Chapter 2 - The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Know

The stranger stood in the doorway.

And for the first time in years, I saw Alessandro Duca lose control of his expression.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Something worse.

Recognition.

The man standing there was older.

His gray hair was neatly combed back.

His expensive coat looked like it belonged in a boardroom, not inside Alessandro’s private office.

But it was his eyes that made my blood run cold.

Because I had seen those eyes before.

On old photographs.

On documents I was never supposed to find.

The man looked at Alessandro.

Then at Mia.

Then finally at me.

"Elena."

My fingers tightened around my daughter's blanket.

I hadn't heard my name spoken by him in years.

"Marco," I whispered.

Alessandro looked between us.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Someone want to explain why a man I buried five years ago is standing in my office?"

Marco Duca.

Alessandro’s uncle.

The man everyone believed had disappeared after a private plane accident.

The man whose death had changed Alessandro forever.

I had never met him face to face.

But I knew exactly who he was.

Because Marco was the reason I ran.

Eight months earlier, before Mia was born, I had discovered something inside the Duca family records.

Something that was never supposed to be found.

A file.

A photograph.

A name.

And a warning.

Do not trust anyone inside the Duca family.

At the time, I thought the warning was about Alessandro.

I was wrong.

Marco stepped into the office slowly.

His eyes never left Mia.

"She looks exactly like her father."

The room became silent.

Alessandro turned his head.

Very slowly.

"What did you just say?"

Marco didn't answer immediately.

That was the thing about powerful people.

They never rushed.

They let silence do the damage.

Mia sat in Alessandro’s arms, completely unaware of the tension around her.

She touched the buttons of his shirt.

A tiny smile appeared on her face.

And somehow, that innocent little movement made everything more dangerous.

Because Alessandro Duca had spent his entire life building walls.

And my daughter had walked straight through them.

"Elena," Alessandro said.

I looked at him.

"Tell me the truth."

My throat tightened.

I wanted to speak.

I wanted to tell him everything.

About the night we spent together.

About the pregnancy.

About every moment I spent terrified.

But fear had kept me silent for too long.

"Alessandro..."

His jaw tightened.

"No more secrets."

Those three words hurt more than anger.

Because he wasn't threatening me.

He was asking me.

And I didn't know how to answer the one person who deserved the truth.

Marco walked closer.

"You don't understand what you're dealing with."

Alessandro looked at him.

"I understand that you were supposed to be dead."

Marco's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

Alessandro noticed too.

"You knew."

Alessandro's voice became colder.

"You knew she existed."

Marco looked at Mia.

"I knew about the baby."

My heart stopped.

Alessandro looked at me.

The disappointment in his eyes was worse than rage.

"You knew someone knew?"

I lowered my head.

"I thought they would hurt you."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"Tell me what you thought."

I swallowed.

"I thought they would hurt her."

The room froze.

Alessandro looked down at Mia.

For a moment, his anger disappeared.

Because he understood.

Someone had been after his child.

Someone had known.

Someone had waited.

Marco moved toward the desk and placed a small envelope on the table.

"I didn't come here to expose Elena."

Alessandro stared at the envelope.

"Then why are you here?"

Marco looked at him.

"Because someone else knows."

My heartbeat changed.

Alessandro didn't move.

"Who?"

Marco didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Mia.

"The people who wanted her gone eight months ago."

My hands became cold.

Eight months.

The exact time I disappeared.

Alessandro’s eyes sharpened.

"What people?"

Marco reached into his coat.

Alessandro immediately stepped forward.

Security alarms activated.

Within seconds, two guards appeared outside the door.

But Marco only pulled out a photograph.

A photograph he placed face down on the desk.

"Look."

Alessandro stared at it.

Then slowly picked it up.

I couldn't see the front.

But I saw his face change.

The color disappeared from his expression.

"What is this?"

Marco looked at me.

Then said:

"The person who ordered Elena to disappear wasn't your enemy."

A pause.

"It was someone who wanted to protect you."

I felt confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Marco turned toward me.

"The night you left, you weren't running from Alessandro."

My breathing stopped.

"You were running from his father."

Alessandro froze.

"My father is dead."

Marco didn't look away.

"No."

The silence that followed felt impossible.

Because everyone knew Alessandro’s father died years ago.

Everyone knew the official story.

A heart attack.

A funeral.

A closed case.

But Marco looked at Alessandro like he was finally revealing something he had carried for too long.

"Your father never died."

The office felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Alessandro stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Marco placed another item on the desk.

A document.

Old.

Folded.

With a signature at the bottom.

Alessandro picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

I watched his fingers tighten around the paper.

Because whatever he was reading...

It broke something inside him.

"Mia wasn't the only secret hidden from me."

His voice was barely audible.

I looked at him.

"What does it say?"

He didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Then the phone on his desk rang.

Nobody moved.

Because the private office line had only one purpose.

Emergency messages.

Alessandro slowly picked up.

"Speak."

A man's voice came through.

Low.

Distorted.

But clear enough.

"Alessandro Duca."

Everyone in the room froze.

"I know you found the child."

Alessandro's eyes turned toward Mia.

The voice continued.

"And I know Elena told you nothing."

My blood turned cold.

Alessandro gripped the phone harder.

"Who are you?"

A short silence.

Then the stranger answered.

A name.

A name that made Marco step backward.

A name that made Alessandro drop the photograph in his hand.

May you like

Because the voice on the phone belonged to the person everyone believed had been dead for ten years.

"Your mother."
