Chapter 5 - The Man Who Knew My Wife Before I Did

The phone remained silent in my hand long after the call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Unknown number.
No trace.
No location.
Nothing.
Just like a ghost.
But ghosts didn’t know my name.
They didn’t know my wife.
And they didn’t know the one thing that could destroy the fragile peace I had rebuilt after losing Isabella.
My family.
Behind me, Elise stood completely still.
The fear on her face told me something important.
She knew more than she had admitted.
Not everything.
But enough.
“Have you heard that voice before?”
My question was direct.
Elise looked at the floor.
“No.”
I watched her carefully.
She wasn’t lying.
But she was hiding something.
There was a difference.
Over the years, I had become very good at reading people.
In business, people rarely told you what they wanted.
They showed you.
A nervous glance.
A delayed answer.
A hand moving toward a phone.
A small change in breathing.
Elise was afraid.
But not of me.
She was afraid of what was coming.
“Tell me the truth.”
Her eyes lifted.
“I am.”
“No.”
I placed the photograph on my desk.
“You’re telling me what you think Isabella wanted you to tell me.”
She became quiet.
That silence confirmed it.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the black vehicle remained parked near the gate.
Security cameras showed nothing unusual.
No movement.
No driver.
No explanation.
It was a message.
Someone wanted me to know they could reach me.
“Why didn’t you tell me Marcus Vale existed?”
Elise swallowed.
“Because Isabella made me promise.”
“She made you promise to let me live in ignorance?”
“She made me promise to protect your daughters.”
I turned.
“By keeping secrets from me?”
Her voice became stronger.
“No.”
A pause.
“By keeping secrets from everyone.”
That answer caught my attention.
“Everyone?”
Elise nodded.
“She didn’t trust anyone.”
The words hurt.
Because I was supposed to be the person she trusted most.
“Not even me?”
Elise’s expression softened.
“She trusted you with her heart.”
She looked toward the nursery.
“But she was afraid you would sacrifice yourself trying to protect her.”
I didn’t respond.
Because again...
She was right.
That was the worst part.
Everyone thought my greatest strength was that I never gave up.
But Isabella knew the truth.
Sometimes that same quality destroyed me.
If someone threatened my family, I didn’t think about consequences.
I acted.
That was why she hid things.
Not because she didn’t love me.
Because she loved me enough to know exactly what I would do.
I looked at the photograph again.
The picture of Isabella.
Pregnant.
Afraid.
With Marcus Vale standing beside her.
“Who was he?”
Elise slowly walked closer.
“I only know what Isabella told my mother.”
“Which was?”
“That Marcus saved her.”
I frowned.
“Saved her from what?”
Elise shook her head.
“She never explained.”
The room felt smaller.
“How can someone save her and become someone she fears?”
Elise looked at me.
“Maybe because people are not always one thing.”
I said nothing.
Because that sentence stayed with me.
Good people could make mistakes.
Bad people could do good things.
And sometimes the most dangerous people were the ones who knew how to appear trustworthy.
I spent the next hour searching through everything.
Old files.
Emails.
Documents.
Anything connected to Isabella.
I had access to almost everything.
My company records.
Financial information.
Private investigators.
Security archives.
But nothing.
No Marcus Vale.
No connection.
No evidence.
It was like he had never existed.
And that bothered me.
Because people did not disappear from my world without a reason.
At sunrise, I called my head of security.
“Victor.”
“Yes, sir?”
“I need information on someone.”
“Name?”
“Marcus Vale.”
There was a pause.
A very small one.
But I heard it.
“Victor?”
“Sorry, sir.”
His voice changed.
“Did you say Marcus Vale?”
I became still.
“You know him.”
“No, sir.”
“That wasn’t an answer.”
Silence.
Then:
“I know the name.”
My grip tightened.
“Explain.”
Victor hesitated.
“Mr. Caruso, I don’t think this is something you want discussed over the phone.”
That sentence immediately changed everything.
“Come to my office.”
“Yes, sir.”
Twenty minutes later, Victor entered my office.
He had worked for me for eight years.
He was former military.
A man who never showed emotion.
But now...
He looked uncomfortable.
That alone was concerning.
“Tell me.”
Victor placed a folder on my desk.
“I found this.”
I opened it.
Inside were old documents.
Newspaper articles.
Photographs.
Reports.
And one name.
Marcus Vale.
I looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
Victor hesitated.
“From a restricted archive.”
“Why was it restricted?”
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
Because whatever was inside was dangerous.
I opened the first article.
The headline immediately caught my attention.
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN SAVES WOMAN AFTER CAR ACCIDENT
The photograph showed Marcus Vale.
Younger.
Different.
But unmistakably the same man.
The article described how he rescued a woman from a vehicle crash years ago.
The woman’s name was blurred.
But I recognized the date.
The same year Isabella and I met.
I turned the page.
Another article.
MYSTERIOUS INVESTOR HELPS FAMILY AFTER FINANCIAL COLLAPSE
Another.
PRIVATE DONOR FUNDS MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR UNKNOWN WOMAN
Again.
Marcus Vale.
Always appearing when someone needed help.
Always the hero.
Always nearby.
I looked confused.
“This doesn’t make sense.”
Victor nodded.
“That’s what bothered me.”
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
Victor opened another document.
“This man has a pattern.”
“What pattern?”
“He appears in people’s lives during moments of crisis.”
I stared at the papers.
“What does that mean?”
Victor’s expression became serious.
“It means he doesn’t just find broken situations.”
A pause.
“He creates relationships with people when they are vulnerable.”
The room became silent.
I looked back at the photograph of Isabella.
Suddenly, the message on my desk made sense.
You never knew her.
Maybe it wasn’t accusing Isabella.
Maybe it was accusing me.
Maybe there was an entire part of my wife’s life I had never seen.
“Find him.”
Victor looked surprised.
“Sir?”
“Find Marcus Vale.”
“What if he doesn’t want to be found?”
I looked at the nursery.
At my daughters.
At the life Isabella left behind.
“Then he should have stayed away from my family.”
Victor nodded.
But before he left, my office phone rang.
The same unknown number.
I answered.
This time, I didn’t speak.
Neither did the person on the other end.
Then a sound.
A baby crying.
My blood froze.
I looked toward the nursery.
The sound continued.
A recording.
Then Marcus spoke.
“You should have listened to your wife.”
My voice became cold.
“Where are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“You’re still thinking like a businessman, Daniel.”
The voice lowered.
“You’re trying to find me.”
A pause.
“But you should be asking why Isabella was trying to find me.”
My heart stopped.
“What did you do to her?”
Silence.
Then the words that changed everything.
“I didn’t hurt your wife.”
A pause.
“She was trying to protect you from what she discovered about me.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What did she discover?”
The answer came slowly.
“The truth about who I really am.”
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because for the first time...
May you like
I wasn’t sure whether Marcus Vale was the enemy.
Or the only person who knew why my wife was really gone.
