Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind Our Perfect Marriage

For five years, I believed I knew everything about my husband.

I knew the way Grant Mercer drank his coffee.

Black.

No sugar.

No milk.

I knew that he hated silence when he was angry, but needed complete silence when he was thinking.

I knew that he always checked the locks twice before going to bed.

I knew that he never slept deeply unless I was beside him.

I knew the small things.

The things that made him human.

But standing in that empty street, watching Grant face Victor Hale, I realized something terrifying.

I knew the man I loved.

I did not know the man everyone else feared.

And maybe those two men had been fighting inside him all along.

Grant moved between me and Victor.

Protective.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

The exact combination that had made me fall in love with him and the same combination that had made me run.

"Elena."

My name left his lips differently this time.

Not like a command.

Not like a warning.

Like a prayer.

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to run into his arms.

I wanted to forget every fear and believe that everything would be okay.

But my feet stayed frozen.

Because Victor's words were still inside my head.

If Elena knew what was inside those files...

She might not be standing beside you.

Grant looked back at me.

His eyes were filled with exhaustion.

Pain.

Regret.

"I can explain."

Those four words almost broke me.

Because I had spent days imagining this moment.

I imagined him angry.

I imagined him blaming me.

I imagined him demanding that I return home.

I never imagined him looking at me like he was afraid I would disappear again.

"What are the files, Grant?"

The question came out quieter than I expected.

Victor smiled.

"Yes, Grant."

He stepped closer.

"Tell your wife the truth."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"Leave."

Victor laughed.

"Still protecting her."

Then he looked at me.

"That is the most interesting thing about your husband, Elena."

I didn't respond.

Victor continued.

"Grant Mercer has destroyed enemies without hesitation. He has taken everything from people who threatened him."

His eyes narrowed.

"But when it comes to you..."

A pause.

"He becomes someone else."

I looked at Grant.

Because that was exactly what confused me.

The world saw a monster.

I saw a man who cried the first time I told him I loved him.

I saw a man who kept my mother's old recipe book even though he couldn't cook.

I saw a man who secretly learned how to make my favorite dessert because I mentioned missing it once.

How could both versions exist?

How could one person be both?

Grant finally spoke.

"Victor is lying."

Victor smiled.

"Am I?"

Grant's silence answered for him.

My heart sank.

Because Grant Mercer always had an answer.

Always.

But now...

He didn't.

"Grant."

He looked at me.

"Tell me."

The street became silent.

The kind of silence before something breaks.

Finally, Grant looked away.

"I was going to tell you that night."

"The anniversary party?"

He nodded.

"The entire reason I planned it was because I wanted to give you something."

I crossed my arms.

"What?"

His expression changed.

"I was ending everything."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Grant took a breath.

"For years, I told myself I could control both lives."

"The businessman."

"The man people feared."

"But I was wrong."

His eyes met mine.

"I saw what it was doing to you."

My throat tightened.

"Then why didn't you stop?"

The question hurt him.

I saw it.

"Because I thought I could fix everything before you ever had to worry."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

"You thought hiding things from me was protecting me?"

Grant lowered his head.

And that was the answer.

The same answer I had feared.

He thought love meant carrying the burden alone.

But he didn't understand.

Secrets created distance.

Even when they were meant as protection.

Victor watched us silently.

Enjoying every second.

"The perfect marriage wasn't so perfect after all."

I looked at him.

"Why do you care?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Because your husband took something from me."

Grant's expression hardened.

"This isn't about the past."

"Everything is about the past."

Victor stepped closer.

"Especially for men like us."

The words sent a chill through me.

Men like us.

That was the part of Grant's world I never understood.

A world built on old enemies.

Old promises.

Old revenge.

Grant turned toward Daniel.

"Get Elena out of here."

I immediately shook my head.

"No."

Grant looked surprised.

"No?"

"No."

I stepped forward.

"I am tired of everyone deciding what I can handle."

His expression softened.

"Elena..."

"I left because I was scared."

My voice cracked.

"But I left because I didn't know the truth."

I touched my stomach.

"I can't protect our child by running forever."

Grant looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Respect.

Not because I stayed.

Because I finally stood beside him.

Victor's phone suddenly rang.

He glanced at the screen.

The calm expression disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Grant noticed.

"What happened?"

Victor ignored him.

Then he looked at me.

"You should ask your husband why your pregnancy was discovered before you even told him."

My blood turned cold.

"What?"

Grant immediately looked at Victor.

"What are you talking about?"

Victor smiled.

"She didn't tell you?"

"No."

"Interesting."

He looked at me.

"Because someone already knew."

A terrible silence followed.

Grant's face changed.

"Who?"

Victor didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the road.

"You have bigger problems."

A vehicle appeared in the distance.

Not one of Grant's.

Everyone noticed.

Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.

Grant moved in front of me.

Again.

Always in front of me.

The vehicle stopped.

Two men stepped out.

Then three.

Not security.

Not police.

People from Grant's world.

People who knew exactly who he was.

Victor looked satisfied.

"I told you."

Grant's voice became cold.

"You brought them."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Grant.

"They came because someone inside your organization has been talking."

That sentence changed everything.

Because Grant trusted very few people.

And if someone close to him had betrayed him...

Then nobody was safe.

Not the mansion.

Not the business.

Not even us.

Grant grabbed my hand.

The simple action almost made me cry.

Because months ago, I would have trusted that hand without hesitation.

Tonight, I needed to remember why.

"You need to listen to me," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"Then tell me everything."

He held my gaze.

"No more secrets."

For a moment, the powerful man disappeared.

Only my husband remained.

"I promise."

The approaching men stopped several yards away.

A voice called out.

"Grant."

He recognized it.

I saw it in his face.

A name.

A betrayal.

Someone from his own world.

Someone he never expected.

The man stepped forward.

And Grant's expression became unreadable.

Because the person standing in front of us was not an enemy.

Not exactly.

It was someone who had worked beside him for years.

Someone who knew our home.

Our habits.

Our weaknesses.

Someone who knew about Elena.

About the baby.

About the files.

Daniel whispered the name.

And even I understood from Grant's reaction that this was bad.

"Marcus."

The man smiled.

"Hello, Grant."

My fingers tightened around Grant's hand.

Because I finally understood.

The danger wasn't only outside.

It had been inside all along.

Marcus looked at me.

Then at my stomach.

And smiled.

"The Mercer heir."

Grant stepped forward.

His voice was dangerously calm.

"You will not come near my family."

Marcus laughed.

"Family?"

He looked at me.

"Does she even know what kind of family she married into?"

I felt Grant's hand tighten around mine.

Not from anger.

From fear.

And that scared me more.

Because Grant Mercer was never afraid.

Not of enemies.

Not of threats.

Not of death.

But now...

He was afraid of what I was about to learn.

Marcus reached into his coat.

Not for a weapon.

For a folder.

A familiar folder.

The same kind Victor had mentioned.

The same files Grant had hidden.

He held it up.

"Maybe it's time Elena finally learns the truth."

Grant's face went pale.

"Don't."

Marcus smiled.

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because she will finally understand that the man she loves has been lying to her since the day they met."

The words hit harder than any threat.

I looked at Grant.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Terrified.

And for the first time, my husband looked like a man who knew he could lose everything.

Not his empire.

Not his power.

Me.

Marcus opened the folder.

And said the words that changed our lives forever.

"Elena, your marriage to Grant Mercer was never an accident."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

Marcus looked directly at me.

"Your husband didn't meet you by chance."

Grant closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

The secret was finally coming out.

May you like

And this time...

There was no way to protect me from the truth.
