Chapter 4 - The Voice Hidden In The Recording

I stared at the address on my phone.

The abandoned warehouse.

The same place where everyone told me Emily had died.

The same place where I had spent six days believing my wife’s final moments were nothing more than a tragic accident.

Now someone was telling me the truth was buried there.

And they were using Emily’s name to bring me back.

“Daniel.”

Alex’s voice pulled me away from the screen.

“Don’t go alone.”

I looked at him.

“You expect me to trust you?”

His expression changed.

I saw the pain in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not offense.

Pain.

“No.”

He looked down.

“I expect you to trust Emily.”

That stopped me.

Because he was right.

I didn’t know Alex.

Not anymore.

I didn’t know Richard.

I didn’t know anyone in this family.

But I knew Emily.

And Emily had left a trail for me to follow.

A trail she knew would lead me somewhere dangerous.

I grabbed my jacket.

“We’re going.”

Alex nodded.

But before we left, I looked back at Claire’s house.

She was still missing.

Someone had taken her.

And I knew whoever did it wasn’t finished.

The drive to the warehouse was silent.

Alex sat in the passenger seat.

He kept looking out the window.

Like he was watching memories pass by.

Finally, I broke the silence.

“Tell me everything.”

He didn’t answer.

“Alex.”

He sighed.

“I wish I could.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He looked at me.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then understand this.”

His voice became serious.

“Your wife was smarter than everyone thought.”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Keep going.”

“She knew something was wrong with Carter Holdings months before she died.”

“How?”

“Because she found payments.”

“Fake payments?”

“Yes.”

“To who?”

Alex looked away.

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“The money wasn’t going outside the company.”

I frowned.

“Then where was it going?”

Alex was quiet.

Then he said:

“Back into the family.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone was stealing money and making it look like business expenses.”

“Who?”

Alex looked at me.

“Emily never found out.”

I slowed the car.

“But she was close.”

“Yes.”

“How close?”

He hesitated.

“Close enough that someone tried to kill her.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

I had heard people say it before.

But hearing Alex say it made it real.

Someone tried to kill my wife.

And they almost succeeded.

The warehouse appeared in the distance.

An old building surrounded by empty land.

No lights.

No cars.

Nothing.

Exactly like a place where someone would hide a secret.

I parked outside.

Neither of us moved.

Then Alex whispered:

“This is where I saw her last.”

I turned.

“What?”

“Emily.”

My chest tightened.

“You were here with her?”

He nodded slowly.

“Two nights before the accident.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Emily told me not to.”

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because everything was becoming impossible.

“Everyone keeps saying Emily told them things.”

I opened the door.

“And somehow nobody thought I deserved to know.”

We walked inside.

The warehouse smelled like dust and old metal.

My flashlight moved across broken equipment.

Empty shelves.

Pieces of forgotten machinery.

But nothing else.

Then Alex stopped.

“She was here.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

He pointed.

On the floor was a small mark.

A scratch.

Almost invisible.

But I recognized it.

Emily’s necklace had a small silver charm.

A tiny star.

She always wore it.

The charm had been found missing after the accident.

I stepped closer.

The scratch was shaped like a star.

Someone had dragged something across the floor.

Something heavy.

Something with metal.

I looked at Alex.

“Where did they find Emily?”

He swallowed.

“Near the back entrance.”

We moved deeper into the building.

Every step felt heavier.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

“Stop looking.”

A second message appeared.

“You already know enough.”

Then a third.

“Your wife didn’t.”

I stared at the screen.

Alex saw my face.

“What did they say?”

I showed him.

His expression changed.

“They’re watching us.”

I looked around.

The warehouse was empty.

But suddenly it didn’t feel empty anymore.

I moved toward the back entrance.

That was when I saw it.

A small metal door.

Hidden behind stacked boxes.

It looked like nobody had touched it in years.

Except for one thing.

The lock was new.

I walked closer.

Alex whispered:

“Daniel.”

I ignored him.

I pulled out the key from the envelope.

The second key.

The one Emily wanted me to find.

It fit.

The lock opened.

Inside was a small room.

No windows.

No furniture.

Only one table.

And a laptop sitting on top.

My heart started racing.

Because the laptop was open.

Someone had been using it recently.

I walked inside.

The screen showed one folder.

The name made me freeze.

Emily.

I clicked it.

There were dozens of files.

Documents.

Pictures.

Videos.

And one audio recording.

Created the day before she died.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Emily’s voice.

Quiet.

Scared.

“Daniel, if you found this, please don’t trust anyone who tells you I was careless.”

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“I wasn’t in an accident.”

Alex closed his eyes.

Like he had been waiting years to hear those words.

Emily’s voice shook.

“I need you to know something.”

A pause.

“I found out who was involved.”

The recording became distorted.

Then another voice appeared.

A man.

Not Emily.

I looked at Alex.

He looked back at me.

Because we both recognized it.

Richard.

My father-in-law.

His voice came through the speakers.

“You should have left this alone.”

Emily responded.

“You ruined Alex’s life.”

Richard laughed softly.

“You still think this is about Alex?”

My blood went cold.

The recording continued.

Emily sounded terrified.

“Then tell me what it’s about.”

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“It’s about protecting this family.”

The audio cut.

I hit the table.

“No.”

I played it again.

The same thing happened.

The file ended.

But there was another file underneath.

One I hadn’t noticed.

The title was simple.

“THE REAL RECORDING.”

I clicked it.

The screen went black.

Then a new voice appeared.

Not Emily.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

A voice I recognized instantly.

My own voice.

The recording played.

And I heard myself saying:

“Emily, if you find anything about my family, you need to destroy it.”

I froze.

Because I had never said those words.

Alex stepped back.

“Daniel…”

The audio continued.

Then came the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Because if they know you found out, they will kill you too.”

I stared at the screen.

Someone had created a recording using my voice.

Someone had been planning this.

Someone wanted Emily to look like she was hiding things from me.

Then the laptop received a notification.

A new file appeared.

Created just seconds ago.

The file name was:

“WATCH WHO ENTERS.”

I looked toward the locked door behind us.

Because the handle had just started moving.

May you like

Someone was outside.

And they were trying to get in.
