Chapter 6 - The Man Behind My Wife’s Death

The phone kept ringing.
Emily Carter.
Her name was glowing on my screen.
My wife.
The woman I had buried.
The woman whose hand I had held inside a coffin.
The woman everyone told me was gone.
I stared at the phone.
Alex stared at me.
Neither of us moved.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?”
For three seconds, there was only silence.
Then I heard breathing.
A familiar breathing pattern.
Something I had heard every night for eleven years.
“Daniel.”
My knees almost gave out.
Because it was her.
Not a recording.
Not a message.
Not someone pretending.
Emily.
“Where are you?” I whispered.
A pause.
Then:
“I can’t tell you.”
My eyes filled with anger.
“Emily, I watched them bury you.”
“I know.”
“Your family told me you were dead.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe that.”
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
I looked at Alex.
He was staring at me like he had seen a ghost.
Maybe he had.
Because I had too.
“Why?” I asked.
The question came out weaker than I wanted.
“Why did you leave me?”
Silence.
Then Emily whispered:
“Because staying would have gotten you killed.”
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
“Daniel, listen to me carefully.”
Her voice became urgent.
“Richard knows you found the files.”
I looked around.
The empty parking lot suddenly felt exposed.
“He knows?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Another pause.
Then:
“Because he was the one who gave me the files.”
I froze.
“What?”
Alex looked at me.
I put the phone on speaker.
Emily continued.
“Richard didn’t start this.”
Alex shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Emily heard him.
“Alex.”
His face changed.
“You’re alive.”
“I’m sorry.”
For the first time, Alex looked like he was about to cry.
Not because he was happy.
Because he was carrying guilt.
“You knew.”
Emily didn’t answer.
“You knew all this time.”
“I knew enough.”
Alex stepped away.
“You let Daniel hate me.”
“I needed him to distrust everyone.”
I felt something break inside me.
“Everyone?”
Emily went silent.
“Yes.”
“Even me?”
The question hurt more than I expected.
There was a long pause.
Then she said:
“No.”
I closed my eyes.
“Then why did you make me think I betrayed you?”
Her voice became softer.
“Because someone was watching you.”
I looked at Alex.
“Who?”
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was barely a whisper.
“Your commanding officer.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
“Daniel, the accident wasn’t about my family.”
I felt my grip tighten around the phone.
“It was about you.”
I couldn’t speak.
The world around me disappeared.
All those years.
All those missions.
All those classified operations.
Emily knew something.
Something about my past.
“Tell me.”
“Not over the phone.”
“Emily.”
“Daniel, if Richard knows I contacted you, he’ll come after both of us.”
“Where are you?”
Another pause.
Then:
“I’ll send you a location.”
The call ended.
I stood there.
Frozen.
Alex finally spoke.
“She’s alive.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He sat down on the hood of the car.
His hands covered his face.
“I spent six years thinking she was dead.”
I looked at him.
“You knew she disappeared?”
He nodded.
“After the accident, I found her car.”
“And?”
“She was gone.”
My expression changed.
“You never told anyone?”
“No.”
“Why?”
His eyes lifted.
“Because I found Richard there.”
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“What?”
“He wasn’t supposed to be there.”
“When?”
“The night Emily disappeared.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Richard had something against me.”
“What?”
Alex looked away.
“He had proof that I had helped Emily.”
I understood.
He wasn’t protecting Richard.
He was trapped.
A message arrived.
Emily.
A location.
And one sentence.
“Come alone.”
Alex read it.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I have to.”
“It’s a trap.”
“Maybe.”
“Daniel.”
I looked at him.
“My wife is alive.”
My voice became harder.
“I spent six days standing beside her grave.”
I put the phone away.
“I’m not losing her again.”
The location was an old military base.
The same place where Emily and I met.
The same place where my life changed.
I drove there alone.
Alex followed from a distance.
He knew I would not listen.
The base had been abandoned for years.
The buildings were empty.
The training fields were overgrown.
But someone had been there recently.
A single light was on inside the old command building.
I entered.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“Emily?”
No answer.
I walked through the hallway.
Every step brought back memories.
My first day there.
My first conversation with Emily.
The night she told me she loved me.
The night I promised I would always protect her.
Then I saw it.
A door at the end of the hallway.
Open slightly.
Light coming from inside.
I pushed it open.
And stopped.
Emily was there.
Alive.
Standing in front of me.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then she ran.
I caught her.
And for the first time in days, I knew something was real.
Her heartbeat.
Her tears.
Her hands holding onto me.
“You’re alive.”
She cried.
“I’m sorry.”
I held her tighter.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I did.”
“Then why?”
She pulled away.
Her face was different.
Older.
Tired.
Like she had spent years running.
“Because I found out something about you.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
Emily looked at the floor.
“Something you don’t remember.”
I felt confused.
“What are you talking about?”
She walked to a table.
There was a folder sitting there.
She opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Military reports.
I picked one up.
My name was on it.
Daniel Carter.
But the date was from twelve years ago.
Before I met Emily.
Before our marriage.
Before everything.
“What is this?”
Emily looked at me.
“The reason Richard wanted you close.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She handed me another document.
It was a classified report.
At the top was a title.
“Operation Black Hollow.”
My hands went cold.
Because I knew that name.
It was the mission that ended my military career.
The mission nobody was allowed to discuss.
The mission where three soldiers disappeared.
The mission I remembered differently.
Emily whispered:
“Daniel, you didn’t leave the military because you were injured.”
I looked at her.
“Then why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because you discovered who was selling information.”
I stopped breathing.
“Who?”
Before she could answer, the lights inside the building went out.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Someone followed you.”
I heard footsteps outside.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Alex’s voice suddenly came through the darkness.
“Daniel!”
Then a gunshot exploded through the hallway.
Emily pulled me down.
Someone shouted from outside.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that had been hiding behind every lie.
“Emily.”
The footsteps stopped.
Then the door opened.
May you like
And standing there was the one person who knew the entire truth.
My former commander.
