Chapter 14 - The Price of Damian’s Name

Damian moved in front of Elena.

The shot never came.

Vincent tackled the gunman.

Federal officers flooded the entrance.

It was over within seconds.

This time, truly over.

The shooter was Weller’s final paid operative.

His arrest completed the chain of evidence.

Within months, indictments spread through the hospital network.

Administrators resigned.

Doctors testified.

Families came forward.

Elena heard stories painfully similar to hers.

Parents who had sold homes.

Parents who had begged.

Parents whose children had been pushed aside because someone richer wanted priority.

Rebecca’s foundation became the center of restitution efforts.

Elena accepted the trusteeship.

But she refused Damian’s fortune.

“You realize half of everything is still technically available,” he teased once.

They stood in the kitchen where Rebecca had died.

It no longer looked like a shrine.

Noah’s drawings covered the refrigerator.

Lily’s backpack lay beneath a chair.

Life had invaded the mausoleum.

“Keep it,” Elena said.

“What about the marriage?”

“Especially keep that.”

He smiled.

Their relationship changed slowly.

Damian went to therapy with Noah.

Then alone.

Elena returned to communication work.

She helped create a trauma-communication program through Rebecca’s foundation.

Grace received probation after cooperating fully with investigators and continued helping the prosecution.

Alexander entered witness protection.

Evelyn moved nearby, not into Elena’s life all at once, but carefully.

Lily began school.

Noah began kindergarten again.

He still had quiet days.

Nobody panicked anymore.

Silence was allowed.

One evening, Elena found Damian repairing Captain Buttons.

“You’re terrible at sewing.”

“I run several corporations.”

“That has nothing to do with sewing.”

“I used to run several other things too.”

“Even less relevant.”

He handed her the needle.

Their fingers touched.

Neither moved away.

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“I want to ask you something.”

She immediately narrowed her eyes.

“If you mention half your fortune—”

“I won’t.”

“Or that ridiculous promise—”

“I won’t.”

He reached into his pocket.

Her expression changed.

“Damian.”

“No audience. No bargain. No debt. No obligation.”

He opened his hand.

Rebecca’s wedding ring rested there.

Elena stared.

“I can’t wear that.”

“I know.”

He closed his fingers.

“It wasn’t the question.”

She exhaled.

“What was?”

“Would you help me choose a new one?”

Elena looked at him.

For once, Damian Mercer looked frightened.

Not crime-boss frightened.

Human frightened.

She smiled.

“Maybe.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“Maybe?”

“You spent years getting everything by command.”

“So?”

“You can survive waiting.”

He laughed.

Then kissed her.

Softly.

Carefully.

He gave her time to step away.

She didn’t.

A small voice interrupted.

“Gross.”

They separated.

Noah stood in the doorway.

Lily stood beside him.

“Very gross,” Lily agreed.

Elena laughed.

Damian pointed upstairs.

“Bed.”

Noah grinned.

“Can Elena read?”

“If Elena wants.”

Elena took both children’s hands.

“I want.”

As they climbed the stairs, Damian remained behind.

He looked at Rebecca’s ring.

Then placed it carefully back into its box.

That chapter belonged to Rebecca.

Whatever came next would belong to Elena.

Six months later, Damian brought Elena to the foundation’s new pediatric center.

A plaque waited beneath a cloth.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing illegal.”

“That answer worries me.”

He removed the cloth.

THE REBECCA MERCER & LILY HART CHILDREN’S HEART AND COMMUNICATION CENTER.

Elena covered her mouth.

Children would receive cardiac care regardless of their parents’ ability to pay.

The second floor housed trauma specialists.

No family would hear that their child’s survival depended on a deposit.

Elena cried.

Damian did not tell her not to.

He simply stood beside her.

Then Noah ran into the lobby.

“Elena!”

She turned.

He held a small velvet box.

Damian closed his eyes.

“Noah.”

“You said today.”

“I said later.”

“You’re slow.”

Lily appeared behind him.

“I told him.”

Elena began laughing.

Noah shoved the box into Damian’s hand.

“Ask.”

Damian stared at his son.

Then at Elena.

He lowered himself onto one knee.

Before he could open the box, Elena touched his hand.

“Wait.”

His face fell.

She leaned closer.

“There’s something I need to tell you first.”

Damian stood slowly.

“What?”

Elena looked toward the entrance.

A woman had just walked into the center.

Grace.

She carried a sealed letter.

Rebecca’s handwriting was on the front.

May you like

And across it were four words:

FOR ELENA’S WEDDING DAY.
