Chapter 10 - The Doctor Who Remembered Lily

Thomas held Noah and Lily inside Rebecca’s old office.
He had a gun.
Damian approached alone.
Elena ignored his order and followed.
Thomas smiled when he saw her.
“The famous maid.”
“Let them go.”
“You ruined a very profitable arrangement.”
Elena stared at him.
“You let children die.”
“I managed scarcity.”
“You sold survival.”
“I sold priority.”
Damian’s voice was ice.
“And Rebecca discovered you.”
“She became sentimental.”
“Did you kill her?”
“No.”
Thomas almost sounded annoyed.
“Her heart did that for me.”
Noah flinched.
Damian saw it.
Thomas noticed.
“You spent millions trying to make that boy talk. Do you know what finally did it?”
He laughed.
“A broke maid.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Noah.”
Thomas pointed the gun at her.
“Stop.”
Elena stopped.
She did not tell Noah to be brave.
She did not tell him everything would be okay.
She simply signed.
Safe.
Noah looked at Damian.
Then Lily.
Then Elena.
He moved his hands.
Together.
Damian understood without translation.
Together.
Thomas backed toward the private elevator.
Lily suddenly bit his wrist.
He shouted.
Noah ducked.
Damian moved.
The gun fired.
Elena screamed.
Damian struck Thomas and drove him into the wall.
Vincent’s team rushed in.
Thomas was arrested.
The bullet had missed everyone.
For a moment nobody moved.
Then Noah ran to Damian.
“Daddy!”
Damian caught him.
Noah sobbed against his chest.
Words poured out.
“Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.”
Damian held him as though the world could never take him away again.
Elena hugged Lily.
The conspiracy collapsed quickly after Thomas’s arrest.
Files from Rebecca’s drive identified hospital administrators, brokers, and wealthy intermediaries.
Federal investigators arrived.
Maddox agreed to testify.
Alexander surrendered voluntarily in exchange for protection and cooperation.
Grace did too.
Elena faced the hardest question.
Why had Lily never been returned?
A surgeon provided the answer.
Dr. Sarah Monroe.
She had operated secretly on Lily.
Complications required years of follow-up treatment.
Then threats intensified.
Every attempt to contact Elena risked exposing the child.
It was not justice.
It was not acceptable.
But Lily was alive.
Elena could decide what forgiveness meant later.
That evening, Lily slept beside her mother for the first time in years.
Noah sat outside the room.
“You like her?” Elena asked.
He nodded.
“She talks a lot.”
Elena laughed softly.
“Yes.”
Noah looked serious.
“You talk quiet.”
“I do.”
“I like quiet.”
“So do I.”
He leaned against her.
Then asked:
“Will you leave?”
Elena’s smile disappeared.
Her employment at Mercer House had become irrelevant.
Her debt remained.
Her apartment remained.
Her life remained.
“I don’t know.”
Noah considered that.
“Daddy sad if you leave.”
Elena looked toward the hallway.
Damian stood there.
He had heard everything.
Noah slipped away.
Damian approached.
“I can erase your debt.”
“No.”
“I expected that.”
“I need to solve my own life.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“Stay anyway.”
“Because Noah needs me?”
Damian looked directly at her.
“No.”
The answer surprised her.
“Then why?”
He stepped closer.
“Because I do.”
Before Elena could respond, Damian’s phone buzzed.
He read the message.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He showed her.
The message came from Rebecca’s old number.
