Chapter 6 - The Child Ryan Was Afraid Of

The front door opened.

But nobody entered.

For a few seconds, the entire house was silent.

Then a voice came from outside.

"Madeline."

My blood ran cold.

I knew that voice.

Ryan.

The man who had thrown my suitcase onto the porch that morning.

The man who watched me walk away without stopping me.

The man who now stood outside a hidden house because he was afraid of what I had discovered.

Daniel immediately moved in front of me.

Claire grabbed my arm.

"Don't answer him."

I stared at the door.

A part of me wanted to open it.

Not because I wanted to see Ryan.

Because I wanted answers.

I wanted to look him in the eyes and ask one question.

Why?

Why did he let me hate myself for eleven years?

Why did he let me believe I was the reason our marriage failed?

Why did he replace me before I even had the chance to tell him about our baby?

The door remained closed.

Ryan knocked again.

"Madeline, I know you're inside."

His voice was calmer than I expected.

Almost gentle.

That scared me.

Because I knew that version of Ryan.

The version he showed the world.

The charming businessman.

The patient husband.

The man everyone trusted.

But I had finally seen the other version.

The one who could destroy someone and call it necessary.

"Madeline, please."

I almost laughed.

Please.

The same man who told me to leave was now asking me to listen.

Daniel looked at me.

"Don't let him control this conversation."

I nodded.

Then Ryan spoke again.

"I know about the baby."

The room went completely silent.

Claire's hand tightened around my arm.

Daniel looked at me.

Ryan continued.

"And I know you think I betrayed you."

I stared at the door.

Think?

Was that what he believed?

That this was just a misunderstanding?

That after everything, I was simply upset?

His next words made me angry.

"I can explain."

I walked toward the door.

Daniel immediately stopped me.

"No."

I looked at him.

"I need to hear him."

"You need to be careful."

I looked back at the door.

"I spent eleven years listening to him."

A pause.

"Maybe it's time he listens to me."

Daniel didn't move.

But he stepped aside.

I stayed several feet away from the door.

"Ryan."

Silence.

Then:

"Madeline."

His voice changed the moment he heard me.

The confidence disappeared.

"You shouldn't have come here."

"I know."

"Then why did you?"

Another pause.

"Because I need to talk to my wife."

The word hurt.

Wife.

After everything.

I took a breath.

"I'm not your wife anymore."

Silence.

For the first time, Ryan had no immediate answer.

Then he said:

"You don't understand what happened."

I almost smiled.

"That's the problem, Ryan."

My voice shook.

"I never understood anything because you never told me the truth."

The silence outside became heavier.

"Madeline..."

"No."

I interrupted.

"You don't get to say my name like you still care."

I heard him breathe.

"I do care."

Those words would have destroyed me yesterday.

Today, they meant nothing.

"Then why did you let your mother throw me out?"

No answer.

"Why did you stand beside another woman while I stood there holding a pregnancy report?"

Silence.

"Why did you spend eleven years making me believe I was broken?"

Still nothing.

And somehow, that silence answered everything.

Claire looked at me.

Her expression was sad.

She had lived through this too.

Finally, Ryan spoke.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

I froze.

Protect me?

From what?

"That's the excuse you're using?"

"No."

His voice became desperate.

"There are things you don't know."

I looked toward Daniel.

Then back at the door.

"I know enough."

"No, you don't."

His voice lowered.

"You have no idea what your pregnancy means."

My heart started racing.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then Ryan said something that made my entire body freeze.

"The baby isn't just my child."

I couldn't breathe.

"What?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face changed.

Ryan continued.

"Madeline, I know you think I'm the villain here."

A pause.

"But if you knew the truth about your baby, you would understand why I did what I did."

I stepped closer.

"Tell me."

The door remained closed.

"Tell me the truth."

Ryan didn't answer.

And that made me angry.

Because even now.

Even when everything was falling apart.

He was still deciding what I was allowed to know.

"Ryan."

My voice became colder.

"You don't get to protect me anymore."

A long silence.

Then:

"I didn't know how to tell you."

I closed my eyes.

"Tell me now."

Another silence.

Then footsteps moved away from the door.

My heart jumped.

"Ryan?"

No answer.

I looked at Daniel.

Something was wrong.

Daniel walked toward the window.

He moved the curtain slightly.

Then froze.

"What?"

He didn't respond.

"Daniel?"

He turned around.

"He didn't come alone."

My stomach dropped.

Claire immediately looked terrified.

"Who is with him?"

Daniel looked outside again.

Then he whispered:

"Someone who should be dead."

The room went cold.

I stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Before Daniel could answer, there was another knock.

Not Ryan's.

A different sound.

Slower.

More controlled.

Then a man's voice came from outside.

"Daniel."

Claire covered her mouth.

"No..."

I looked at her.

"Who is that?"

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

"Ryan's brother."

My heart stopped.

"The brother you said didn't exist?"

Claire nodded.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"The one Ryan buried with his secrets."

The man outside spoke again.

"Daniel, open the door."

Nobody moved.

Then he said one more sentence.

May you like

And every person inside the room went silent.

"Madeline deserves to know who the real father of her baby is."
