Chapter 14 - The Person Isabella Was Trying to Protect Me From

I stared at the name on the page.

For several seconds, my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

It was impossible.

It had to be.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything except the truth sitting in front of me.

Because the name written in Isabella’s handwriting belonged to someone I had trusted with my entire life.

Someone who had stood beside me during every crisis.

Someone who had helped raise my daughters after their mother died.

Someone I had never once questioned.

Victor.

The room became completely silent.

I looked up slowly.

Victor was standing near the doorway.

The same man who had protected my family.

The same man who had found the hidden camera.

The same man who had claimed Isabella asked him to destroy the medical records.

The same man who had always been there.

Too close.

The thought made my stomach turn.

“Daniel…”

Victor’s voice was quiet.

Almost broken.

I closed the journal.

Not because I wanted to hide it.

Because I needed one more second to understand.

“Isabella wrote your name.”

Victor didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Elise stepped back.

Marcus’s expression changed.

Clara looked down.

Nobody was surprised.

That hurt the most.

Nobody.

I looked at all of them.

“You knew.”

No one answered.

My voice became colder.

“You all knew.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why does nobody look surprised?”

Silence.

Victor finally spoke.

“Because we knew there was a possibility.”

A possibility.

That word almost made me laugh.

A year of grief.

A year of unanswered questions.

A year believing my wife died because of an illness.

And everyone around me had been carrying pieces of the truth.

I looked at Victor.

“Tell me.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me why my wife wrote your name.”

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time since I knew him...

Victor looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying a weight that finally became too heavy.

“I need you to understand something.”

I waited.

“I never wanted to hurt Isabella.”

The sentence made my chest tighten.

Because it was exactly what Isabella had written.

The person responsible is not the one who hates us. It is the one who believes they love us.

“Then explain.”

Victor looked toward the nursery.

Toward my daughters.

“She asked me to protect them.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

His voice cracked.

“She asked me to protect them from everyone.”

I stared.

“Everyone?”

“Yes.”

“Including you?”

The silence that followed was the answer.

My anger disappeared.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I was suddenly terrified.

“What did you do, Victor?”

He looked at me.

“I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I trusted the wrong person.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who?”

Victor looked at him.

Then at me.

“Richard.”

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain Isabella’s journal.”

Victor nodded.

“Because Richard was not the only problem.”

My heart sank.

Another layer.

Another secret.

“Then who?”

Victor looked at the journal.

“She wrote my name because she was afraid of what I would do.”

I became still.

“What?”

Victor continued:

“She knew I would protect her.”

“That’s not a crime.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“But I crossed a line.”

Nobody spoke.

“What line?”

Victor took a deep breath.

“When Isabella became suspicious of Richard, she asked me to investigate.”

I nodded slowly.

“That makes sense.”

“Yes.”

“But then I found something else.”

“What?”

Victor looked at me.

“I found out Richard wasn’t the only person hiding information.”

The room became cold.

“Who else?”

Victor hesitated.

“Someone in your medical team.”

My expression changed.

“My doctors?”

“Yes.”

Marcus immediately looked angry.

“What are you saying?”

Victor continued.

“Someone had access to Isabella’s medical information.”

I looked at the journal.

“But why would Isabella write your name?”

Victor’s answer came quietly.

“Because I found out.”

I stared.

“And?”

“And I confronted them.”

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“What happened?”

Victor looked away.

“I scared them.”

The words were simple.

But the meaning was not.

“You threatened them.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“But I made them afraid.”

A silence followed.

“And Isabella thought that was dangerous.”

I understood.

She knew Victor.

She knew his loyalty.

She knew his anger.

She knew what he would do for the people he loved.

Especially her.

Especially my daughters.

“She was afraid you would destroy everything.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

My hands tightened.

“So she wrote your name because you were a danger.”

Victor looked at me.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“She wrote my name because I was the person most likely to become one.”

That answer surprised me.

Because it was honest.

And somehow, honesty hurt more.

A sound suddenly came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The front door.

A slow knock.

Three times.

The same pattern.

My entire body froze.

Elise whispered:

“That’s the knock.”

The one Isabella warned her about.

Victor immediately moved.

But I stopped him.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

For the first time in months...

I didn’t react.

I thought.

I looked at the people in the room.

Victor.

Marcus.

Elise.

Clara.

All carrying secrets.

All connected to Isabella.

All claiming they were protecting me.

Then I looked at the door.

The person outside knew the same things we knew.

They knew Isabella’s journal existed.

They knew we had found the truth.

They knew where to come.

“Daniel,” Marcus said quietly.

“You don’t know who it is.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

I walked toward the entrance.

“But I know one thing.”

Everyone watched me.

“I’m done being protected from the truth.”

I opened the security screen.

The camera showed a person standing outside.

A woman.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized her.

Not from my life.

From Isabella’s journal.

The final page.

The name written underneath Victor’s.

The person Isabella believed was connected to everything.

The person who had access to her medical records.

The person who knew her secrets.

The person who had disappeared after Isabella died.

The person standing outside my house.

Was the doctor who treated my wife.

Dr. Evelyn Warren.

The woman who had signed Isabella’s final medical report.

The woman who told me there was nothing anyone could do.

The woman who looked me in the eyes and said:

“Your wife fought as hard as she could.”

I opened the door.

She looked at me.

And the first thing she said was:

“I’m sorry, Daniel.”

A pause.

“I should have told you the truth before Isabella died.”

My heart stopped.

“Why didn’t you?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Isabella made me promise.”

I almost laughed.

Another promise.

Another secret.

Another person.

But then she said something that changed everything.

“Your wife wasn’t poisoned.”

I froze.

“Then what happened?”

Dr. Warren looked past me.

At the people inside the house.

At Victor.

At Marcus.

At Elise.

Then back at me.

“She was trying to expose the person who caused it.”

My voice became quiet.

“Who?”

Dr. Warren whispered:

“The person who had access to everything.”

A pause.

“The person who knew every move she made.”

My blood turned cold.

“Who?”

Dr. Warren looked at Victor.

Then at the nursery.

Then finally at me.

“The person who was supposed to protect her.”

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the truth became even darker.

Victor wasn’t the only one hiding something.

And Isabella’s final warning was not about one person.

May you like

It was about a chain of people.

A chain that led all the way back to the day she died.
