Chapter 5 - The Night Everything Fell Apart

The door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Someone was outside the hidden room.

I looked at Alex.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

We both understood the same thing.

Whoever was standing outside had followed us.

They knew about the room.

They knew about the files.

And they knew we had found the truth.

I closed the laptop.

Alex grabbed my arm.

“Wait.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His eyes moved toward the door.

“Listen.”

I stayed silent.

At first, I heard nothing.

Then I noticed it.

Footsteps.

Not one person.

Two.

My military instincts took over.

I turned off my flashlight.

The room went completely dark.

Alex whispered:

“There’s another way out.”

I looked at him.

“You knew about this room?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

He pointed toward the wall.

“There.”

Behind an old metal shelf was a small opening.

A hidden passage.

Emily had found this place.

Not us.

She had left a way out.

I pushed the shelf aside.

The opening was narrow.

Barely enough space for one person.

The footsteps outside got closer.

The door handle moved again.

This time harder.

Someone was forcing it.

I looked at the laptop.

The files.

The evidence.

Everything Emily had risked her life to hide.

I grabbed it.

Alex followed.

We entered the passage just as the door behind us opened.

I heard a voice.

A familiar voice.

“Daniel.”

Richard.

Again.

Always Richard.

But this time, his voice was different.

No pretending.

No fake concern.

No father-in-law trying to comfort a grieving man.

Only anger.

“Come out.”

I kept moving.

The passage was dark.

The walls were covered in dust.

Every step echoed.

Alex whispered:

“He knows.”

I looked back.

“He knows what?”

“That Emily recorded him.”

My chest tightened.

“How?”

Alex looked away.

“Because he was there.”

I stopped.

“What?”

Alex froze.

Then he realized what he had said.

I grabbed his shoulder.

“What do you mean he was there?”

His face changed.

“I didn’t tell you everything.”

I felt my anger rising.

“Of course you didn’t.”

“Daniel—”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“My wife died. My family lied. Her family lied. Everyone kept secrets.”

I stepped closer.

“And now you’re telling me you still have more?”

Alex looked broken.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Everyone says that.”

I turned away.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.”

We kept walking.

After a few minutes, the passage opened into a small storage room behind the warehouse.

We climbed out.

The night air hit my face.

For the first time in hours, I could breathe.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

“Who is this?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

My heart stopped.

“Daniel?”

I almost dropped the phone.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it better than my own.

“Emily?”

Alex looked at me.

The call continued.

“Don’t trust Alex.”

I couldn’t move.

“What?”

The voice trembled.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

I closed my eyes.

This couldn’t be real.

It wasn’t possible.

Emily was dead.

But her voice was there.

“Where are you?”

No answer.

“Emily?”

The line became filled with static.

Then she whispered:

“He knows.”

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Alex stared at me.

“What happened?”

I looked at him.

“My wife called me.”

His face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.”

I wanted to believe him.

But I had learned one thing.

Impossible things happened when people were hiding the truth.

We returned to the car.

Neither of us spoke.

My mind was breaking apart.

Emily’s recording.

Richard’s voice.

The fake recording of me.

And now a phone call from my dead wife.

Nothing made sense.

Until Alex said:

“There is one person who can explain.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

He stared through the windshield.

“The person who helped Emily disappear.”

My blood went cold.

“What did you say?”

Alex closed his eyes.

“Emily wasn’t supposed to die that night.”

I turned toward him.

“Explain.”

He looked at me.

“She had a plan.”

“A plan for what?”

“To expose Richard.”

I waited.

“But someone betrayed her.”

“Who?”

Alex didn’t answer.

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

Opened an old message.

And showed me the screen.

It was from Emily.

Sent three days before her death.

The message said:

“I know who betrayed me.”

Below it was a picture.

A person standing beside Emily.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I trusted.

My own hands started shaking.

Because the person in the picture was me.

Alex watched my reaction.

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t speak.

The picture showed me standing outside Carter Holdings.

But I had never been there.

Not that day.

Not ever.

Someone had edited the image.

Someone had built a story where I was part of the betrayal.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another unknown message.

This time there was no picture.

Only words.

“Now you understand why Emily couldn’t trust you.”

I stared at the message.

Then another line appeared.

“Come alone if you want to know who killed your wife.”

A location followed.

My old military base.

The place where Emily and I first met.

Alex grabbed my arm.

“Don’t go.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His face was filled with fear.

“Because whoever sent that message knows something.”

“What?”

He swallowed.

“They know the one thing Emily never told anyone.”

I waited.

Alex whispered:

“The real reason she married you.”

My phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID appeared.

And I froze.

May you like

Because the name on the screen was one I had not seen in eleven years.

Emily Carter.
