Chapter 13 - Noah Finally Speaks

Damian became the man Chicago feared again.

For ten minutes.

Then Noah stopped him.

“Daddy.”

Damian turned.

Noah stood in the office doorway.

“You’re angry.”

“Yes.”

“You get scary when you’re angry.”

The words struck him.

Damian lowered his weapon.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah approached.

“Elena says scary doesn’t make safe.”

Damian almost smiled.

“She says a lot of inconvenient things.”

Noah nodded solemnly.

“Yes.”

Then he pointed at Captain Buttons.

“Look.”

Inside the bear’s paw was a tracking tag Elena had sewn there.

Damian laughed in disbelief.

Of course.

She had prepared for danger.

The signal led to an abandoned freight terminal.

Damian called law enforcement instead of launching an assault himself.

Another choice.

Another step.

Inside the terminal, Elena had already freed herself.

Maddox stood nearby.

He had not kidnapped her.

He had intercepted the vehicle because Weller’s remaining men had compromised her protection detail.

The blood belonged to an attacker.

“Why run?” Damian demanded.

“Because I didn’t know who was clean.”

Maddox handed over the final file.

It contained accounts proving Weller had bribed federal agents.

Elena emerged with Lily.

Damian crossed the distance between them.

Then stopped.

He wanted to grab her.

Instead, he asked:

“Can I?”

Elena understood.

She stepped into his arms.

He held her.

Not as property.

Not as someone he had rescued.

As someone he had been terrified to lose.

Lily ran toward Noah.

The children hugged.

Noah laughed.

The sound filled the warehouse.

Everyone turned.

Noah looked embarrassed.

Then laughed again.

Damian covered his mouth.

Elena watched him.

Eight months of silence had ended not with a miraculous sentence, but with trust returning one piece at a time.

Noah walked toward his father.

“I want to go home.”

Damian knelt.

“We will.”

Noah glanced at Elena.

“All of us?”

Silence.

Damian looked at her.

He did not answer for her.

Elena noticed.

“I think,” she said, “we can all go home tonight.”

Noah smiled.

But before they left, Maddox handed Damian one final document.

“What is this?”

“Rebecca’s estate amendment.”

Damian read it.

His expression changed.

Rebecca had transferred control of her medical foundation before her death.

Not to Damian.

Not to Noah.

To a trust.

The trustee’s name was Elena Hart.

Elena stared.

“I never signed anything.”

“You didn’t need to,” Maddox said. “You were the contingent trustee.”

“Why me?”

Maddox looked at Lily.

“Because Rebecca believed the mother of the child the system failed should decide how to rebuild it.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

Damian turned the page.

There was one additional handwritten instruction.

He read it silently.

Then looked at Elena.

“What?”

He handed her the paper.

Rebecca had written:

Tell Elena the foundation belongs to the children now.

Below it was another sentence.

And tell Damian that if he offers her marriage as payment, I will haunt him.

Elena laughed through her tears.

Damian did too.

Then Noah pointed behind them.

“Daddy?”

A man stood in the warehouse entrance.

May you like

He raised a gun.

And aimed directly at Elena.
