Chapter 3 - The Secret Files Grant Kept From Me

I always thought the most painful thing a person could lose was love.

I was wrong.

The most painful thing was discovering that the person you loved had been carrying a truth that could have changed everything.

When I left New York, I believed I was escaping Grant Mercer’s world.

I believed I was protecting my child from the danger surrounding him.

But I never imagined that Grant had been protecting something too.

Something he had hidden from me.

Something buried so deeply that even after five years of marriage, I had never known it existed.

The first morning after I disappeared, I woke up in a cheap motel room with the sound of rain hitting the window.

For a few seconds, I forgot where I was.

My eyes opened slowly.

The unfamiliar ceiling.

The old curtains.

The small table beside the bed.

Then reality returned.

I was alone.

I had left my husband.

I had left my home.

I had left everything familiar behind.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

A small wave of fear moved through me.

Not because I regretted leaving.

Because I knew what would happen when Grant found out.

And he would find out.

Men like Grant Mercer always found what they were looking for.

I packed my bag quietly.

I had already decided my next move.

A small town several hours away.

A new apartment.

A new name.

A new life.

A life where nobody knew who I was.

Nobody knew I was Elena Mercer.

Nobody knew I had once been married to the most powerful man in New York.

Nobody knew I was carrying his child.

That was the plan.

Simple.

Clean.

Safe.

But plans were always easier before emotions became involved.

And my emotions were everywhere.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Grant.

Not the man on television.

Not the man people feared.

The man who cooked breakfast for me when I was sick.

The man who held my hand during my mother’s funeral.

The man who whispered that he would love me even if the whole world turned against us.

That man was real.

And that was the problem.

Because I wasn't running from a stranger.

I was running from the man who still felt like home.

Meanwhile, across the state, Grant Mercer had not slept.

Not for one minute.

The mansion that once felt powerful now felt empty.

Every room reminded him of Elena.

The kitchen where she danced while making dinner.

The library where she fell asleep reading.

The balcony where she once told him she wanted a simple life.

A simple life.

Those words stayed in his mind.

Because Grant knew he had failed to give her that.

He had given her everything money could buy.

A mansion.

Luxury.

Security.

Protection.

But he had never given her the one thing she wanted most.

Peace.

Daniel entered Grant’s office carrying a file.

“We found the car.”

Grant immediately looked up.

“Where?”

“Pennsylvania.”

For a moment, relief crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

“Is she safe?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Grant stood.

“What happened?”

“We lost the vehicle after it stopped near a motel. The driver disappeared before we arrived.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“Disappeared?”

“Yes.”

Grant walked toward the window.

Something felt wrong.

Elena leaving him was painful.

But something else bothered him.

The timing.

The way she disappeared.

The way she had prepared everything.

Someone had helped her.

The question was who.

“Find the driver.”

Daniel nodded.

Then he stopped.

“Grant.”

“What?”

“There is something else.”

Grant turned.

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

“We checked the mansion security records.”

Grant looked at him.

“And?”

“Someone accessed your private office three weeks ago.”

The room became silent.

Grant slowly walked back to the desk.

“My office?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Daniel’s expression was serious.

“We’re still investigating.”

Grant opened the folder.

Inside were security images.

A person entering his office late at night.

The face was hidden.

But the timing was clear.

Three weeks ago.

The same week Elena discovered she was pregnant.

Grant felt something cold move through him.

Because he remembered.

Three weeks ago, Elena had started acting differently.

Quiet.

Careful.

She had asked strange questions.

Questions he thought were harmless.

“Grant, if something happened to you, would your enemies come after your family?”

He had laughed.

Told her not to worry.

Told her he would always protect her.

Now those words felt meaningless.

Because maybe she wasn't worried about losing him.

Maybe she was worried about what would happen if he wasn't there.

Grant opened the locked drawer in his desk.

Inside was another folder.

One he had never allowed anyone to see.

