Chapter 5 - The Secret Ryan Tried To Erase

The door handle moved again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Someone wasn't trying to break in.
Someone wanted us to know they were there.
I stood frozen in the middle of the room.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of me.
"Stay behind me."
My heart was beating so hard I could barely hear anything else.
"Who is it?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He already knew.
And that scared me more than anything.
The door opened.
But the person standing there wasn't Ryan.
It was a woman.
A woman I had never seen before.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
Her hair was messy, her clothes were simple, and her eyes immediately locked onto mine.
"Madeline."
Hearing my name from her mouth made me take a step back.
Daniel lowered his guard slightly.
"Claire."
The woman nodded.
"I didn't have much time."
I stared at her.
This was the woman everyone said disappeared.
Ryan's first wife.
The woman whose existence had been hidden from me for eleven years.
She walked inside and closed the door behind her.
"Ryan knows about the baby."
My body went cold.
"How?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"Because he found the envelope."
I closed my eyes.
The same envelope.
The one I had hidden.
The one containing the only good news I had received in years.
Ryan had seen it.
He knew.
But why hadn't he come after me?
Why hadn't he called?
Why hadn't he told me he knew?
The answer came before anyone said it.
Because he didn't care about me.
He cared about control.
Claire walked toward the table and saw the documents spread across it.
"You showed her."
Daniel nodded.
"She deserved to know."
Claire looked at me.
"I’m sorry."
Those two words almost broke me.
Not because I needed an apology.
Because I realized how many people knew pieces of my life except me.
"Tell me the truth."
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
"I need to know everything."
Claire looked down.
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to run.
Then she sat across from me.
"Ryan didn't choose Vanessa because he loved her."
I waited.
"He chose her because of the child."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"Because Ryan believes that child is his chance to fix everything."
"Fix what?"
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"The Whitmore name."
I frowned.
"I don't understand."
Claire reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Damaged.
She placed it on the table.
"This is why Ryan destroyed my life."
I looked at the envelope.
My hands moved toward it.
But Claire stopped me.
"Before you open it, you need to understand something."
Her voice became serious.
"Ryan is not the man you thought he was."
I almost laughed.
Because that sentence would have hurt me yesterday.
Today, it was just another piece of evidence.
"I know."
Claire looked surprised.
"You don't."
She leaned forward.
"You still think Ryan became cruel because he changed."
A pause.
"He didn't change."
The room went silent.
"He was always protecting something."
My fingers touched the envelope.
"What?"
Claire looked directly at me.
"The truth about his family."
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
A young Ryan stood beside his father.
But there was another person in the picture.
A woman.
And a baby.
My eyes narrowed.
"Who is this?"
Claire's face became pale.
"That's the reason I disappeared."
I looked at her.
"She was pregnant?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
My heart started racing.
"With Ryan's child?"
Claire didn't answer immediately.
And that hesitation told me everything.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
"Then whose child?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
"The baby's father was Ryan's brother."
I froze.
"What brother?"
Claire looked at me.
"The brother Ryan told everyone never existed."
The room became completely silent.
I stared at her.
"Ryan has a brother?"
"Had."
Claire corrected herself.
"According to Ryan."
I looked at the photo again.
A baby.
A woman.
Ryan's family.
Another secret buried beneath everything.
"Why would he hide his own brother?"
Claire's expression changed.
"Because his brother knew the truth about their father."
"What truth?"
Claire looked toward the window.
Like she was afraid someone could hear us.
"The Whitmore fortune was built on a betrayal."
Daniel spoke quietly.
"And Ryan inherited the consequences."
I looked between them.
"I don't understand why this involves me."
Claire looked at my stomach.
And the expression on her face changed.
That scared me.
"Because your baby changes everything."
I placed a hand over my stomach.
"How?"
Claire swallowed.
"Because Ryan believes your child could expose him."
My mind struggled to understand.
"My baby?"
Claire nodded.
"Ryan knows something about your pregnancy that you don't."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Daniel.
"Tell her."
Daniel stayed silent.
"Tell me what?"
He looked down.
Then finally spoke.
"Madeline..."
A pause.
"The reason Ryan was so obsessed with having a child wasn't just about an heir."
I waited.
"It was about proving something."
"Proving what?"
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire whispered:
"That Ryan was the rightful son."
I stared at them.
"Rightful son?"
Claire nodded.
"Years ago, there was a question about Ryan's bloodline."
I shook my head.
"This makes no sense."
"I know."
"But why would my pregnancy matter?"
Claire looked at me.
"Because your baby was tested before you even knew you were pregnant."
My breath stopped.
"What?"
Claire reached for another document.
She handed it to me.
The paper was from a private laboratory.
My eyes scanned the words.
Then stopped.
A DNA analysis.
My hands began shaking.
"Why would there be a DNA test for my baby?"
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly, all three of us heard it.
A sound outside.
A car door closing.
Then another.
Daniel walked toward the window.
His face changed.
"He's not alone."
I stood up.
"Who is outside?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Claire grabbed my arm.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Madeline, you need to leave."
"Why?"
She looked at the front door.
Because she knew something I didn't.
And then my phone vibrated.
One new message.
From Ryan.
I opened it.

Only six words appeared on the screen.
Open the door. I know everything.
