Chapter 1 - The Flight That Left Her Behind

The last thing Chloe Cole expected to lose that night was the man she had spent four years loving.

She had imagined many things about the final months of her pregnancy. She imagined decorating the nursery with tiny white furniture. She imagined Harrison placing his hand on her stomach every morning, smiling when their baby moved. She imagined a quiet escape from the chaos of their billionaire lifestyle, just the two of them before their daughter arrived.

She never imagined standing alone on a freezing airport runway, watching the father of her unborn child fly away without her.

The winter wind at Teterboro Airport cut through Chloe’s light blue cashmere coat like a blade. Snow clouds covered the sky above New Jersey, turning the afternoon into a cold gray blur. The private terminal lights reflected across the wet pavement, creating long golden streaks beneath her feet.

Six months pregnant, Chloe stood beside the private aircraft parking area with one hand resting protectively over her stomach.

Her other hand held her phone.

She had called Harrison three times.

Three times.

Every call went directly to voicemail.

She stared at the screen, hoping his name would appear again. Hoping he would call back and laugh, telling her she had misunderstood everything.

But the silence was louder than any answer.

Behind her, the Gulfstream G650 that had been supposed to take them to Aspen was already disappearing into the distance.

Her husband was on that plane.

She was not.

A few minutes earlier, everything had seemed normal.

Almost.

Harrison Cole had always been a man who controlled every detail of his life. As the CEO of Cole Logistics, one of the largest shipping companies on the East Coast, he was known for his confidence, intelligence, and ability to solve impossible problems.

That was the man Chloe fell in love with.

The man who once drove through a snowstorm because she casually mentioned craving a specific dessert.

The man who held her hand during every doctor appointment.

The man who cried when they heard their baby’s heartbeat for the first time.

But over the last month, something had changed.

Harrison stopped looking at her the way he used to.

His phone was always locked.

His office door was always closed.

His conversations became shorter.

And whenever Chloe asked if something was wrong, he always gave the same answer.

“Everything is fine.”

But everything was not fine.

She knew it.

A wife always knew when something was wrong.

That morning, Harrison had appeared unusually nervous while preparing for their private trip.

“Just a few days away,” he had told her, forcing a smile. “No business. No meetings. Just us.”

Chloe had believed him.

She wanted to believe him.

Because she was tired of feeling like she was competing with a company, a fortune, and a world that never stopped demanding his attention.

When they arrived at Teterboro Airport, she noticed the first strange thing.

Harrison kept looking over his shoulder.

Not casually.

Not like someone checking the time.

Like someone expecting someone to appear.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And the color drained from his face.

“Who is it?” Chloe asked.

“No one.”

The answer came too quickly.

Before she could ask again, Harrison walked several steps away and answered.

His voice became sharp.

Angry.

Afraid.

Chloe could not hear the other person, but she could see her husband changing.

The confident billionaire disappeared.

For the first time in years, she saw fear in his eyes.

After the call ended, Harrison stood frozen beside the stairs of the private jet.

Then he looked at her.

And Chloe immediately felt something was wrong.

“Harrison?”

He walked toward her quickly.

Too quickly.

“There’s a problem with the flight manifest,” he said.

His voice sounded rehearsed.

A sentence prepared before he ever reached her.

“What problem?”

“I need to handle something inside the terminal.”

Chloe frowned.

“Can’t I come with you?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

His expression changed when he realized how harsh he sounded.

“No, I mean… the cabin isn’t ready yet. Just wait here. Two minutes.”

She looked toward the plane.

The flight crew was already moving.

“Harrison, it’s freezing.”

“I know.”

She placed both hands over her stomach.

“Our baby is cold.”

For a brief moment, guilt crossed his face.

A tiny crack in the mask.

Chloe noticed.

“Harrison,” she whispered. “What’s happening?”

He looked at her.

And for one second, she thought he might tell her the truth.

Instead, he kissed her forehead.

A fake kiss.

A goodbye disguised as affection.

“Trust me.”

Those were the last words he said to her.

