Chapter 7 - The Visitor Who Carried My Wife’s Final Secret

The man standing outside my gate looked exactly like someone who had nothing to fear.

That bothered me.

People who wanted something usually showed it.

They paced.

They threatened.

They demanded.

But Marcus Vale simply stood there beneath the gray morning sky, hands in his coat pockets, staring directly into the security camera as if he had been invited.

As if he belonged there.

As if my home was not a fortress built to keep people like him away.

I looked at the monitor.

The security feed showed every detail.

His dark coat.

His calm expression.

The slight movement of his eyes as he looked around the property.

He wasn’t studying the house.

He was remembering it.

And that realization made my stomach tighten.

“How long has he been there?”

Elise whispered.

I looked at her.

“You know him.”

She shook her head quickly.

“No.”

Too fast.

I stepped closer.

“Elise.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I know of him.”

“That’s not the same answer.”

She looked at the screen again.

“Isabella told me stories.”

“Stories?”

Elise nodded.

“Not many.”

“What kind of stories?”

She hesitated.

“The kind where someone helps you when you have nowhere else to go.”

I looked back at Marcus.

The man who had somehow existed in my wife’s life without me knowing.

The man who saved her.

The man she feared.

The man who was now standing outside my house.

“Open the gate.”

Elise immediately turned toward me.

“No.”

The answer came so quickly that even I was surprised.

I looked at her.

“You just told me my wife said not to open the door.”

“Yes.”

“And now you’re telling me not to meet him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her voice became quiet.

“Because Isabella wasn’t afraid of him hurting her.”

That stopped me.

I stared at her.

“She was afraid of what he would do if he thought he was helping.”

The words settled heavily.

Marcus Vale.

A man who believed he was protecting people.

A man who saved my wife.

A man who crossed boundaries.

That was more dangerous than someone who simply wanted revenge.

Because people who believed they were heroes rarely questioned themselves.

I turned toward the security panel.

“Bring him to the entrance.”

Elise stepped forward.

“Mr. Caruso—”

“I need answers.”

“You might not like them.”

I looked at her.

“I stopped expecting answers I liked the moment my wife died.”

That silenced her.

I gave the command.

The front gate opened.

Marcus waited.

He didn’t react.

No surprise.

No hesitation.

He simply walked toward the house.

The confidence irritated me.

My security team surrounded the entrance before he reached the door.

Victor stood beside me.

“If you want him removed, say the word.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

Marcus reached the front steps.

Then he stopped.

His eyes moved past me.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the nursery.

Toward my daughters.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Pain.

Real pain.

And that confused me.

Because villains didn’t look at children like that.

They looked at them like obstacles.

Marcus looked at them like memories.

“Daniel Caruso.”

His voice was calm.

I stepped forward.

“You know my name.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I knew your name before Isabella ever married you.”

My jaw tightened.

“Careful.”

He looked at me.

“You think I’m your enemy.”

“Are you?”

A long silence.

Then he answered:

“I don’t know anymore.”

That response surprised me.

For the first time, Marcus didn’t look like someone in control.

He looked tired.

Broken.

Like someone who had carried a secret too long.

“You sent me messages.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my family.”

“No.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You called my phone and played a recording of my daughter crying.”

His expression changed.

“That was not a threat.”

“Then what was it?”

“A warning.”

I stepped closer.

“About what?”

Marcus looked at Elise.

Then back at me.

“About the people who have been watching this house.”

The room went silent.

Victor immediately became alert.

“What people?”

Marcus reached into his coat slowly.

My security team reacted instantly.

But Marcus stopped.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

He removed a small envelope.

And placed it on the table near the entrance.

“This belonged to Isabella.”

I didn’t move.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

His answer surprised me.

“I expect you to verify it.”

I looked at the envelope.

There was something familiar about it.

The same handwriting.

The same style.

My heart started racing.

I picked it up.

On the front was one word.

Daniel.

My fingers tightened.

“How did you get this?”

Marcus looked away.

“Your wife gave it to me.”

The room froze.

“You saw her?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Three days before she entered the hospital.”

My breathing stopped.

The same day Elise mentioned.

“You were with her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because she discovered something.”

“What?”

He looked directly at me.

“Someone inside your company was stealing from you.”

The statement hit me.

I almost laughed.

“Is this a joke?”

“No.”

“My company has audits.”

“Your audits were manipulated.”

My expression changed.

Because that was not impossible.

It was unlikely.

But not impossible.

Marcus continued.

“Isabella found financial records that didn’t make sense.”

I looked at the envelope.

“She investigated?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus’s face became serious.

“Because she believed someone close to you was involved.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

Someone close.

Someone I trusted.

Someone inside my world.

I looked at Victor.

He immediately understood.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“I would never.”

“I know,” I said.

But the damage was done.

Because suspicion was already spreading.

Marcus watched me carefully.

“Isabella was trying to protect you.”

“She could have told me.”

“She knew you would confront them.”

“Yes.”

“And whoever was responsible would know she found out.”

I became quiet.

Because again...

He was right.

I would have gone after them.

Immediately.

Without thinking.

Marcus continued.

“She was afraid that if they knew she discovered the truth, they would come after your family.”

I looked toward the nursery.

My daughters.

The reason Isabella had sacrificed everything.

“What exactly did she find?”

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“That letter will explain some of it.”

“Some?”

He nodded.

“There are things even I don’t know.”

That surprised me.

“You’re saying Isabella trusted you but didn’t tell you everything?”

Marcus gave a sad smile.

“She was smarter than both of us.”

For some reason, that sounded exactly like Isabella.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was another letter.

But before I could read it, my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“Don’t trust the man at your door.”

I looked at Marcus.

Then the message.

Then Elise.

Because suddenly I realized something.

Someone else was watching.

Someone who knew Marcus was here.

Someone who knew I was receiving information.

Someone who wanted me afraid.

Marcus saw my expression.

“What happened?”

I showed him the phone.

For the first time...

Marcus looked genuinely worried.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?”

His voice became lower.

“Because the only people who knew Isabella kept that letter…”

A pause.

“Are standing in this room.”

The air disappeared.

I looked around.

Me.

Elise.

Victor.

Marcus.

Four people.

One secret.

And somewhere outside...

Someone knew everything.

Then the nursery monitor suddenly activated.

Static filled the screen.

A shadow appeared.

Someone was standing inside the nursery.

My heart stopped.

Because nobody had entered.

Nobody except...

The camera turned.

The screen showed my daughters sleeping peacefully.

Then a small red light appeared.

Blinking.

Once.

Twice.

A hidden recording device.

Marcus stared at it.

Elise covered her mouth.

And Victor immediately reached for his weapon.

Because we all understood the same terrifying truth.

Someone had been inside my house.

Someone had been listening.

May you like

Someone had been watching my family.

And they had been there long before Marcus Vale came back.
