Chapter 9 - The Man I Trusted Was Holding the Missing Piece

The photograph shook slightly between my fingers.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was trying to convince myself I was seeing something that wasn’t real.

But I was.

The picture was clear.

Too clear.

My wife.

My newborn daughters.

And standing beside them...

Victor.

My security chief.

My friend.

The man who had protected my family for eight years.

The man I had trusted more than almost anyone in my life.

The room became completely silent.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Even the twins seemed to sense the tension and became unusually quiet.

I looked at Victor.

Waiting.

Waiting for him to explain.

Waiting for him to tell me there was some innocent reason.

A misunderstanding.

A coincidence.

Anything.

But Victor didn’t speak.

And that silence hurt more than any answer could have.

“Victor.”

My voice was low.

Dangerously calm.

He looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.”

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Pain.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because guilt was simple.

Pain was complicated.

“Tell me why you’re in this picture.”

Victor looked toward the nursery.

Toward my daughters.

Then back at me.

“Because Isabella trusted me.”

My jaw tightened.

“And you didn’t think I deserved to know?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Then what was it?”

Victor took a breath.

But before he answered, Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His eyes remained on Victor.

“Don’t make a decision before hearing the whole story.”

That irritated me.

“You’re defending him?”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I’m telling you that Isabella was careful for a reason.”

I looked between them.

Two men.

Both connected to my wife.

Both carrying secrets.

Both knowing parts of Isabella’s life I had never seen.

And I was the one who was supposed to have known her best.

“Everyone keeps saying Isabella was protecting me.”

My voice cracked slightly.

“But nobody thought I deserved the truth.”

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer.

Victor finally spoke.

“I should have told you.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He lowered his eyes.

“But Isabella made me promise.”

I laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“Another promise.”

I looked around the room.

“How many people were keeping secrets from me?”

Nobody responded.

Victor walked slowly toward the desk.

“I met Isabella before you knew me.”

That surprised me.

“What?”

He nodded.

“Before I became your security chief.”

I stared.

“When?”

“During the time you were building your company.”

I frowned.

“I don’t remember.”

“You wouldn’t.”

That answer bothered me.

“Explain.”

Victor looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“Your company was smaller back then. You had enemies you didn’t know existed.”

I crossed my arms.

“And Isabella knew?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Victor hesitated.

“She was investigating something.”

My heart sank.

Again.

“What?”

“Your first major investor.”

The room changed.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about a stranger.

This was about my entire life.

My empire.

My past.

“What about him?”

Victor spoke carefully.

“He wasn’t who he claimed to be.”

I looked at Marcus.

Then Elise.

Everyone had a piece of this story.

Everyone except me.

“What did Isabella find?”

Victor looked down.

“Money transfers.”

I stared.

“Illegal transfers?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“From my company?”

“No.”

He paused.

“Through your company.”

The difference mattered.

A lot.

Someone had used my name.

My business.

My reputation.

To hide something.

“How long did she know?”

Victor’s face changed.

“Years.”

I closed my eyes.

Years.

My wife had been carrying this while I was building my empire.

While I was working late.

While I thought I was creating security for my family.

She was secretly trying to protect us from the very world I had built.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Victor looked at me.

“Because she knew what you would do.”

I almost smiled.

Everyone said the same thing.

Because everyone knew me.

Except maybe I never knew myself.

“You all think I’m some kind of weapon.”

Nobody spoke.

Victor continued.

“She loved you, Daniel.”

His voice softened.

“She knew you would burn everything down to protect your family.”

I looked away.

Because that was exactly what I would have done.

A silence followed.

Then Elise spoke.

“Who is the man in the photo?”

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the picture.

Not Victor.

Someone behind him.

Someone partially hidden.

Someone I hadn’t noticed before.

My eyes narrowed.

I looked closer.

A man standing near the doorway.

Only part of his face visible.

But enough.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized him.

“Impossible.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?”

I handed him the photograph.

He looked.

Then his expression changed.

“No.”

I stared.

“You know him.”

Marcus slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Marcus’s face became serious.

“Someone Isabella was trying to expose.”

The room went cold.

“Name.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Richard Hale.”

The name meant something.

A former business partner.

A man who had disappeared from the public eye years ago.

A man I thought had retired.

“You’re saying Richard was involved?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Marcus looked at me.

“You trusted him.”

I said nothing.

Because I had.

Richard had been one of the first people who believed in me.

He helped me grow my company.

He was like family.

And now...

Every person I trusted seemed connected to a secret.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Another message.

Everyone turned.

I opened it.

A video file.

No words.

Just a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my office.

The angle was from the hidden camera.

The timestamp was three months earlier.

Before Isabella died.

I watched.

And then I saw her.

My wife.

Alive.

Sitting at my desk.

Talking to someone.

Someone off camera.

Her expression was serious.

Afraid.

Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.

“I know what you did, Richard.”

The video stopped.

The room went silent.

Nobody breathed.

Because now we knew.

The person behind everything was not Marcus.

Not Victor.

Not Elise.

It was someone Isabella had been fighting before she died.

Someone she had tried to expose.

Someone who believed my wife took a secret to her grave.

But he was wrong.

Because Isabella had left a trail.

And now I was following it.

I looked at Marcus.

“What happens next?”

For the first time since he arrived...

Marcus looked afraid.

“Now?”

A pause.

“Now Richard knows we found the camera.”

I looked toward the nursery.

My daughters.

My family.

“What will he do?”

Marcus’s answer was quiet.

“He’ll do what people like him always do.”

“What?”

“He’ll try to erase the evidence.”

The lights suddenly went out.

Every screen in the mansion turned black.

Then one message appeared on every monitor.

One sentence.

Written in white letters.

“You should have let the past stay buried.”

And beneath it...

A countdown began.

10:00

09:59

09:58

Victor immediately moved toward the security controls.

“It’s not a power failure.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Then what is it?”

Victor looked at me.

“Someone has taken control of the system.”

I looked at Marcus.

He already knew.

Because his expression said what nobody wanted to admit.

Richard Hale wasn’t running.

He was coming.

May you like

And this time...

He wasn’t hiding.
