Chapter 5 - The Name Hidden In The Bloodline

The door opened.

But nobody entered.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then a small object slid across the marble floor.

A photograph.

It stopped beside Alessandro’s shoes.

Everyone stared at it.

Alessandro looked down.

And the second he saw the picture, his face changed.

Because it was not a photograph of him.

It was a photograph of Mia.

Taken yesterday.

Inside the mansion.

While she was sleeping.

My stomach dropped.

Someone had been watching my daughter.

Someone had been close enough to capture her without anyone knowing.

Alessandro picked up the picture.

His fingers tightened around the edges.

"Who took this?"

Nobody answered.

That silence was the answer.

His eyes moved to the security system.

Then to Marco.

Then to his mother.

"How long?"

His mother looked away.

"Alessandro..."

"How long has someone been inside my house?"

His voice was quiet.

That was when people should have been afraid.

Because Alessandro never needed to shout.

The quieter he became, the more dangerous he was.

The guards outside the office stepped forward.

"Lock down the mansion."

The order came instantly.

Every door.

Every entrance.

Every camera.

Everything was sealed.

But something bothered me.

The photograph.

It wasn't just a warning.

It was a message.

Someone wanted Alessandro to know they could reach Mia anytime.

I looked at the picture again.

Then I noticed something.

A reflection.

In the corner of the glass behind Mia.

A person standing near the nursery door.

My breath stopped.

"Alessandro."

He looked at me.

I pointed at the photograph.

"Zoom in."

He took it to the security monitor.

The image appeared on the large screen.

Everyone moved closer.

The reflection became clearer.

A man.

Standing in the hallway.

Watching Mia sleep.

And on his hand...

A ring.

I recognized it.

Because I had seen it before.

In old family records.

On a document hidden inside the Duca archives.

A black ring with a silver symbol.

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

"That ring..."

Alessandro turned.

"You know it?"

I nodded slowly.

"I've seen it."

His expression changed.

"Where?"

I looked at Marco.

"I saw it in the documents about your father."

Nobody spoke.

Then Alessandro’s mother closed her eyes.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

"Elena."

Her voice was soft.

"You were never supposed to find those files."

I looked at her.

"But I did."

The room became silent.

And suddenly I understood something.

The warnings.

The missing records.

The people who wanted me gone.

It wasn't because I had a baby.

It was because I knew something.

Something about the Duca family.

Something that could destroy everything.

Alessandro walked toward me.

"What files?"

I hesitated.

Because saying it out loud would make it real.

"I found them three months before Mia was born."

His eyes stayed on mine.

"What did they contain?"

I remembered that night.

The locked room.

The old computer.

The folder with no name.

And the final document.

A document that had made me realize I was in danger.

"Your father had a list."

Alessandro frowned.

"A list of what?"

I looked at Mia.

Then back at him.

"People."

Marco stepped forward.

"Elena."

But Alessandro stopped him.

"No."

His eyes never left mine.

"Let her speak."

I swallowed.

"Your father was tracking everyone connected to the family."

"Why?"

"Because he believed someone inside his own organization was trying to destroy him."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Who?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know."

A lie.

A small one.

But he noticed.

Because Alessandro noticed everything.

"You do know."

My heart tightened.

"I know a name."

Everyone went still.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Say it."

I looked at his mother.

She looked terrified.

Not because of the name.

Because she knew what would happen when I said it.

"It was written at the bottom of the list."

I whispered.

"The person your father believed was responsible..."

A pause.

"The person he was afraid of..."

Alessandro waited.

"Was you."

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Alessandro stared at me.

"What?"

I shook my head quickly.

"No. Not like that."

I grabbed the document from the desk.

"Your father's notes weren't saying you did it."

I opened the page.

"They were saying someone was using your name."

Alessandro took the paper.

His eyes scanned the handwriting.

Then stopped.

Because there was another sentence underneath.

A sentence nobody had noticed before.

His face became pale.

"What does it say?"

Marco asked.

Alessandro didn't answer.

His mother stepped closer.

"Alessandro?"

He looked up.

"The person who destroyed my family..."

His voice lowered.

"Was someone who wanted me to inherit everything."

Nobody understood.

Until he turned the page around.

The handwriting was clear.

One sentence.

One warning.

"The heir must never know who his real enemy is."

The room went silent.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The lies.

The missing people.

The fake death.

The hidden child.

Someone had been controlling the Duca family from the shadows.

And Alessandro had been walking directly into their plan.

The mansion remained locked down for the next hour.

Nobody left.

Nobody entered.

But the fear inside the room grew.

Because the enemy wasn't outside.

They had already been inside.

Alessandro refused to let Mia out of his arms.

He sat in the corner of the office while security searched every room.

I watched him.

The most powerful man in Manhattan.

Holding a baby bottle for the first time.

Trying to understand how to be a father while discovering his entire life was built on secrets.

Mia fell asleep against his chest.

And for a moment...

Everything looked peaceful.

Almost normal.

But normal was something we had lost a long time ago.

His mother sat beside me.

"You need to know something."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She lowered her voice.

"The reason I came back wasn't only because of Alessandro."

I felt a chill.

"What else?"

She looked toward Mia.

"The person who has been watching her..."

A pause.

"Is not trying to kill her."

I frowned.

"Then what do they want?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"They want to take her."

My blood ran cold.

"Why?"

She looked at Alessandro.

"Because Mia is the only person who can reveal the truth about Alessandro’s father."

I didn't understand.

"Mia is eight months old."

"I know."

"Then how?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the office window.

And I saw something change in her expression.

Fear.

Real fear.

I followed her gaze.

The glass reflected the dark hallway behind us.

And someone was standing there.

Someone who shouldn't have been able to enter.

The security system was still active.

Every door was locked.

But the person outside the office raised a hand.

And placed another photograph against the glass.

Alessandro stood up instantly.

The person slowly walked away.

Leaving only the picture behind.

Alessandro opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

He picked up the photograph.

Then his face changed.

Because this time...

The picture wasn't of Mia.

It was of me.

Holding a newborn baby.

A baby that wasn't Mia.

May you like

And on the back of the photograph were four words:

"She was never alone."
