Chapter 9 - The Sister Who Lived In The Shadows

Everyone turned toward the hallway.
Nobody spoke.
Because Adrian wasn't looking at the photograph anymore.
She was looking at the person standing behind us.
My heart started beating faster.
Slowly, I turned around.
The hallway was empty.
No one.
Just darkness.
Alessandro immediately moved closer to me.
"Who did you see?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Her face was pale.
"She was there."
Alessandro looked toward the security team.
"Check the cameras."
The guards moved instantly.
But I couldn't stop staring at the hallway.
Because deep inside...
I knew.
Someone had been watching us.
Someone had been inside the mansion.
Someone who knew every secret before we discovered it.
The security monitors flickered.
A new image appeared.
A hallway camera.
The east wing.
A woman was walking away.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like she had never been hiding.
Alessandro stepped closer to the screen.
"Stop the footage."
The guard froze the image.
The woman turned slightly.
Not enough to show her face.
But enough to reveal something.
A necklace.
A small silver necklace with a symbol engraved on it.
I knew that symbol.
Because my father had drawn it hundreds of times in his old notebooks.
A circle.
A line through the middle.
The same mark from the Duca documents.
My hands became cold.
"That necklace..."
Alessandro looked at me.
"You know it."
I nodded.
"My father had one."
Adrian stepped closer to the monitor.
Her expression changed.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She whispered:
"That necklace belonged to my mother."
Silence.
The woman on the screen disappeared around the corner.
Alessandro turned toward Adrian.
"Your mother?"
Adrian nodded slowly.
"The woman who raised me."
Marco looked confused.
"That's impossible."
Adrian looked at him.
"Why?"
Marco hesitated.
"Because your mother died before you were born."
The words landed heavily.
Adrian's face changed.
Not fear.
Anger.
"You lied to me too."
Marco looked away.
The room became full of broken truths.
Everyone had been lied to.
Everyone had been protected from something.
And everyone had lost something because of it.
Alessandro turned back to the screen.
"Find her."
The guards nodded.
But before they could leave, another sound came from the hallway.
A soft sound.
A baby crying.
Everyone froze.
Mia.
I ran.
Alessandro was already ahead of me.
We reached his room.
The door was open.
It had been locked.
My heart stopped.
Inside, Mia was awake.
But she wasn't crying anymore.
Because someone was standing beside the crib.
A woman.
Her back was facing us.
Alessandro immediately stepped forward.
"Move away from my daughter."
The woman slowly turned.
And I forgot how to breathe.
Because I knew her.
Not from memory.
From the photograph.
The child beside my father.
The girl who was supposed to be my sister.
She was older now.
A woman in her late twenties.
Dark hair.
My father's eyes.
My mother's smile.
My blood.
She looked at me.
And whispered:
"Hello, Elena."
I couldn't move.
Alessandro looked between us.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at Mia.
Then at me.
"My name is Clara."
A pause.
"I'm your sister."
The room went silent.
I shook my head.
"No."
She looked hurt.
But not surprised.
"I knew you would say that."
"That's impossible."
She stepped closer.
"My father made sure you never knew."
My voice trembled.
"My father told me I was an only child."
Clara smiled sadly.
"He told me the same thing."
The words hit me harder.
Two daughters.
One father.
Two different lives.
Both built on lies.
Alessandro watched us carefully.
"How long have you been inside this mansion?"
Clara looked at him.
"Six months."
His expression hardened.
"And nobody noticed?"
She smiled slightly.
"Your security protects the doors."
A pause.
"It doesn't protect the secrets."
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Alessandro stepped closer.
"Why are you here?"
Clara looked at Mia.
"Because she is the reason everything started."
I immediately moved between them.
"No."
Clara looked at me.
"I don't want to hurt her."
"Then why were you watching her?"
Her expression changed.
Sadness.
Regret.
"Because I was trying to protect her."
I almost laughed.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another excuse.
"Everyone says that."
Clara looked at Alessandro.
"Then you understand why I stayed hidden."
Alessandro didn't answer.
Because he did.
He understood more than anyone.
Clara reached into her coat.
Everyone reacted.
Security moved.
But she only pulled out a small envelope.
She handed it to me.
"This was from our father."
I didn't take it immediately.
"Why give it to me now?"
"Because he knew you would need it when the truth came out."
My fingers shook as I accepted it.
The envelope was old.
My name was written on the front.
Not Elena Moretti.
A different name.
A name I had never seen before.
Alessandro noticed.
"What does it say?"
I stared at the handwriting.
Because suddenly...
I remembered.
A childhood memory.
A man sitting beside my bed.
Writing something.
Telling me never to forget who I was.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence.
My entire body went cold.
"What is it?"
Alessandro asked.
I couldn't answer.
Because the name written underneath the sentence...
Was mine.
But not the name I had lived with.
Clara looked at me.
"He changed your identity."
I looked up.
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because you were never supposed to survive."
The room went silent.
Then the lights went out.
Again.
But this time...
Someone screamed.
From downstairs.
A security guard.
"Sir!"
Alessandro immediately grabbed his weapon.
"What happened?"
The guard's voice shook.
"We found someone in the basement."
Alessandro looked toward the door.
"Who?"
The answer came through the speaker.
And every person in the room froze.
Because the guard said:
"The man is claiming to be Elena's father."
A pause.
"But that's not possible."
Alessandro tightened his grip.
"Why?"
The guard whispered:
"Because the man we found..."
May you like
A long silence.
"...has been dead for fifteen years."
