Chapter 11 - A Mother’s Last Recording

The number was impossible.

Rebecca’s phone had been destroyed after her death.

Vincent traced the message.

It originated inside Mercer House.

They followed the signal to the nursery.

Noah watched from the doorway.

He pointed toward the rocking chair.

“Mommy.”

Damian searched it.

Nothing.

Elena examined Captain Buttons.

The bear had carried one key already.

Rebecca liked hiding truth inside ordinary things.

Elena looked beneath the rocking chair.

A tiny recorder was taped underneath.

Damian pressed play.

Rebecca’s voice filled the room.

“Damian, if you found this, Noah is probably with you.”

Noah took his father’s hand.

“I need you to understand something,” Rebecca continued. “Our son did not lose his voice because he was weak. He stopped speaking because everyone around him stopped listening.”

Damian closed his eyes.

Rebecca described Thomas’s network.

Grace’s role.

Alexander’s disappearance.

Lily’s rescue.

Then her voice softened.

“And Elena Hart.”

Elena froze.

“I never met Elena. But I knew her daughter. Lily was brave. Her mother fought harder for her than anyone understood.”

Elena began crying.

Rebecca had known.

She had tried to save Lily.

“I asked Grace to find Elena if anything happened to me. If she reaches Noah, trust her.”

Damian looked at Elena.

Rebecca continued.

“And Damian—do not marry someone because of a promise made in desperation.”

Despite everything, Elena almost laughed.

“Rebecca knew you,” she whispered.

Damian nodded.

The recording continued.

“If you ever marry again, marry because you learned the difference between protecting someone and owning them.”

Damian looked down.

That sentence was meant for him.

The recording ended.

No secret fortune.

No final villain.

Just truth.

Then another voice appeared.

Thomas.

Recorded accidentally after Rebecca had left the device running.

“You should have taken the deal, Rebecca.”

Rebecca answered.

“Children aren’t inventory.”

“You’ll destroy Damian.”

“No. You will.”

A third voice interrupted.

Someone they had not identified.

A woman.

“Thomas, enough.”

Elena’s head snapped up.

She knew that voice.

Her mother.

Evelyn.

Damian immediately called her.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

They drove to the clinic.

Empty.

A chair had been overturned.

Blood marked the floor.

Elena found her mother’s phone.

One unfinished message remained on-screen.

ELENA, THOMAS WAS NEVER IN CHARGE. THE PERSON ABOVE HIM IS—

The message ended there.

Then the clinic’s rear door clicked.

May you like

Someone was unlocking it from outside.

And Elena heard her mother scream.