Not Daniel.

Not his closest associates.

Not even Elena.

The folder contained documents he had spent almost a year preparing.

Documents that were supposed to change their lives.

Documents that explained everything.

Grant stared at them.

Then he whispered:

“She was supposed to know tonight.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Know what?”

Grant opened the folder.

Inside were property records.

Bank accounts.

Legal documents.

And one final page.

A resignation letter.

Daniel looked shocked.

“You were leaving?”

Grant nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

The most powerful man in New York had been preparing to walk away from everything.

The empire.

The business.

The world that had made him feared.

All for Elena.

For their future child.

“For months, I’ve been transferring control,” Grant said quietly.

Daniel stared at him.

“You were going to give it all up?”

Grant looked at the photograph on his desk.

A picture of him and Elena.

A picture from their first anniversary.

“She told me once that she hated waking up not knowing if I would come home.”

His voice became softer.

“I promised her I would fix it.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“But you never told her.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Grant looked away.

Because the answer hurt.

“Because I wanted it to be perfect.”

He had planned everything.

The anniversary party.

The announcement.

The moment he would finally tell Elena that the dangerous world she feared would no longer control their lives.

He had planned to hand over his empire.

He had planned to take her somewhere far away.

A place where nobody knew his name.

A place where he could simply be her husband.

Not Grant Mercer.

Not the man everyone feared.

Just Grant.

But he had waited too long.

And while he prepared to give her freedom, she believed she had to run to find it herself.

The irony almost destroyed him.

Back in Pennsylvania, I sat inside a small diner watching strangers live normal lives.

A mother feeding her child.

A couple laughing over coffee.

A man reading a newspaper.

Normal.

That was what I wanted.

A normal life.

I touched my stomach.

“I’m going to give you this,” I whispered.

“A normal life.”

But even as I said the words, I knew I was lying.

Because my child was not ordinary.

And neither was the father.

My phone, the one I promised myself I would never turn on, was sitting inside my bag.

I stared at it for almost ten minutes.

Then I made a mistake.

I turned it on.

Immediately, dozens of notifications appeared.

Missed calls.

Messages.

Unknown numbers.

But one message stopped me.

It was from Grant.

Only three words.

Please come home.

My heart broke instantly.

Because anger would have been easier.

If he had threatened me.

If he had demanded I return.

If he had acted like the man everyone believed he was.

But he didn't.

He begged.

And that scared me more.

I deleted the message.

Then another appeared.

This time from an unknown number.

A number I didn't recognize.

The message was short.

But it made my blood run cold.

You think you escaped him.

You didn't.

You escaped first.

I stared at the screen.

My hands became cold.

A second message arrived.

The baby belongs to this world whether you like it or not.

I immediately stood.

My heart racing.

Someone knew.

Someone knew about the baby.

Someone knew I had left.

Someone other than Grant.

I looked around the diner.

Every person suddenly felt like a threat.

Every stranger felt like someone watching me.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But something inside me made me answer.

“Hello?”

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

“Elena.”

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not because I loved it.

Not because I missed it.

Because I remembered hearing it once before.

The night Grant came home with blood on his shirt.

The night everything changed.

“You don’t know me,” the voice continued.

“But I know you.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What do you want?”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“I want what Grant Mercer has been hiding.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

The voice became colder.

“The files.”

My heart stopped.

“What files?”

The man paused.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“The files your husband planned to show you on your anniversary.”

The diner suddenly felt silent.

Everyone around me disappeared.

Because I realized something terrifying.

Grant wasn’t the only person keeping secrets.

And whoever had been watching us knew exactly what was inside that folder.

“The truth about your husband,” the man whispered.

“And the reason your baby is already in danger.”

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

For the first time since leaving New York, I wondered if I had made the biggest mistake of my life.

May you like

Because maybe I wasn’t running away from Grant Mercer’s world.

Maybe I had just stepped directly into it.
