Chapter 7 - The Brother Ryan Tried To Erase

The room became silent.

Not normal silence.

The kind of silence that comes before something breaks.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the voice outside belonged to a man who was supposed to be gone.

Ryan's brother.

The person Ryan told everyone never existed.

Claire slowly stepped backward.

Her face had lost all color.

"No..."

The whisper escaped her lips.

I looked at her.

"You know him."

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

The fear in her eyes said enough.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Claire grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

Daniel looked at her.

"He knows we're here."

"But you don't understand."

Her voice shook.

"He doesn't know what Ryan is capable of."

Daniel stared at her.

"Neither did you."

The words hit harder than expected.

Claire looked down.

Because she knew he was right.

Outside, the man knocked again.

Three slow knocks.

Patient.

Confident.

Like he knew nobody inside could ignore him forever.

"Daniel."

His voice was calm.

Almost familiar.

"I don't want to force my way in."

A pause.

"But I will."

I looked at Daniel.

"Who is he?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"His name is Ethan Whitmore."

The name felt strange.

Because it was the first time Ryan's brother had become real.

Not a rumor.

Not a secret.

A person.

"Why did Ryan say he was dead?"

Daniel looked at Claire.

"Because Ryan needed everyone to believe that."

Ethan knocked again.

This time harder.

Claire moved toward the table.

She picked up the old photograph.

Her hands were shaking.

"Eleven years ago, I saw him."

I looked at her.

"Where?"

"At the Whitmore estate."

She swallowed.

"Ryan told everyone Ethan died in an accident."

"But he didn't."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the photograph.

"He survived."

I felt a cold feeling.

"Why hide him?"

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said quietly:

"Because Ethan knew the truth about Ryan's birth."

My eyes moved between them.

"The truth about his birth?"

Daniel nodded.

"Ryan spent his entire life believing he was the future of the Whitmore family."

A pause.

"But Ethan knew Ryan wasn't the only son."

Claire added:

"And he knew Ryan wasn't the son everyone thought he was."

My mind struggled to process everything.

A secret brother.

A hidden bloodline.

A pregnancy Ryan was terrified of.

Nothing about my life made sense anymore.

I looked at the door.

"Ethan said he knows the real father of my baby."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I was afraid of this."

"What does that mean?"

She looked at me.

"Madeline..."

Her voice became softer.

"You need to prepare yourself."

"For what?"

She looked toward the door.

"For the possibility that Ryan wasn't the only person lying to you."

My heart sank.

Before I could ask anything else, Daniel opened a small drawer near the wall.

He pulled out a gun.

My eyes widened.

"Are you expecting trouble?"

Daniel looked at me.

"No."

Then he looked toward the door.

"I'm expecting the truth."

He unlocked the door.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

"Daniel, wait."

But it was too late.

The door opened.

A man stood outside.

He looked nothing like Ryan.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Ryan always looked polished.

Perfect.

Controlled.

This man looked different.

Older.

Tired.

Like he had spent years running from something.

His eyes moved through the room.

First Daniel.

Then Claire.

Then me.

When he saw me, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"Madeline Carter."

Hearing my full name from him made my skin crawl.

"Who are you?"

He looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

"I'm the person Ryan was most afraid you would meet."

Nobody spoke.

He stepped inside slowly.

Daniel didn't lower his guard.

"Ethan."

The man nodded.

"Daniel."

Claire stared at him.

"You shouldn't be alive."

A painful smile crossed his face.

"That's what Ryan wanted everyone to believe."

I looked at him.

"Why are you here?"

Ethan looked directly at my stomach.

And my heart stopped.

"Because your baby is the reason everything happened."

I felt dizzy.

"No."

I shook my head.

"Everyone keeps saying that. Nobody explains anything."

Ethan nodded.

"You deserve answers."

He reached into his coat.

Daniel immediately raised his hand.

But Ethan only pulled out an envelope.

An old envelope.

"I've been carrying this for eleven years."

He placed it on the table.

Claire looked at it.

Then gasped.

"Where did you get that?"

Ethan looked at her.

"From the person who knew the truth before all of us."

I stared at the envelope.

"Who?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

"Your mother."

My breathing stopped.

"My mother?"

I hadn't heard that name connected to anything.

My mother had died when I was young.

She had nothing to do with the Whitmore family.

At least, that's what I believed.

Ethan pushed the envelope toward me.

"She knew Ryan before you did."

I didn't touch it.

"That's impossible."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"What's impossible is believing everything Ryan told you."

I looked at Daniel.

He didn't disagree.

That scared me.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was old.

But I recognized it instantly.

My mother's handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

I read the first line.

Madeline, if you are reading this, Ryan has already found out about the baby.

My heart stopped.

I looked up.

"How could she know?"

Nobody answered.

I kept reading.

I tried to protect you from the Whitmore family, but I failed.

My eyes filled with tears.

The room disappeared.

My mother knew.

She knew about Ryan.

She knew something would happen.

And she left me a warning I never received.

The next line made my entire body freeze.

The child you are carrying is not Ryan Whitmore's.

I couldn't breathe.

The paper slipped slightly in my hands.

"No..."

Daniel looked shocked.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ethan remained silent.

Because he already knew.

I looked at him.

"Then whose baby is it?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan stepped closer.

May you like

And whispered:

"Madeline, your baby belongs to the only Whitmore brother Ryan could never destroy..."
