Chapter 7 - The Fall of Harrison Cole

Harrison Cole had always believed he was the smartest person in every room.

It was what made him successful.

It was what made people admire him.

And it was the reason he never saw his own downfall coming.

From the outside, everything still looked perfect.

The photographs showed a confident billionaire businessman returning to America to clear his name.

The interviews showed a tired husband who claimed he had been betrayed.

The headlines painted him as a victim.

A man who lost control of his company because of someone close to him.

But behind the cameras, behind the carefully chosen words, Harrison was terrified.

Because there was one person he could not control anymore.

Chloe.

He sat inside a private suite at a luxury hotel in Manhattan, watching news reports about himself.

Every channel repeated the same story.

Every journalist repeated the same version.

His version.

He leaned back in his chair and allowed himself a small smile.

For a moment, he believed he had won.

The public believed him.

The investors believed him.

The authorities were investigating Chloe instead of him.

Everything was going according to plan.

Until his phone rang.

The smile disappeared.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Who is this?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

“You made a mistake.”

Harrison’s expression changed.

He recognized the voice.

Roman Costa.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“You.”

“Yes.”

Harrison stood.

“What do you want?”

Roman’s voice remained calm.

“The same thing I wanted before.”

A pause.

“The truth.”

Harrison laughed nervously.

“You think you can threaten me?”

“No.”

Roman’s answer came instantly.

“I think you can destroy yourself.”

Harrison froze.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you forgot something.”

“What?”

“You were so focused on escaping that you stopped looking behind you.”

The call ended.

Harrison stared at the phone.

For the first time in days, real fear appeared on his face.

Because Roman Costa was not a man who made empty threats.

If Roman said something was coming…

Something was coming.

Across the city, Chloe stood inside Roman’s office.

But she was no longer the woman who arrived at his mansion afraid and confused.

She stood straighter now.

Stronger.

The documents were spread across the desk.

Evidence of Harrison’s fraud.

Evidence of his betrayal.

Evidence of the life he had hidden from her.

Roman watched as she studied every page.

“You don’t have to read all of it tonight.”

“I do.”

“You need rest.”

Chloe looked up.

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“I spent years trusting him without asking questions.”

A pause.

“I’m not making that mistake again.”

Roman said nothing.

Because he understood.

Chloe was not trying to become someone else.

She was becoming herself.

“What is the plan?” she asked.

Roman placed a file beside hers.

“We expose the financial network.”

She opened it.

“Publicly?”

“Eventually.”

“Why not now?”

“Because Harrison prepared for that.”

Chloe frowned.

“He expects an attack?”

“Yes.”

“Then what do we do?”

Roman looked at the documents.

“We remove his protection.”

“What protection?”

“People who still believe he can survive.”

Chloe understood.

Harrison was not powerful because he was alone.

He was powerful because people believed he was untouchable.

Roman’s strategy was simple.

Break the belief.

Then break the man.

“Who is still helping him?”

Roman pointed to several names.

Investors.

Executives.

Partners.

People who had supported Harrison for years.

Chloe recognized many of them.

“They all knew?”

“Some.”

“And the others?”

“They suspected.”

Her expression hardened.

“They watched.”

Roman nodded.

“Yes.”

That hurt more than she expected.

Because betrayal was easier to understand from an enemy.

Not from people who smiled at you.

Not from people who attended your wedding.

Not from people who congratulated you on your pregnancy.

“They saw me as disposable.”

Roman looked at her.

“No.”

Chloe looked back.

“They saw you as useful.”

The difference was even worse.

The first move came forty-eight hours later.

A financial report was released.

Not by Roman.

Not by Chloe.

By one of Harrison’s former executives.

A man who had spent years working under him.

The report contained information Harrison never expected to become public.

Hidden accounts.

False investments.

Illegal transfers.

The same documents Harrison had tried to erase.

Within hours, the media changed.

The story changed.

The victim became the suspect.

The hero became the liar.

