Chapter 6 - What Noah Saw That Morning

Damian returned home with one question consuming him.

Who was Grace?

For fifteen years she had managed his house.

She had organized his wedding.

Held Noah hours after his birth.

Comforted Damian at Rebecca’s funeral.

And now she had disappeared.

Vincent was found conscious.

Barely.

“I didn’t shoot Maddox,” he said.

“Then why run?”

“Grace told me someone was going after Noah.”

Damian stared at him.

“You expect me to believe you?”

Vincent pulled up his sleeve.

A deep cut crossed his arm.

“She attacked me.”

“Why?”

“Because I recognized her.”

Vincent explained that before working for Damian, he had served as a private investigator.

Years earlier, he had investigated missing medical records at St. Catherine’s.

One physician vanished during the investigation.

Dr. Grace Callahan.

Grace Whitmore.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I wasn’t certain.”

Damian grabbed him.

“My wife died.”

“I know.”

“My son stopped speaking.”

“I know.”

“And you protected a suspicion?”

Vincent did not defend himself.

Noah entered.

He looked at Vincent.

Then signed.

Elena watched.

“What?”

“He says Vincent helped Mommy.”

Vincent’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Damian released him.

Rebecca had secretly asked Vincent to investigate.

The morning she died, Vincent had been delayed outside the mansion by a false security alert.

Someone planned it.

Noah began signing again.

Kitchen.

Mom.

Grace.

Cup.

Damian’s face emptied.

“Grace gave Rebecca something?”

Noah nodded.

Elena crouched.

“Did you see her put something in the cup?”

Noah shook his head.

He signed carefully.

Grace brought cup.

Mom drank.

Mom fell.

Grace cried.

Grace called someone.

Man came.

Damian leaned closer.

“What man?”

Noah’s hands stopped.

His breathing changed.

Elena touched his arm.

“You don’t have to tell us.”

Damian almost objected.

Then stopped himself.

Noah looked at his father.

For the first time in months, he voluntarily reached for Damian.

Damian knelt.

Noah put one hand against his father’s cheek.

Then whispered:

“Daddy.”

Damian broke.

There was no dramatic collapse.

Just tears.

Silent and sudden.

He closed his eyes against Noah’s palm.

“I’m here.”

Noah leaned into him.

Elena turned away to give them privacy.

Then Noah spoke again.

“Not Grace.”

Damian looked up.

“What?”

“Not Grace bad.”

Noah pointed toward the kitchen.

“Man.”

“Who?”

Noah’s face twisted.

He whispered:

“Uncle.”

Damian froze.

He had only one brother.

Alexander Mercer.

Dead for nine years.

Or supposedly dead.

Damian stood.

“Vincent.”

Vincent understood immediately.

They searched old security archives.

Eight months earlier.

11:13 a.m.

A service entrance camera captured a man entering Mercer House.

Baseball cap.

Gray coat.

Face partly hidden.

Damian enlarged the image.

His blood ran cold.

Alexander.

His older brother.

The man Damian had buried after a warehouse fire.

Elena stared.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

A second frame showed Alexander leaving seventeen minutes later.

Rebecca collapsed at 11:31.

Noah stood behind the kitchen door.

Watching.

Damian whispered:

“My brother killed my wife.”

Noah shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Noah pointed at the screen.

Then toward the front door.

“He… took…”

His voice failed.

Elena signed.

Noah answered.

She stared at him.

“What?”

Damian demanded.

Elena looked toward the foyer.

“He says Alexander took someone with him.”

“Who?”

Noah pointed toward Captain Buttons.

Inside the bear’s opened seam was another folded scrap nobody had noticed.

Damian removed it.

A child’s hospital bracelet.

The name was faded.

But readable.

LILY HART.

And beneath it, written in Rebecca’s handwriting:

SHE IS ALIVE.
