Chapter 3 - The Letter My Wife Hid From Me

I stared at the envelope for what felt like hours.
But only seconds had passed.
Five words.
That was all Isabella had written on the outside.
Trust Elise when I am gone.
Simple.
Quiet.
Terrifying.
Because my wife had never been the type of person to leave meaningless messages.
Isabella Caruso believed every word mattered.
Every action had a reason.
Every decision had a purpose.
That was one of the things I loved most about her.
She was different from me.
I built my life through calculations.
Numbers.
Strategies.
Risk assessments.
I always needed to know the outcome before I made a move.
But Isabella...
She trusted her heart.
Sometimes I thought that was why we worked.
She reminded me that not everything valuable could be measured.
And I reminded her that the world could be cruel.
Except now...
I wondered if maybe the world had been crueler than either of us realized.
“Open it.”
Elise’s voice was quiet.
I looked at her.
“You’ve had this letter for how long?”
She hesitated.
“Almost a year.”
My expression hardened.
“A year?”
She nodded slowly.
“I know how that sounds.”
“It sounds like you kept something from me.”
“I did.”
Her honesty surprised me.
Most people would have defended themselves.
Explained.
Created excuses.
Elise simply admitted it.
“But Isabella made me promise.”
I looked back at the envelope.
“My wife asked you to hide a letter from me?”
“She asked me to wait.”
“Why?”
Elise lowered her eyes.
“Because she knew you.”
That answer irritated me.
“You didn’t know me.”
“No,” she said.
“But she did.”
The truth hurt.
Because Isabella had known me better than anyone.
Better than my business partners.
Better than my friends.
Sometimes better than I knew myself.
I remembered the nights after we fought.
The arguments were never really about what we said.
They were about what we didn’t say.
I would complain about work.
She would tell me I was missing my life.
I would tell her I was building a future for our family.
She would ask me:
“What if the future arrives and you missed everything important along the way?”
Back then, I thought she was being emotional.
Now...
Standing in the kitchen with a letter from her in my hand...
I wondered if she had been trying to warn me.
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
The handwriting immediately broke something inside me.
I had forgotten how much I missed seeing it.
The way she formed her letters.
The slight curve at the end of her sentences.
The tiny details only someone who loved her would notice.
I took a breath.
Then I began reading.
My love,
If you are reading this, then I am not beside you anymore.
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
I had to look away.
Elise quietly stepped back, giving me space.
I continued.
First, I need you to know something.
You will blame yourself.
My hands tightened around the paper.
Because she was right.
You will tell yourself that you should have noticed more. That you should have done something different. That your money, your power, and your determination should have been enough to save me.
A tear fell onto the page.
I quickly wiped it away.
But you cannot carry that weight forever, Daniel.
I froze.
She rarely called me Daniel.
Only when she was being completely serious.
You are going to become a protector. I know you. You will build walls around our daughters. You will hire guards. You will create rules. You will try to control every danger in the world.
I swallowed.
Because that was exactly what I had done.
But our daughters do not need a fortress. They need a father.
The words hit me harder than anything.
I closed my eyes.
Because I knew.
Deep down...
I knew.
I had been protecting my daughters from everything except the one thing they needed most.
Their grief.
When I am gone, there will be days when you feel like happiness is disrespectful. Like laughing means forgetting me. Like moving forward means leaving me behind.
My breathing became uneven.
Because that was exactly how I felt.
Every smile from my daughters felt like something I had to earn.
Every peaceful moment felt temporary.
Every time I almost felt happy...
Guilt returned.
Please listen to me.
If Maisie and Rosie laugh again, let them.
If someone helps them smile, let them.
Do not punish yourself because someone else brings light into their lives.
I stopped reading.
I couldn't continue.
Not yet.
Because those words were too painful.
Elise sat across from me quietly.
“She loved you very much.”
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“She knew exactly what I would do.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Elise looked at the twins.
“Because she told me.”
I looked up.
“She talked to you?”
“Many times.”
The answer shocked me.
“When?”
“During the pregnancy.”
I stared at her.
“You knew Isabella while she was pregnant?”
Elise nodded.
“My mother worked here, remember?”
I did remember.
But suddenly I felt like I had missed an entire chapter of my own life.
“She was scared,” Elise said.
My chest tightened.
“Scared?”
“She was afraid she wouldn’t be here long enough to raise them.”
I became still.
“What are you talking about?”
Elise looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know how much she told you.”
“She told me everything.”
The moment I said it, I knew it wasn’t true.
Because if she had...
Would she have left a letter?
Would she have prepared someone else to help my daughters?
Elise noticed.
“She didn’t want to scare you.”
My voice became quiet.
“Scare me about what?”
Elise took a deep breath.
“Her health.”
I looked at the letter again.
My heart started racing.
“What did she know?”
Before Elise could answer, the nursery monitor suddenly made a sound.
A small crackling noise.
Then static.
We both turned.
The screen flickered.
For a moment, the camera showed the nursery.
Then it went black.
I immediately stood.
“What happened?”
Elise looked confused.
“It does that sometimes.”
“No.”
I walked toward the monitor.
“It doesn’t.”
My security system was one of the best available.
Nothing malfunctioned without a reason.
I checked the screen.
The signal returned.
The girls were still sleeping peacefully.
But something felt wrong.
A strange feeling.
The same feeling I had before walking into dangerous situations.
Something was hidden.
Something I couldn’t see.
“Elise.”
She looked at me.
“What else did Isabella tell you?”
Her face changed.
A small hesitation.
That was enough.
I knew.
There was more.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Elise looked toward the sleeping twins.
Then back at me.
Finally, she whispered:
“She told me that if anything happened to her…”
She paused.
“She was worried someone would try to take your daughters away from you.”
The room became ice cold.
“What?”
Elise looked terrified.
“She told me not to tell you unless I had proof.”
“Proof of what?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then she reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out something different.
A small old photograph.
She placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
And my blood turned cold.
It was a picture of Isabella.
Pregnant.
Standing outside our mansion.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was a man I had never seen before.
A man looking directly at the camera.
A man Isabella seemed afraid of.
On the back of the photograph were four handwritten words.
Words written by my wife.
“If he returns, run.”
I looked at Elise.
“Who is this man?”
Her face turned pale.
And then she answered.
“The reason Isabella asked me to protect your daughters.”
I held my breath.
“His name is Marcus Vale.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But the fear in Elise’s voice meant everything.
Because for the first time since Isabella died...
I realized something terrifying.

Maybe my wife’s death was not the end of the story.
Maybe it was the beginning.