Harrison watched the news from his hotel room.

His face turned pale.

“No.”

He changed channels.

Another report.

Another accusation.

Another piece of evidence.

He threw the remote across the room.

“This isn’t possible.”

His assistant stood near the door, terrified.

“Mr. Cole…”

“Who released this?”

“We don’t know.”

Harrison turned.

“You don’t know?”

The assistant swallowed.

“We are trying to find out.”

Harrison paced.

His entire strategy depended on control.

Control of information.

Control of perception.

Control of people.

And now someone had taken all three away.

Then his assistant received a message.

The color disappeared from his face.

“What?”

Harrison noticed.

“What happened?”

The assistant slowly looked up.

“The investors are pulling out.”

Harrison stopped moving.

“How many?”

“Almost all of them.”

The room became silent.

Harrison understood.

His empire was collapsing.

Not slowly.

Not tomorrow.

Now.

And the worst part?

He knew exactly who was responsible.

Roman Costa.

And Chloe.

That evening, Chloe stood on Roman’s balcony overlooking Manhattan.

The city was beautiful.

Alive.

Unaware of the battle happening beneath its lights.

“You feel guilty.”

Roman’s voice came from behind her.

She turned.

“I’m not surprised you noticed.”

“I notice everything.”

She looked back at the city.

“I keep thinking about who I was before all this.”

Roman waited.

“She trusted too easily.”

“That’s not a weakness.”

“It got me hurt.”

“It also allowed you to love.”

Chloe looked at him.

The answer surprised her.

Because she expected Roman Costa to believe emotions were weaknesses.

Instead, he seemed to understand them better than most.

“I don’t know who I am anymore.”

Roman stepped beside her.

“Yes, you do.”

“How?”

“Because Harrison spent years trying to decide who you were.”

A pause.

“Now you decide.”

The words stayed with her.

For the first time, Chloe thought about the future.

Not the life she lost.

The one she could build.

A future without Harrison.

Without fear.

Without someone controlling every choice.

Her phone rang.

She looked down.

Unknown number.

Her expression changed.

Roman noticed.

“Don’t answer.”

“Why?”

“Because Harrison wants you emotional.”

Chloe looked at the screen.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then Harrison’s voice.

“Chloe.”

Her entire body became still.

After everything…

Hearing his voice still hurt.

“Where are you?”

She said nothing.

“I know you’re with him.”

Roman.

The anger in Harrison’s voice was obvious.

“You think he cares about you?”

Chloe closed her eyes.

Once, those words would have broken her.

Not anymore.

“Harrison.”

Her voice was calm.

“You left me.”

Silence.

“You abandoned me.”

“That’s not what happened.”

“It is.”

“No, Chloe, listen to me—”

“No.”

The word stopped him.

She had never spoken to him like that before.

“I listened to you for four years.”

Her voice became stronger.

“I believed you when everyone else warned me.”

A pause.

“And you used that.”

Harrison became quiet.

Then his voice changed.

Softened.

The old Harrison.

The one who knew how to manipulate.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Chloe almost laughed.

“Protect me?”

“Yes.”

“You framed me.”

“I had no choice.”

Those four words told her everything.

No regret.

No apology.

Only justification.

“You always had a choice.”

Silence.

Then Chloe said the words she never thought she would say.

“I don’t love the man you became.”

Harrison breathed heavily.

“Chloe…”

“And I will not let you hurt our child.”

The call ended.

Roman watched her.

“You did well.”

She looked at him.

“I was shaking.”

“But you still said it.”

Chloe looked toward the city.

Harrison had taken everything from her.

Her trust.

Her marriage.

Her old life.

But he had failed at one thing.

He had failed to destroy her.

And now the world was finally seeing him for who he truly was.

A man who built an empire on lies.

And a man who was about to lose everything because of the truth.

Across Manhattan, Harrison Cole stood alone in his hotel room.

May you like

For the first time in his life…

Nobody was coming to save him.
