Chapter 3 - The Family That Lied To My Face

“Daniel.”

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at my wedding.

I had heard it at family dinners.

I had heard it when Emily introduced me as the man she planned to spend the rest of her life with.

Richard Carter.

My father-in-law.

The man who had stood beside my wife’s coffin.

The man who had begged me to hand over the memory card.

The man who was now standing inside Claire’s house in the middle of the night.

The lights were still out.

The hallway was dark.

But I could see his silhouette.

Alex stood beside me, frozen.

That told me everything.

He wasn’t surprised that Richard was here.

He was afraid.

“Daniel,” Richard said again.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“What are you doing here?”

I stepped forward.

Richard looked past me.

His eyes went directly to Alex.

And for the first time, I saw hatred.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Hatred.

“You shouldn’t have come back,” Richard said.

Alex didn’t move.

“I had to.”

Richard shook his head.

“No. You wanted revenge.”

The word hung in the air.

Revenge.

I looked between them.

“What is he talking about?”

Neither answered.

That was the moment I realized something.

This family had been carrying a secret for years.

And Emily had been trapped in the middle of it.

Richard took one step closer.

“Daniel, you need to leave.”

I almost laughed.

“Leave?”

I held up the envelope Emily had written.

“My wife left me a message saying her death was planned.”

Richard’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

He knew exactly what was inside.

“You read it.”

It wasn’t a question.

I stared at him.

“You knew.”

Richard looked away.

“I knew Emily was asking dangerous questions.”

My chest tightened.

“Dangerous questions about what?”

Silence.

Then Alex spoke.

“About the company.”

I turned toward him.

“What company?”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Alex.”

But Alex continued.

“Tell him.”

The room became still.

“Tell him what Emily found.”

Richard looked at his son.

Something passed between them.

Years of anger.

Years of pain.

Years of things never said.

Then Richard looked at me.

“Your wife was investigating Carter Holdings.”

I frowned.

“Her family’s company?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Alex said:

“Because she found out money was disappearing.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Millions.”

My mind struggled to process it.

Emily had never mentioned anything.

Not once.

Richard stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Alex laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly what you said eight years ago.”

I looked at Alex.

“What happened eight years ago?”

His face changed.

For the first time, the anger disappeared.

Only pain remained.

“I found out my father was moving money through fake accounts.”

Richard’s voice became louder.

“Enough.”

“No.”

Alex looked at me.

“I confronted him.”

“And?”

“He destroyed my reputation.”

The room felt smaller.

“He told everyone I stole from the company.”

I looked at Richard.

“Is that true?”

Richard didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I had seen guilty men before.

They always searched for the perfect words.

Innocent people usually answered immediately.

Richard walked toward me.

“Daniel, you don’t understand what happened.”

“Then explain.”

“It was complicated.”

“People always say that when the truth is simple.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re making a mistake.”

I pulled the memory card from my pocket.

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“I made one mistake already.”

Richard waited.

“I trusted everyone who told me Emily’s death was an accident.”

Nobody spoke.

The silence was broken by Alex.

“Play the video.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The memory card.”

I hesitated.

Alex stepped closer.

“She didn’t hide it for you to find later.”

His voice lowered.

“She hid it because she knew someone would try to stop you.”

I looked around the room.

At the people who had lied to me.

At the family who knew my wife was afraid.

At the people who watched me bury her without telling me why.

Then I opened my laptop.

The screen lit up the dark room.

The same video appeared.

Emily.

Our kitchen.

Her tired eyes.

Her trembling hands.

I pressed play.

“Daniel,” Emily said.

My heart broke hearing her voice.

“If you’re watching this, I need you to understand something.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought you would try to protect me.”

I swallowed.

That sounded exactly like her.

She always thought about everyone else before herself.

“I knew you would confront them.”

A pause.

“And I knew they would hurt you.”

Richard looked away.

Alex stared at the screen.

Emily continued.

“I found documents proving someone inside my family has been stealing from Carter Holdings for years.”

My eyes moved toward Richard.

He remained silent.

“I also found something else.”

Emily looked nervous.

Something behind the camera made her stop.

Then she whispered:

“They weren’t just stealing money.”

The video glitched.

Her face froze.

Then came back.

“They were covering something up.”

I leaned closer.

“What were you covering up?”

Emily looked down.

“I found records connected to the night Alex disappeared.”

Alex went completely still.

The video ended.

The room exploded with silence.

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?”

Alex looked like he had just been hit.

“He knew.”

Richard looked at his son.

“Stop.”

Alex’s voice shook.

“He knew I found the files.”

“What files?”

Alex looked at me.

“The files about Emily’s accident.”

My stomach dropped.

“You mean…”

“Yes.”

He nodded slowly.

“The accident that killed your wife.”

The room went silent.

I stood there trying to understand.

My wife.

My family.

Her family.

All connected to the same secret.

Then my phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

A picture loaded.

My hands went cold.

It was Emily.

Not from the funeral.

Not from the video.

A recent picture.

She was standing in a parking garage.

And behind her was someone I recognized.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Alex looked at my face.

“What is it?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because beneath the picture was one sentence.

“Ask your brother why Emily trusted him more than you.”

The room went silent.

Then another message appeared.

A location.

And a time.

Tonight.

I looked up at Alex.

Because I suddenly understood.

The person who sent the message wasn’t trying to scare me.

They wanted me to find something.

I walked toward the door.

Alex grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, don’t go there.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His face turned pale.

“Because that place is where Emily died.”

I pulled my arm free.

Then I opened the message again.

The location was familiar.

Too familiar.

It was the abandoned warehouse where my wife’s accident had happened.

May you like

And the last thing written beneath the address was a name.

Emily’s.
