Chapter 6 - The Choice Between Love And Survival

The sentence followed me long after Marcus stopped speaking.
Your marriage to Grant Mercer was never an accident.
I wanted to believe I had misunderstood.
I wanted to believe Marcus was only trying to hurt us.
After all, that was what enemies did.
They lied.
They manipulated.
They found the one thing you loved most and tried to destroy it.
But the look on Grant’s face told me something different.
He wasn’t angry because Marcus was lying.
He was afraid because Marcus was telling the truth.
The folder remained in Marcus’s hand.
A simple folder.
A few pieces of paper.
And somehow, it felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.
Grant stepped forward.
“Give me the folder.”
Marcus smiled.
“No.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Marcus.”
The warning in his voice was unmistakable.
It was the voice that made powerful men step back.
The voice that reminded everyone who Grant Mercer really was.
But Marcus didn’t move.
Because he knew something.
He knew Grant’s weakness.
Me.
“You always were good at controlling people,” Marcus said.
“Your employees.”
“Your enemies.”
“Your partners.”
He looked at me.
“But never her.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“Leave Elena out of this.”
Marcus laughed.
“That’s impossible.”
He lifted the folder slightly.
“She is the entire reason this happened.”
My heart pounded.
I looked at Grant.
“Is it true?”
The question was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Grant looked at me.
And for a moment, the dangerous man disappeared.
There was only my husband.
The man who had held me through my darkest nights.
The man who had promised there would never be secrets between us.
“Elena…”
My chest tightened.
“Is what he said true?”
Silence.
That was my answer before he even spoke.
Because silence from Grant Mercer was more terrifying than any confession.
I stepped back.
“Who was I to you when we met?”
His face changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“I loved you.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I couldn’t stop.
Five years.
Five years of memories.
Five years of believing our story was ours.
I needed to know if any of it was real.
Grant looked down.
Then he finally spoke.
“When I met you, I already knew who you were.”
The world seemed to tilt.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
Marcus watched silently.
Almost enjoying my reaction.
I shook my head.
“No.”
Grant stepped toward me.
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
My voice broke.
“You knew me?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“I was going to.”
“When?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“The night we met.”
I stared at him.
“What does that even mean?”
Grant took a breath.
A breath from a man who had spent his entire life hiding everything.
“I didn’t meet you because I was looking for a wife.”
The words hurt.
Even though I knew more was coming.
“I met you because I was investigating a threat.”
I felt cold.
“A threat?”
He nodded slowly.
“Someone was trying to get close to my organization.”
“And I was part of that?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Grant stepped closer.
“You were never part of it.”
“Then why me?”
His eyes softened.
“Because you were the only innocent person in the middle of it.”
I looked at him.
Trying to understand.
Trying to find the man I knew inside the stranger standing in front of me.
Grant continued.
“Five years ago, there was a plan to destroy my company.”
“Someone wanted access to my private information.”
“My accounts.”
“My operations.”
“My weaknesses.”
“And they believed you were connected.”
I swallowed.
“But I wasn’t.”
“No.”
His voice became quieter.
“You weren’t.”
“Then why did you marry me?”
The question hung between us.
Grant looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because I knew he was remembering.
“When I first met you, I thought you were part of the plan.”
My heart sank.
“But then I spent time with you.”
A small, painful smile appeared on his face.
“And I realized I was wrong.”
He looked at me.
“You weren’t a threat.”
“You were the first person who looked at me and didn’t see my name.”
The street became silent.
“You didn’t care about my money.”
“You didn’t care about my power.”
“You didn’t even know why people were afraid of me.”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
Because that part was true.
I had loved Grant before I knew the entire truth.
Before I knew his world.
Before I knew his enemies.
“I fell in love with you,” he whispered.
“And that was the first thing in my life I couldn’t control.”
Marcus interrupted.
“How touching.”
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked disgusted.
“But you forgot the most important part.”
Grant’s expression changed.
“Stop.”
Marcus opened the folder.
“No.”
He pulled out a document.
“Because Elena deserves to know why you really kept her close.”
I looked at Grant.
“What is he talking about?”
Grant didn’t answer.
Marcus held up the paper.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“My father?”
The name alone brought memories.
A man I barely remembered.
A man who disappeared when I was young.
A man everyone told me had abandoned us.
Marcus continued.
“Your father had information.”
Grant closed his eyes.
“Marcus.”
“He knew secrets about people in this organization.”
I stared at Grant.
“And you knew?”
“Yes.”
The answer destroyed me.
“You knew about my father?”
Grant nodded.
“But I didn’t know where he was.”
“You never told me.”
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was tired of hearing those words.
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
Everyone kept saying they protected me.
But nobody ever trusted me enough to let me choose.
“You all keep protecting me from the truth,” I whispered.
Grant looked at me.
“And the truth is always the thing that hurts the most.”
That sentence silenced him.
Because he knew I was right.
A sudden noise interrupted us.
A car approaching.
Daniel immediately turned.
“Grant.”
Everyone became alert.
Another vehicle stopped at the end of the street.
But this time, nobody recognized it.
Grant moved toward me.
“Behind me.”
I didn’t move.
“Stop telling me where to stand.”
He looked surprised.
I stepped beside him.
Not behind.
Beside.
“I’m done being the person everyone protects.”
Grant stared at me.
For a second, something changed in his eyes.
Pride.
Maybe even relief.
Because finally, he understood.
I wasn’t asking him to stop protecting me.
I was asking him to stop hiding me.
The car door opened.
A woman stepped out.
She was older.
Elegant.
Calm.
And the moment Grant saw her, his entire body froze.
I noticed.
Everyone noticed.
“Grant.”
Her voice was soft.
Almost familiar.
Grant whispered her name.
“Victoria.”
My heart tightened.
Another secret.
Another person from his past.
She walked closer.
“I came because you need to know.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Know what?”
Victoria looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
And her face changed.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“The baby.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What about my baby?”
Victoria looked at Grant.
“You never told her?”
Grant said nothing.
Victoria whispered:
“The reason Victor wants your child…”
A pause.
“Is because that child is the only thing standing between him and control of everything.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then she delivered the truth that made the entire world collapse.
“Your baby isn’t just Grant Mercer’s heir.”
She looked at me.
“He is the last connection to your father’s hidden legacy.”
I felt dizzy.
“My father?”
Victoria nodded.
“And now everyone who wants that power will come for you.”
Grant reached for my hand.
This time, I let him.
Because despite everything...
Despite the secrets.
Despite the lies.
I knew one thing.
The danger was real.
And whether I wanted it or not...
Grant and I were no longer fighting about our marriage.
May you like
We were fighting for our child.
And the people coming for us would not stop until they got what they wanted.
