Chapter 2 - The File She Never Wanted Me To Find

I stood outside Claire’s house with my phone still in my hand.

The picture was still open.

Richard Carter.

My father-in-law.

Standing outside Claire’s front door.

The same man who had begged me to forget the memory card.

The same man who had looked terrified when he saw it in my hand.

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked at the house.

The lights were on.

The front door was closed.

Everything looked normal.

But I knew better.

Nothing about this was normal anymore.

I moved toward the entrance.

Slowly.

Quietly.

The same way I had moved through enemy territory years earlier.

My hand rested near my jacket pocket.

Not because I expected a fight.

Because I expected a lie.

I knocked.

No answer.

I knocked again.

“Claire?”

Silence.

I looked through the window beside the door.

The living room light was on.

A coffee cup sat on the table.

Her phone was lying on the couch.

But Claire was gone.

I tried the handle.

Locked.

I stepped back.

Something was wrong.

Claire would never leave her phone behind.

Not after calling me.

Not after saying my wife’s death wasn’t an accident.

I pulled out my phone and called her again.

The ringing came from inside the house.

I heard it.

A few seconds later, the call went to voicemail.

My stomach tightened.

She was inside.

I looked around the property.

A small gate stood on the side of the house.

It was slightly open.

I walked around.

The backyard was empty.

Except for one thing.

A broken flower pot lying near the fence.

The soil was scattered across the ground.

Someone had forced their way through.

I moved closer.

There was something buried beneath the dirt.

A small silver bracelet.

I recognized it immediately.

Emily had one exactly like it.

I picked it up.

My fingers started shaking.

It wasn’t Emily’s bracelet.

It was Claire’s.

And there was something engraved on the inside.

A date.

The same date Emily died.

I looked back at the house.

Then I heard a sound.

A soft movement.

Inside.

Someone was upstairs.

I walked back to the front door.

This time, I didn’t knock.

I forced it open.

“Claire?”

No response.

The house felt colder than before.

I entered carefully.

The first thing I noticed was the silence.

Too much silence.

A normal home had sounds.

A refrigerator running.

A clock ticking.

A floor creaking.

This house felt abandoned.

I walked into the living room.

Claire’s phone was still there.

I picked it up.

The last call was mine.

But there was another notification.

A message.

From Emily.

My heart stopped.

Emily had been dead for six days.

The message had been sent yesterday.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

“Claire, if anything happens to me, give Daniel the second key.”

Second key?

I searched the room.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something on the bookshelf.

A small wooden box.

I opened it.

Inside was an old key.

And beneath it was a photograph.

Emily.

Claire.

And another person.

A man.

Someone I had never seen before.

I turned the photo over.

There was writing on the back.

“April 14. The night everything changed.”

I checked the date.

It was three months before Emily died.

I put the photo into my pocket.

Then I heard footsteps.

Upstairs.

Someone was walking.

I moved toward the stairs.

“Claire?”

A voice answered.

But it wasn’t Claire.

“Daniel.”

I stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone I never expected to hear.

My brother.

Alex Carter.

I had not seen Alex in eight years.

Not since the night he disappeared after a fight with Richard.

The man everyone said had left the family.

The man everyone told Emily never to contact again.

He stood at the top of the stairs.

His face was older.

Tired.

Different.

But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes Emily had described in the last message she ever sent me.

The eyes of someone who knew the truth.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

Alex looked at the key in my hand.

Then at the photograph in my pocket.

“You found it.”

My voice hardened.

“Found what?”

He walked down slowly.

“You don’t have much time.”

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Where is Claire?”

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

“Claire tried to stop him.”

“Stop who?”

Alex didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the front door.

Like he expected someone to arrive.

“Emily knew this would happen.”

My chest tightened.

“You knew Emily was investigating something?”

Alex looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

His face showed guilt.

“Because Emily made me promise.”

I stepped closer.

“She trusted you?”

“She trusted very few people.”

That hurt more than I expected.

Because I was supposed to be the person she trusted most.

Alex reached into his jacket.

I immediately moved back.

But he pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

An envelope.

My name was written on it.

Daniel Carter.

My hands went cold.

“Emily gave this to me two days before she died.”

I grabbed it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

I looked at him.

“From my own family?”

Alex didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Emily’s handwriting.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, I failed.

I stopped.

The room became silent.

I read the next line.

But I couldn’t understand it.

Not at first.

Because it was impossible.

Because Emily had written:

“The accident was planned.”

I looked at Alex.

“What does this mean?”

He looked down.

“Your wife found evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

“Of what they did.”

“Who?”

Alex looked toward the window.

His voice dropped.

“The people who were supposed to protect her.”

Before I could ask another question, the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

My military training took over.

I grabbed Alex and pulled him against the wall.

A second later, glass shattered downstairs.

Someone had entered.

I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not someone breaking in randomly.

Someone who knew exactly where they were going.

Alex whispered:

“He found us.”

I held my breath.

“Who?”

A shadow moved across the hallway.

Then a familiar voice came from downstairs.

“Daniel.”

My blood froze.

May you like

Because the person calling my name was standing inside the house.

And he was the last person I expected to find there.
