Chapter 12 - The Man Inside Mercer House

They found Evelyn alive.

A masked man dragged her toward a waiting car.

Damian’s guards stopped him.

The attacker was not the mastermind.

He was a courier.

But his phone contained the name they needed.

Senator Charles Weller.

A celebrated philanthropist.

Chairman of St. Catherine’s charitable board.

For twenty years, Weller had presented himself as a champion for sick children.

Behind closed doors, he controlled the priority network.

Thomas handled money.

Hospital administrators manipulated records.

Weller protected everyone politically.

Rebecca discovered him.

Evelyn confirmed it.

“He threatened Elena.”

“Why didn’t you tell her?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Elena looked at her mother.

For years she had imagined this reunion.

Anger remained.

Love remained too.

Neither canceled the other.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I know.”

“You don’t get thirteen years back.”

“I know.”

“But Lily deserves a grandmother.”

Evelyn cried.

“So we start there.”

Damian watched.

Elena understood something then.

Healing was not forgetting.

It was choosing what happened next.

Weller was arrested forty-eight hours later after Alexander provided financial records and Maddox testified.

The scandal consumed Chicago.

Damian’s criminal empire became part of the investigation too.

Elena confronted him.

“You can’t ask Noah to grow up safe while you keep living like this.”

Damian did not argue.

That surprised her.

“I know.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Change it.”

“You can’t turn your life legitimate overnight.”

“No.”

He looked toward Noah.

“But I can start.”

He cooperated with investigators on businesses connected to Thomas’s network and began separating his legal holdings from everything else.

It cost him money.

Influence.

Allies.

He accepted it.

Then Ray Maddox disappeared from protective custody.

Vincent received the warning.

Maddox had stolen one file before fleeing.

A file containing Elena and Lily’s new protected address.

Damian found Elena packing.

“You’re leaving?”

“I’m taking Lily somewhere safe.”

“You’re safest here.”

“That’s what everyone keeps saying before somebody breaks into this house.”

Fair point.

“Then I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Elena—”

“I need you to stay with Noah.”

He looked at her.

She touched his hand.

It was the first time she initiated contact.

“He needs his father.”

“And you?”

Her eyes softened.

“I’m learning what I need.”

She left with Lily and federal protection.

Three hours later, Damian received a photograph.

Elena’s protection vehicle sat abandoned beside the highway.

Driver’s door open.

Blood on the pavement.

May you like

Lily’s purple bracelet lay on the ground.

And Captain Buttons was sitting alone on the passenger seat.
