Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind The Locked Door

The door opened.
Slowly.
Too slowly.
Nobody moved.
Alessandro stood in front of Mia, his body blocking her from whoever was entering.
His hand remained under his jacket.
Ready.
Waiting.
Then a woman stepped into the office.
An older woman.
Her dark hair was streaked with silver.
Her face was thinner than the photographs I had seen.
But her eyes...
Those eyes were the same.
The same eyes Alessandro had.
The same eyes that looked at him like they knew every secret he had ever hidden.
Alessandro froze.
The weapon in his hand lowered slightly.
Because no matter how impossible it was...
He knew her.
"Mother."
The word came out like a question.
Like he was afraid saying it too loudly would make her disappear again.
The woman looked at him.
And tears filled her eyes.
"My son."
Nobody spoke.
Not Marco.
Not me.
Not even Alessandro.
Because after ten years of believing someone was gone, seeing them standing alive in front of you wasn't something the human mind could accept immediately.
Mia looked at the woman.
Then reached toward her.
A tiny movement.
A tiny hand.
The woman noticed.
And her expression changed.
She looked at my daughter.
Then at me.
"You kept her safe."
I swallowed.
"I tried."
She nodded.
"I know."
Alessandro looked between us.
His confusion was turning into anger.
"You two know each other."
The woman didn't deny it.
That made everything worse.
"Yes."
Alessandro stared at her.
"You knew Elena?"
"I did."
"And you knew about my daughter?"
The silence answered before she did.
His jaw tightened.
"How long?"
The woman stepped closer.
"Since before she was born."
I saw the pain hit him.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something deeper.
A feeling of being betrayed by everyone he trusted.
"Everyone knew."
His voice was low.
"Everyone knew except me."
"Alessandro—"
"No."
He looked at his mother.
"You don't get to say my name like nothing happened."
The woman stopped.
For the first time, I saw Alessandro’s strength break.
Just a little.
"I buried you."
His voice cracked.
"I stood beside your grave."
The woman closed her eyes.
"I know."
"You watched me suffer."
"I was trying to protect you."
His expression hardened.
"Stop saying that."
The room became silent.
Because he was tired of that sentence.
Tired of people making decisions for him.
Tired of being told lies were kindness.
The woman looked down.
"I deserved that."
Alessandro looked away.
Mia suddenly made a small noise.
Everyone turned.
She was reaching toward him.
Toward Alessandro.
Like she knew he was the only safe person in the room.
He looked at her.
And the anger disappeared for one second.
Only one.
But it was enough.
His mother noticed.
"You already love her."
Alessandro didn't answer.
Because he didn't know if he was ready to admit it.
The woman smiled sadly.
"Your father would have hated this."
The room changed instantly.
Alessandro looked up.
"What did you say?"
His mother looked at him.
"Your father spent his entire life believing emotions made people weak."
She glanced at Mia.
"But he was wrong."
Alessandro stepped forward.
"What does my father have to do with any of this?"
The woman looked at Marco.
Then back at Alessandro.
"Everything."
Marco looked uncomfortable.
"Not here."
Alessandro turned toward him.
"Actually, I think here is exactly where we do this."
He pointed toward the documents on the desk.
"The lies stop tonight."
Nobody argued.
Because everyone knew he meant it.
His mother walked to the desk.
She picked up the old document Alessandro had found.
"You found this."
It wasn't a question.
Alessandro nodded.
"Your handwriting was on the warning."
She looked at the paper.
"I wrote that."
My heart tightened.
"Why?"
The woman looked at me.
Then at Mia.
"Because I knew what your father planned."
Alessandro’s face changed.
"What did he plan?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward the bookshelf.
Her fingers moved along the wooden edge.
Then stopped.
She pressed a hidden button.
A small section of the wall opened.
Behind it was a narrow compartment.
I had worked in that mansion for years.
I never knew it existed.
The woman removed a black folder.
Dust covered the surface.
But the lock was new.
Alessandro noticed.
"Someone opened this recently."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
She looked at him.
"That's why I came back."
The folder landed on the desk.
Alessandro opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Bank records.
Names.
Lots of names.
I watched his eyes move across the pages.
Then stop.
A photograph fell from the folder.
It landed face up.
I saw it before anyone else.
A younger Alessandro.
Maybe twenty years old.
Standing beside a woman.
A pregnant woman.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized her.
The woman was me.
No.
Not me.
A younger version.
Impossible.
Alessandro picked up the photograph.
His eyes narrowed.
"Explain."
Nobody answered.
The woman looked at me.
And I knew immediately.
There was something I didn't know.
Something nobody had told me.
"Elena."
My hands went cold.
"Yes?"
Her voice softened.
"The night you met Alessandro wasn't the first time your families were connected."
I stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
She looked at the photograph.
"Your father and Alessandro’s father worked together."
I shook my head.
"My father died when I was a child."
She nodded.
"That's what you were told."
The room became silent.
Again.
Another lie.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life that belonged to someone else.
Alessandro looked at me.
"You didn't know?"
I shook my head.
"No."
And for the first time since I entered that office, I saw him believe me completely.
Because we were both victims of the same secret.
His mother opened another page.
"This is why your daughter was never just a child."
I looked at Mia.
My heart raced.
"What does that mean?"
The woman hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Someone has been waiting for her birth."
Alessandro immediately stood.
"No."
His voice became dangerous.
"No one touches my daughter."
His mother looked at him sadly.
"Alessandro."
He turned.
"You don't understand."
She pointed at the final document.
"This isn't about taking Mia away."
She swallowed.
"It's about why someone tried to make sure she was never born."
The lights suddenly went out.
Every screen in the office turned black.
The security alarm didn't sound.
That was the terrifying part.
Someone had disabled it.
Alessandro moved instantly.
He grabbed Mia with one arm and pulled me behind him with the other.
A sound came from the hallway.
A phone vibrating.
Not his.
Not mine.
Marco looked toward the dark corridor.
His face changed.
"Impossible."
Alessandro stared at him.
"Who is it?"
Marco didn't answer.
The phone stopped.
Then started ringing again.
Slowly.
Closer.
Coming from inside the mansion.
The woman who had been dead for ten years looked toward the darkness.
And whispered one name.
"The person who started all of this..."
A shadow moved behind the glass door.
Someone was standing outside.
Someone who had entered without security noticing.
May you like
Someone who knew exactly where to find them.
The door handle began to turn.