Then he turned around.

And walked away.

Chloe watched him climb the stairs.

She watched the flight attendant close the cabin door.

She watched the small window beside his seat become dark.

Something inside her began screaming.

“Harrison.”

She stepped forward.

But he did not turn around.

The engines started.

The sound grew louder.

The powerful force of the aircraft pushed against the frozen air.

Chloe covered her ears.

Then she saw something that broke her heart.

The plane was moving.

Without her.

At first, her mind refused to understand.

“No…”

She shook her head.

“No, he wouldn’t.”

But the Gulfstream continued toward the runway.

The man she loved was leaving.

Her husband.

The father of her child.

Leaving her alone.

A sudden blast of wind from the engines pushed her backward.

Her coat moved violently.

Her hair whipped across her face.

She stood there frozen as the jet accelerated into the distance.

The love she had trusted for four years disappeared into the clouds.

Only then did the truth begin to enter her mind.

This was not an accident.

This was planned.

Her fingers trembled as she opened her phone again.

She called Harrison.

Voicemail.

Again.

Voicemail.

She looked around the empty runway.

The private terminal suddenly felt enormous.

Cold.

Unforgiving.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out her wallet.

Her passport was missing.

Her confusion turned into fear.

She searched again.

Nothing.

Then she checked her bank account.

The app loaded.

Her face went pale.

The joint account she shared with Harrison had been emptied.

Every dollar.

Gone.

A cold feeling spread through her chest.

This was bigger than a fight.

Bigger than a misunderstanding.

Someone had carefully removed every way she could survive.

Chloe placed one hand against the side of her stomach.

Her baby moved.

That small movement almost broke her.

Because suddenly, she was not just a betrayed wife.

She was a mother who needed to protect her child.

“I’m going to figure this out,” she whispered.

Her voice shook.

But she forced herself to stand straight.

Then the sound of tires interrupted the silence.

At first, she thought it was airport security.

But the vehicles moving across the runway were not marked.

Four black SUVs entered the private area.

Matte black.

Expensive.

Controlled.

They moved together like a single machine.

Chloe stepped backward.

Her hand immediately covered her stomach.

The vehicles surrounded her.

The doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Not pilots.

Not security.

Not police.

They wore dark tailored coats.

Their expressions were emotionless.

Dangerous.

A dozen men stood silently in the freezing wind.

Then the door of the first SUV opened.

And a man stepped out.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

He was tall.

Powerful.

Calm.

The kind of man who did not need to raise his voice to command attention.

He wore a black cashmere coat over a perfectly fitted charcoal suit.

His dark hair was neatly pushed back.

His eyes were cold and unreadable.

He looked toward the sky.

Toward the direction where Harrison’s plane had disappeared.

Then he looked at Chloe.

And in that moment, she realized something terrifying.

The man standing in front of her was not here by coincidence.

He knew exactly who she was.

He walked closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Stopping several feet away.

His voice was deep and controlled.

“He actually did it.”

Chloe stared at him.

“Who are you?”

The man looked once more at the empty sky.

Then back at her.

“Your husband’s worst mistake.”

The freezing wind moved between them.

Chloe tightened her coat around herself.

“What do you want from me?”

The man studied her face.

Then his eyes lowered briefly to her pregnant stomach.

Not with cruelty.

With understanding.

“My name is Roman Costa.”

The name meant nothing to Chloe.

But the reaction of the men around her told her everything.

They knew.

They feared him.

Roman looked toward the runway where Harrison’s jet had vanished.

Then he spoke the words that changed Chloe’s life forever.

“Your husband didn’t leave you behind.”

A pause.

“He abandoned you.”

Chloe’s heart stopped.

Roman took one step closer.

“And he did it because he believed I would come for you.”

The world seemed to go silent.

Chloe stared at the stranger in front of her.

The most dangerous man she had ever seen.

The man her husband had apparently been running from.

And for the first time that night, she understood something terrifying.

May you like

Harrison Cole had not left her by accident.

He had left her as part of a deal.
