Chapter 4 - The Woman Ryan Buried

The unknown number disappeared from Daniel’s phone.
But the fear on his face remained.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
The car was silent except for the sound of the engine and my own heartbeat.
Someone was coming for me.
Not because I had done something wrong.
Not because I had stolen anything.
But because I had discovered a truth I was never supposed to know.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who was that?"
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
"It was Claire."
The name felt heavier this time.
Ryan's first wife.
The woman everyone believed had disappeared.
The woman whose existence had somehow been erased.
"Why did she say Ryan sent someone after me?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because she knows what Ryan is capable of."
I shook my head.
"I don't understand."
"You will."
He started the car again.
"We need to get somewhere private before we talk."
I looked outside the window.
The streets passed by quickly.
Every person walking by looked normal.
Every car passing us looked harmless.
But my entire world had changed in one day.
That morning, I was a wife who thought she was being abandoned because she couldn't give her husband a child.
Now I was sitting beside a stranger who was telling me my husband had built an entire life around lies.
And the worst part was...
I believed him.
Because deep inside, I remembered every moment that didn't make sense.
The secret phone calls.
The locked office.
The way Ryan suddenly became protective of his schedule.
The way he stopped touching me long before he admitted he wanted someone else.
I had ignored every warning because I loved him.
Daniel drove for nearly thirty minutes before stopping in front of a small private property outside the city.
It wasn't a mansion.
It wasn't luxurious.
It was quiet.
Hidden.
Safe.
At least that was what I hoped.
Inside the house, Daniel placed the folder on the table.
"You need to know everything."
I sat down.
My hands rested on my stomach without thinking.
A small movement.
A protective instinct.
Daniel noticed.
His expression softened.
"Ryan doesn't know yet?"
I shook my head.
"No."
"Good."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because if Ryan knew about the baby, everything would change."
I frowned.
"Isn't that what he wanted?"
Daniel looked at me.
"No."
His answer was immediate.
"He wanted an heir."
The difference between those two words hurt.
A child.
An heir.
To Ryan, maybe they were never the same thing.
Daniel opened another file.
Inside were photographs.
The first one showed Ryan years ago.
Younger.
Different.
Standing beside a woman.
Claire.
She looked happy.
Not like someone who was planning to disappear.
She looked like a woman who believed she was loved.
"Claire was married to Ryan before you."
I stared at the photo.
"When?"
"Before Ryan met you."
I looked up.
"Then why didn't I know?"
"Because Ryan made sure nobody knew."
I felt a chill.
"How?"
Daniel sat across from me.
"Ryan told everyone Claire was unstable. That she left because she couldn't handle his success."
I looked back at the photo.
Claire's smile didn't look unstable.
It looked real.
"What happened to her?"
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
"She found something."
"What?"
"Something Ryan spent years hiding."
I waited.
But Daniel didn't continue.
"What did she find?"
He reached for another document.
"This."
It was a police report.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then I saw a familiar name.
Whitmore.
My breathing changed.
"Ryan's father?"
Daniel nodded.
"Claire discovered that the Whitmore family's wealth wasn't built as cleanly as everyone believed."
I looked confused.
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Everything."
He pushed another paper toward me.
This one was older.
Much older.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then I froze.
There was my name.
Madeline Carter.
But I was younger.
Much younger.
"Why is my name here?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Because he knew the answer would hurt.
"Because Ryan didn't meet you by chance."
I stared at him.
"No."
My voice was barely a whisper.
"No, we met at a charity event."
"That's what Ryan wanted you to believe."
I stood up.
"This is insane."
Daniel stayed calm.
"I know how it sounds."
"No, you don't."
My voice cracked.
"I spent eleven years with this man."
"I know."
"I loved him."
"I know."
"And you're telling me our entire relationship was planned?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Not planned."
A pause.
"Selected."
The word made me sit back down.
Selected.
Like I wasn't a person.
Like I was part of a strategy.
I looked at the documents again.
The truth felt impossible.
But the more I saw...
The more pieces connected.
Ryan's obsession with having a child.
His mother's constant pressure.
The way he never wanted to talk about his past.
Everything suddenly felt different.
"Why me?"
Daniel looked at the papers.
"Because Ryan needed someone who trusted him completely."
I felt tears forming.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I realized I had spent eleven years living inside someone else's plan.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
He looked down.
Another message.
This time from Claire.
He read it silently.
His face changed.
"What?"
He turned the phone toward me.
The message was short.
He knows about the baby.
My blood turned cold.
Impossible.
Ryan couldn't know.
Nobody knew.
I looked at Daniel.
"How?"
He didn't answer.
Because another message appeared.
This one was longer.
He didn't find out from the doctor. He found the envelope you left behind.
My hand moved to my mouth.
The envelope.
The pregnancy report.
I remembered.
Before leaving the mansion, I had hidden it inside my purse.
But when I picked up my suitcase...
My purse had fallen.
I hadn't noticed.
Ryan had found it.
Daniel looked at me.
"Madeline..."
I couldn't breathe.
"What?"
He stared at the screen.
The final message appeared.
Ryan isn't trying to get you back. He's trying to make sure you never tell anyone who the father really is.
I froze.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"The father?"
My voice shook.
"What is she talking about?"
Daniel didn't move.
He looked at me.
And before he could answer, there was a loud sound from outside.
A car door closing.
Then another.
Daniel walked slowly toward the window.
His face changed.
"That's impossible."
I stood up.
"What?"
He looked outside.
And whispered:
"Ryan found us."
The front door handle moved.
Once.
May you like
Twice.
Then it started turning slowly...
