Chapter 12 - The Truth About Isabella’s Final Days

Nobody spoke.
The silence inside the vault was heavier than anything I had ever experienced.
Not the silence of an empty house.
Not the silence after losing someone.
This was different.
This was the silence that came before a truth destroyed everything you believed.
I stared at Victor.
The man who had protected my family.
The man who had stood beside me during the worst year of my life.
The man who had carried my wife’s final secrets.
And now...
The man who had deleted records connected to her death.
“Explain.”
My voice was quiet.
But everyone in that room knew exactly how dangerous that quiet was.
Victor looked down.
“I should have told you.”
I almost laughed.
Those words.
Again.
Everyone always said the same thing.
I should have told you.
I should have warned you.
I should have trusted you.
But nobody ever did.
“Explain.”
Victor took a breath.
“It started before Isabella went to the hospital.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Tell him everything.”
Victor looked at him.
“You knew?”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not this part.”
That surprised me.
For the first time, Marcus looked just as confused as I was.
Victor placed both hands on the table.
“I didn’t delete those records because I wanted to hide something from you.”
I stared at him.
“Then why?”
“Because Isabella asked me.”
The answer made no sense.
“My wife asked you to erase evidence about her own illness?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at the letter.
“Because she believed the records were dangerous.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain anything.”
Victor looked at me.
“Daniel, your wife was not just sick.”
The words landed slowly.
“She was investigating why she was sick.”
My heart stopped.
The entire world seemed to narrow into that one sentence.
“What?”
Victor continued.
“When Isabella started getting symptoms, the doctors believed it was a rare medical condition.”
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what they told me.”
“Yes.”
“But?”
Victor looked at Marcus.
“Marcus discovered something unusual.”
Marcus nodded.
“Her medical reports didn’t match.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It means some of her test results were changed.”
My body went cold.
“Changed by who?”
Nobody answered.
But I already knew.
Someone with access.
Someone who could alter records.
Someone close enough to reach her.
The same person who had been watching my house.
The same person who had been hiding the truth.
I looked at Victor.
“You deleted the records.”
“Yes.”
“And you expect me to believe you were helping?”
“I was.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Victor’s expression broke.
“Because Isabella begged me not to.”
I looked away.
Again.
Another promise.
Another secret.
But this time...
Something was different.
Because I remembered Isabella’s letter.
The person responsible is not the one who hates us. It is the one who believes they love us.
Victor had not been acting like an enemy.
He had been protecting something.
But what?
“Where are the original records?”
Victor became silent.
That silence answered before he did.
“You kept them.”
He nodded.
“I couldn’t destroy everything.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
Victor reached into his jacket.
He removed a small flash drive.
“I kept a copy.”
Marcus immediately looked at it.
“What’s on it?”
Victor handed it to me.
“Everything.”
I stared at the device.
A tiny piece of plastic.
But inside it was possibly the answer to the question that had haunted me for a year.
Why did Isabella die?
Who was responsible?
And why did she hide the truth from me?
We returned to the mansion within the hour.
The entire drive back was silent.
Elise stayed with the girls.
Marcus sat across from me.
Victor remained quiet.
Nobody trusted anyone completely anymore.
And maybe that was the most painful part.
A family built on love had become a room full of secrets.
When we arrived, Elise immediately came toward us.
She looked at my face.
She knew something had happened.
“What did you find?”
I looked at her.
“The truth about Isabella’s illness.”
Her expression changed.
“What?”
I held up the flash drive.
“This.”
Elise became pale.
“She knew.”
I froze.
“What did you say?”
“She knew there was something wrong.”
I stepped closer.
“How?”
Elise looked at the floor.
“Because she told my mother.”
I felt the anger return.
“Why does everyone know except me?”
My voice cracked.
Not from anger.
From pain.
Elise’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Isabella was trying to protect the person she loved most.”
I looked away.
“Me?”
She nodded.
“And that was her mistake.”
The honesty surprised me.
“She thought protecting you meant carrying everything alone.”
I looked at my daughters.
Sleeping peacefully upstairs.
“She was always doing that.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“She loved you so much that she forgot you deserved the chance to love her back.”
Those words hurt.
Because they were true.
I had spent months angry that Isabella left me.
But maybe she had spent her final months afraid that leaving me meant destroying me.
Victor connected the flash drive to my computer.
The files appeared.
Hundreds.
Medical documents.
Messages.
Emails.
Photos.
And one video.
Created three days before Isabella entered the hospital.
My hands became cold.
“Play it.”
Victor clicked.
The screen showed Isabella.
Sitting in our home office.
Alive.
Tired.
But determined.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Seeing her again was like being hit by a wave.
Her voice filled the room.
“Daniel, if you are watching this…”
She paused.
Her eyes became emotional.
“I’m sorry.”
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Not another goodbye.
But then she continued.
“This is not a goodbye.”
I looked at the screen.
“It’s an explanation.”
She took a breath.
“I know you will want answers. I know you will want someone to blame.”
A small sad smile appeared.
“That’s who you are.”
I almost broke.
Because even in a video from the past...
She still knew me.
“But before you do anything, you need to understand something.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Your anger is exactly what they are expecting.”
Everyone became still.
“They want you to react.”
A pause.
“They want you to destroy everything before you discover the truth.”
The video continued.
“I found evidence that someone inside our company has been manipulating financial records.”
Richard.
We all knew.
“But that is not the only thing.”
Isabella looked away.
“There is someone helping him.”
My heart sank.
Someone helping Richard.
Another person.
Another secret.
Then she said the sentence that changed everything.
“Daniel, the person closest to me is the person I’m most afraid of.”
The video paused.
Everyone looked at each other.
Then Isabella continued.
“Not because they want to hurt me.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Because they believe they are saving me.”
The room became silent.
The phrase.
The same phrase.
The person who believes they love us.
I stared at the screen.
“Who?”
I whispered.
As if Isabella could hear me.
Then she answered.
Not with a name.
With a warning.
“If you find this video, do not trust anyone who tells you they did it for your own good.”
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then my computer received a notification.
A new message.
No sender.
Only one sentence.
“You finally found Isabella’s last recording.”
A second message appeared.
“Now ask yourself why she never finished it.”
I stared at the screen.
Because they were right.
The video had ended suddenly.
Not like Isabella stopped recording.
Like someone stopped her.
I looked at Marcus.
Then Victor.
Then Elise.
And finally...
At the security camera monitor.
Because suddenly I understood.
The person who had been watching us knew we found the video.
Which meant one terrifying possibility remained.
They were still inside the system.
Still watching.
Still listening.
And maybe...
They were closer than any of us realized.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No voice.
Only a recording.
Isabella’s voice.
My wife’s voice.
Whispering one sentence.
“Daniel, if you hear this… run.”
The call ended.
And upstairs...
My daughters started crying.
Not ordinary crying.
The same terrified scream from the night everything began.
2:03 a.m.
The exact same time.
I looked at the clock.
And my blood turned cold.
Because it wasn’t night.
It was afternoon.

Someone had triggered the nursery alarm.
Someone was inside my home.
