Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Hidden In Plain Sight

For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.

The room was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

The kind of silence that came right before everything collapsed.

My father’s words repeated in my mind.

The person closest to you is the reason your baby is in danger.

I looked at the people standing around me.

Grant.

Victoria.

Daniel.

Three people who had protected me.

Three people who had hidden things from me.

Three people who could possibly be the reason my child was being hunted.

My hand moved instinctively toward my stomach.

The fear I felt was different now.

Before, I had been afraid of enemies outside.

People like Victor.

People who wanted power.

People who wanted control.

But now?

Now I understood the most dangerous person was someone who already knew my name.

Someone who knew my habits.

Someone who knew where I slept.

Someone who knew exactly how to hurt me.

Grant noticed my expression.

“Elena.”

I looked at him.

For the first time since we met, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.

Not because he didn’t know what to do.

Because he was afraid I would no longer trust him.

“Tell me you believe me.”

His voice was quiet.

I swallowed.

“I want to.”

The honesty hurt him.

Because it wasn’t yes.

Not completely.

Grant nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“We need to leave now.”

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew the truth.

If someone inside this room was the traitor, staying together was dangerous.

But separating was worse.

We moved quickly.

The safe house was no longer safe.

Every exit was checked.

Every vehicle was searched.

Every person was questioned.

For the first time, I saw Grant’s world exactly as it was.

A world where trust was a luxury.

A world where every person had a second intention.

A world where love could become a weakness.

And yet, somehow, Grant had chosen to build a life with me inside it.

That was the part I still couldn’t understand.

A man like Grant Mercer should have chosen someone who understood his world.

Someone who knew how to survive it.

Instead, he chose me.

Someone who wanted quiet mornings.

Someone who wanted a normal family.

Someone who hated the idea of carrying a weapon.

Maybe that was why everyone wanted to use me against him.

Because I was the one thing he could not lose.

We arrived at a temporary location outside the city.

An old property Grant owned but rarely used.

It was isolated.

Hidden.

Perfect for disappearing.

Grant stood by the window while Daniel checked security.

I watched him quietly.

The man I married.

The man I ran from.

The man I was slowly learning all over again.

“You think it’s me.”

Grant’s voice surprised me.

I looked up.

“What?”

He didn’t turn around.

“You think I’m the person my father warned you about.”

My heart tightened.

“No.”

“But you’re wondering.”

I didn’t answer.

Because he was right.

Grant finally looked at me.

“I would never hurt our child.”

“I know.”

“And I would never put you in danger intentionally.”

“I know that too.”

“Then what is it?”

I looked down.

“The problem is that I know you love me.”

His expression softened.

“But I also know you hide things when you think it protects me.”

Grant looked away.

Because he knew I was right.

“I spent five years believing I knew my husband.”

I touched the necklace around my neck.

“Then in a few days, I discovered my father was alive, my marriage was connected to a secret investigation, your family was involved in a conspiracy, and my unborn child became a target.”

My voice cracked.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.”

Grant walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was approaching someone who might disappear.

“The one thing that was always real was us.”

I looked at him.

He stopped in front of me.

“I should have told you everything.”

“Yes.”

“I should have trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“I should have let you choose.”

A tear fell from my eye.

“Yes.”

Grant nodded.

“I can’t change what I did.”

A pause.

“But I can stop making the same mistake.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel entered.

“We found something.”

The moment changed.

Grant immediately turned.

“What?”

Daniel placed a laptop on the table.

“We traced the call from Elena’s father.”

Everyone gathered.

“The signal came from an abandoned medical facility outside New York.”

My heart stopped.

“My father is there?”

“We think so.”

Grant looked at the screen.

“Who owns the property?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Daniel.”

He exhaled.

“The Mercer Foundation.”

Silence.

Grant’s face changed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“That place belonged to your father.”

Grant looked at her.

“What?”

Victoria nodded.

“Before he disappeared, he used it for private research.”

“Research about what?”

Victoria looked at me.

“Your father’s evidence.”

The files.

The legacy.

The truth.

Everything had led back there.

Grant closed the laptop.

“We’re going.”

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“It could be a trap.”

“It is a trap.”

Grant’s answer surprised everyone.

“But my wife’s father is there.”

He looked at me.

“And he has answers.”

I knew what he meant.

Not just about my father.

About everything.

We left an hour later.

No backup.

No announcement.

No unnecessary people.

Because if the traitor was close, every extra person was a risk.

The drive was silent.

For once, Grant didn’t try to explain.

He just held my hand.

And I let him.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

Trust didn’t return overnight.

But because somewhere between all the secrets and betrayal, I realized something.

Grant and I were no longer fighting each other.

We were fighting the people who wanted us separated.

The facility appeared in the distance.

Old.

Abandoned.

Forgotten.

Exactly the kind of place where someone would hide the truth.

We entered carefully.

The halls were empty.

Dust covered the floors.

Old files filled the rooms.

Then we heard something.

A voice.

“Grant.”

We froze.

Because it wasn’t an enemy.

It wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It was my father.

We followed the sound.

And there he was.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My entire world stopped.

“Dad.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Elena.”

I ran.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t question.

I just ran into his arms.

For twenty years, I had imagined this moment.

But no imagination could prepare me for finally feeling my father hold me again.

“I’m sorry.”

Those were the first words he said.

Not an explanation.

Not a defense.

An apology.

I cried against his shoulder.

“Why didn’t you come back?”

His answer broke my heart.

“Because every time I tried…”

He looked at Grant.

“Someone stopped me.”

Everyone became still.

Grant stepped forward.

“Who?”

My father looked around the room.

Then at me.

“The same person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

My father’s expression turned serious.

“Elena…”

A pause.

“The person closest to you.”

He looked directly at Grant.

Then past him.

Toward the doorway.

Everyone turned.

And the person standing there made my blood run cold.

Because after all the enemies we had faced…

May you like

After all the secrets we uncovered…

The person who betrayed us was the last person any of us expected.
