Chapter 3 - The Truth Hidden Behind Ryan’s Perfect Family

The phone screen glowed in Daniel’s hand.
For a few seconds, he didn't move.
He just stared at the message like he had seen something impossible.
I watched his expression change.
The calm confidence he had carried since finding me disappeared.
"Who sent it?" I asked.
Daniel didn't answer.
"Daniel."
He slowly turned the phone toward me.
There was only one sentence.
She knows the truth.
My fingers tightened around the folder in my lap.
"Who is she?"
Daniel looked away.
"Someone who should have contacted me years ago."
That answer made my stomach twist.
I had spent eleven years believing my biggest problem was infertility.
Believing my marriage had fallen apart because my body had failed me.
But now, within a few hours, everything I believed about my life was beginning to collapse.
I looked out the window of the SUV.
The mansion disappeared behind us.
The place where I had spent more than a decade trying to earn love.
The place where my husband replaced me before I even had a chance to tell him I was pregnant.
My hand moved toward my stomach.
A small protective instinct appeared inside me.
I still couldn't believe there was a life growing inside me.
A life Ryan didn't know about.
A life he had walked away from without hesitation.
"Open the folder," Daniel said.
His voice pulled me back.
I looked down.
The folder felt heavier than paper should feel.
I opened it slowly.
The first document was a medical report.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then I froze.
It wasn't my medical report.
It was Ryan's.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why do you have this?"
"Because someone wanted the truth hidden."
I read the details again.
I wasn't a doctor.
But I understood enough.
There had been tests.
Private tests.
Tests Ryan had never told me about.
My hands started shaking.
"What am I looking at?"
Daniel stayed silent for a moment.
Then he said:
"Ryan knew there was a possibility the infertility wasn't because of you."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
I looked back at the paper.
"No."
My voice became smaller.
"No, he told me..."
"He told you what he wanted you to believe."
I closed the folder.
My chest felt tight.
For eleven years, every birthday, every family gathering, every dinner with his mother...
Every cruel comment.
Every disappointed look.
Every moment I blamed myself.
Maybe it had all been built on a lie.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Daniel looked ahead through the windshield.
"Because admitting the truth would mean admitting he had spent years blaming the wrong person."
I felt tears forming.
Not because I missed him.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I suddenly realized how much pain I had carried for something that wasn't my fault.
I remembered every night I cried alone.
Every doctor's appointment.
Every time I whispered to myself that maybe I wasn't enough.
Ryan knew.
And he let me believe it.
The SUV became quiet.
Then Daniel spoke.
"There is more."
I looked at him.
"More?"
He nodded.
He pulled out another document.
This one had Ryan's company logo.
A financial agreement.
I read the first line.
My face changed.
"What is this?"
Daniel didn't answer.
I kept reading.
Then I saw Vanessa's name.
And my blood went cold.
"This is impossible."
"No."
Daniel's voice was quiet.
"It's exactly what happened."
The document showed payments.
Large payments.
Made months before Vanessa appeared in our lives.
Payments connected to a private agreement.
I looked at Daniel.
"Are you telling me Ryan planned this?"
Daniel nodded.
"Ryan didn't meet Vanessa by accident."
I stared at the papers.
The woman standing beside my husband that morning.
The woman touching her stomach proudly.
The woman my mother-in-law welcomed into my home.
She wasn't just a replacement.
She was part of a plan.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
I looked down.
Ryan.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Daniel noticed.
"Don't answer."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because right now, Ryan thinks he controls the story."
The phone kept ringing.
I watched his name appear on the screen.
The same name that used to make me smile.
The same name I once saved as "My Love."
Now it looked like a stranger.
The call stopped.
A message appeared.
Madeline, we need to talk. Come back home.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
Come back home.
After throwing me away.
After replacing me.
After letting his mother humiliate me.
I typed nothing.
Another message came.
I know you found out about the pregnancy.
My heart froze.
I looked at Daniel.
He saw the message.
His expression changed.
"How does he know?"
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know.
I had hidden the pregnancy test.
I had hidden the report.
Nobody knew.
Nobody except the doctor.
And now Ryan somehow knew.
Daniel reached for the phone.
"Do not respond."
Another message appeared.
This time from Ryan.
You don't understand what is happening. Vanessa's baby is not what you think.
I stared at the screen.
The same sentence Daniel had almost said earlier.
The same secret everyone seemed to know except me.
"What does he mean?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because suddenly, his phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
His face turned serious.
He answered.
"Where are you?"
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
Even though I couldn't hear every word, I could hear fear.
Daniel's expression changed.
"What do you mean he found you?"
A pause.
Then:
"No. You cannot go there."
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
"Who was that?"
Daniel gripped the steering wheel.
"The person who sent the message."
"Who is she?"
He looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, Daniel looked afraid.
"Her name is Claire."
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way he said it told me everything.
"Who is Claire?"
Daniel took a breath.
"Ryan's first wife."
My body went completely still.
"What?"
"Ryan was married before you."
I shook my head.
"That's impossible."
"Everyone was told she disappeared."
I stared at him.
"Disappeared?"
Daniel nodded.
"Ryan said she left him."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Did she?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because the answer was already written on his face.
No.
She didn't.
The SUV turned onto a quiet road.
I looked at the folder again.
At the documents.
At the secrets.
At the life I thought I understood.
Ryan wasn't just hiding a child.
He was hiding a past.
And somehow, that past was connected to me.
"Where are we going?"
Daniel didn't look away from the road.
"Somewhere safe."
"From who?"
He hesitated.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, he looked at the screen and immediately stopped the car.
His face turned pale.
I looked at the caller ID.
It wasn't a name.
It was an unknown number.
Daniel answered.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then a woman's trembling voice whispered:
"Daniel... he knows Madeline is with you."
Daniel looked at me.
The woman continued:
May you like
"And Ryan already sent someone to bring her back..."
The call suddenly disconnected.
