looking for something.”

Daniel nodded.

“The files.”

Everything connected.

Victor.

Marcus.

The threats.

The baby.

Someone was not trying to destroy Grant.

They were searching for what he had hidden.

The truth.

Grant immediately grabbed his phone.

“Lock down the mansion.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Grant…”

“What?”

“There’s something else.”

Grant stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We found out how they got inside.”

A pause.

“Someone gave them access.”

My blood turned cold.

Another betrayal.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

Grant’s face became unreadable.

“Who?”

Daniel looked down.

“We’re confirming.”

“Tell me.”

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“It was someone with access to your private office.”

Grant’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

Because I knew him.

“Who?” he repeated.

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at Grant.

“Your mother.”

Everything stopped.

My eyes widened.

Grant’s mother?

The same woman I had met only twice?

The elegant woman who always seemed distant?

The woman who had never approved of our marriage?

Grant looked like he had been hit.

“No.”

Daniel didn’t look away.

“The evidence points to her.”

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“That’s impossible.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria’s face was pale.

“She would never.”

Grant looked at her.

“You know her?”

Victoria became quiet.

Too quiet.

I noticed.

Grant noticed.

“Victoria.”

She looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

Everyone around Grant had secrets.

Everyone.

“What aren’t you telling us?”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Then she said:

“Your mother wasn’t the only person protecting the legacy.”

Grant stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone has been trying to control this family for years.”

She looked at me.

“And they waited until Elena was pregnant because they knew that was when Grant would finally be vulnerable.”

My heart tightened.

Grant stepped closer to me.

“No one is touching her.”

Victoria looked at him sadly.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“The person behind this doesn’t want Elena dead.”

The words were worse.

“Then what do they want?”

Victoria looked at my stomach.

“They want the child.”

The air disappeared from my lungs.

Grant immediately moved closer.

His hand found mine.

This time, I didn’t pull away.

Because despite all the pain between us...

Despite every secret...

One thing was clear.

We were facing something bigger than our marriage.

Bigger than our past.

Bigger than his empire.

A child who had not even been born had become the center of a war.

And somewhere out there was someone who believed they had the right to take my baby away from me.

Grant looked at me.

“I promise you.”

His voice was steady.

“I will fix this.”

I stared at him.

“You already promised that before.”

The words hurt him.

But he nodded.

Because he deserved them.

“I know.”

A pause.

“This time, I won’t protect you by hiding the truth.”

He squeezed my hand.

“This time, I’ll fight beside you.”

For the first time since I discovered his secrets...

I wanted to believe him.

But before I could answer, Grant’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Because only one person had that number.

A person who should have been impossible to reach.

Grant answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then his face changed.

The color disappeared.

“Who is it?”

He slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes met mine.

And the fear in them told me everything.

“It’s your father.”

My heart stopped.

Because my father had been missing for twenty years.

May you like

And according to Grant...

He was supposed to be dead.
