Chapter 6 - The Truth Hidden Behind the Empire

Chloe did not sleep.

Not after what Roman had told her.

Not after hearing the fear in his voice when he mentioned her child.

The strange thing was that Roman Costa was not a man who appeared afraid of anything.

She had seen him walk into a room and silence everyone without saying a word.

She had seen powerful men lower their voices when speaking to him.

She had seen security teams move around him like he was the center of a storm.

But last night, when he said Harrison knew something about their child’s future…

Roman had looked different.

Not afraid of danger.

Afraid of the truth.

The morning arrived slowly.

Gray winter light entered through the large windows of the guest room.

Chloe sat on the edge of the bed, holding a cup of untouched tea.

Her mind kept returning to the same question.

What could Harrison possibly know about their baby that she didn’t?

She touched her stomach gently.

The thought terrified her.

A child was supposed to be the beginning of a family.

Not a secret.

Not a weapon.

Not a reason for someone to run.

A soft knock came at the door.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

Roman stood there.

He looked exactly the same as always.

Perfect suit.

Controlled expression.

But Chloe noticed the exhaustion in his eyes.

“You said you would tell me everything.”

Roman nodded.

“Yes.”

He stepped inside.

Behind him, one of his employees placed a folder on the table and quietly left.

Roman closed the door.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Chloe broke the silence.

“Start.”

Roman looked at her.

“Your husband’s company was never just a logistics company.”

Chloe frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Cole Logistics handled legitimate shipping.”

A pause.

“But it also became involved in illegal operations.”

She stared at him.

“No.”

Roman did not react.

“Harrison created a second network hidden beneath the public company.”

Chloe shook her head.

“I knew every part of his business.”

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

But firm.

“You knew what he wanted you to know.”

Those words hurt because they were true.

Roman opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

Chloe looked through them.

Her face slowly changed.

“These are…”

“Records of shipments.”

She looked closer.

The dates.

The locations.

The signatures.

Some of them belonged to Harrison.

Some of them belonged to people she recognized.

Business partners.

Investors.

Friends.

People who had smiled at her during charity events.

“You’re saying all these people were involved?”

Roman nodded.

“Yes.”

Chloe placed the documents down.

“How long?”

“Years.”

The answer made her feel sick.

Years.

While she was planning their future, Harrison was building another life.

A hidden one.

“What does this have to do with my baby?”

Roman became quiet.

Then he pulled out another document.

“This.”

Chloe looked down.

At first, she did not understand.

Then she saw her name.

Her medical records.

Her pregnancy information.

Her hands immediately tightened.

“Where did you get this?”

Roman’s expression hardened.

“Harrison’s private files.”

“Why would he have my medical records?”

“That is the question.”

Chloe looked through the pages.

Everything was there.

Doctor visits.

Due dates.

Blood tests.

Even information about the baby’s development.

A cold feeling moved through her.

“He was watching me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Roman looked at the documents.

“Because Harrison discovered something before you did.”

Chloe looked up.

“What?”

Roman took a breath.

“Your child has a rare genetic inheritance.”

The room became silent.

Chloe stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“Your family history.”

She shook her head.

“My family is normal.”

Roman looked at her.

“Your biological father was not the man you grew up believing he was.”

Chloe froze.

“What?”

“Harrison found records about your father.”

She stared at him.

“No.”

Roman continued.

“Your father was involved in a private investment network before he disappeared.”

Chloe’s heart raced.

“My father died when I was a child.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could he be connected to this?”

“Because he left something behind.”

Roman opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

A man.

Older.

Standing beside several businessmen.

Chloe looked at the picture.

Her breath stopped.

She recognized him.

Not because she remembered his face.

But because of the small details.

The watch.

The ring.

The expression.

“That’s my father.”

Roman nodded.

“Yes.”

Chloe looked confused.

“What does he have to do with Harrison?”

“Your father was one of the original investors behind several shipping companies.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

“Your father created a trust.”

Roman placed another document in front of her.

“A private trust that would transfer control of certain assets to his biological heir.”

Chloe stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“And my child?”

Roman looked at her.

“The trust activates when your child is born.”

Everything stopped.

The room.

The sound outside.

Even her breathing.

“Harrison knew.”

“Yes.”

“He wasn’t just running away.”

“No.”

Roman’s voice became colder.

“He was trying to take control.”

Chloe slowly understood.

The debt.

The fraud.

The fake documents.

The escape.

It was not only about money.

Harrison had discovered that her unborn child represented something far more valuable.

An inheritance.

A fortune.

A legacy.

And he had decided that if he could not control it…

He would destroy the people connected to it.

Chloe stood suddenly.

“He was going to hurt my baby.”

Roman’s expression changed.

“He was going to use your child as leverage.”

The anger inside her finally broke through.

A tear escaped.

Not from sadness.

From rage.

“I loved him.”

Roman said nothing.

“I defended him.”

Still nothing.

“I thought he was protecting us.”

Her voice cracked.

“And he was protecting himself.”

Roman stepped closer.

But he did not touch her.

He understood enough not to.

“You trusted the wrong person.”

Chloe looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I ignored the truth.”

Roman watched her.

There was something powerful about the way she stood there.

Broken.

But standing.

“I should have seen it.”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“Harrison spent years building that illusion.”

Chloe looked away.

“He knew exactly who I was.”

Roman nodded.

“Yes.”

“And he used it.”

“Yes.”

She wiped her tears.

Then she looked at the documents again.

“What happens now?”

Roman looked at her.

“Now we stop him.”

The confidence in his voice surprised her.

“We?”

“Yes.”

Chloe stared.

“Why?”

Roman was silent.

Then he answered.

“Because Harrison Cole made two mistakes.”

“What mistakes?”

“He underestimated you.”

A pause.

“And he underestimated me.”

For the first time since arriving at Roman’s mansion, Chloe felt something other than fear.

Not safety.

Not yet.

But direction.

A purpose.

She looked at the documents.

At the evidence.

At the truth Harrison had tried to bury.

“I want to fight back.”

Roman nodded slightly.

“I expected that.”

“You expected?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because you walked into this house afraid.”

He looked at her.

“But you never asked me to save you.”

Chloe said nothing.

Because he was right.

She had asked for answers.

Not rescue.

Roman gathered the documents.

“Then we start today.”

“With what?”

“Taking back your name.”

A phone vibrated.

Roman checked the screen.

His expression changed.

Chloe noticed.

“What happened?”

Roman looked at the message.

Then at her.

“Harrison made another move.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What did he do?”

Roman handed her the phone.

On the screen was a breaking news alert.

HARRISON COLE ANNOUNCES HE WILL RETURN TO CLEAR HIS NAME

Below it was a photo.

Harrison smiling.

Looking confident.

Looking innocent.

The same man who abandoned her.

The same man who framed her.

Chloe stared at the image.

Then something changed.

The fear disappeared.

The heartbreak disappeared.

Only determination remained.

“He thinks he won.”

Roman looked at her.

“Yes.”

Chloe placed the phone down.

“Then he doesn’t know me at all.”

For the first time, Roman Costa saw something he rarely saw.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

A woman who had been pushed too far.

And refused to fall.

Outside, the city continued moving.
