Chapter 3 - The Billionaire’s Secret Crime

The city lights of Manhattan blurred behind the tinted windows of the armored SUV.

Chloe Cole sat silently in the back seat, watching the world pass by as if she were looking at someone else’s life.

Only a few hours ago, she had been a wife.

A woman preparing for a romantic trip with the man she loved.

A mother-to-be excited about the future.

Now she was a woman with no access to her money, no passport, no husband, and a stranger beside her who claimed everything she believed about her marriage was a lie.

She rested her hand over her stomach.

The baby moved gently beneath her palm.

That small movement reminded her of one thing.

She could not fall apart.

Not now.

Not when someone else depended on her.

Across from her, Roman Costa remained completely still.

He looked out the window, his expression unreadable.

The silence between them was heavy.

Chloe wanted to ask questions.

Hundreds of them.

But every time she opened her mouth, another memory of Harrison stopped her.

The way he kissed her forehead before leaving.

The way he told her to trust him.

The way he looked away when she asked if something was wrong.

Those moments no longer felt like love.

They felt like preparation.

Finally, Chloe broke the silence.

“How long have you known?”

Roman turned his eyes toward her.

“Known what?”

“That my husband was planning this.”

Roman studied her.

“Not long.”

“That’s not an answer.”

His expression remained calm.

“A few weeks.”

Chloe’s chest tightened.

“A few weeks?”

She stared at him.

“You knew something was wrong with him for weeks and you said nothing?”

Roman leaned back.

“I was investigating him.”

“Investigating him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A long pause followed.

Then Roman answered.

“Because he stole from me.”

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of everything that happened.

Chloe looked down at the documents still sitting in her hands.

The numbers.

The transfers.

The evidence.

She wanted to believe Harrison was innocent.

She wanted to believe Roman was manipulating her.

But every piece of information led back to the same painful truth.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

“My husband built a company from nothing,” Chloe whispered.

Roman watched her carefully.

“He built an image.”

She looked up.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Harrison Cole was very good at making people believe what he wanted them to believe.”

Chloe said nothing.

Because deep down, she knew.

Harrison had always been charming.

Always convincing.

He knew exactly what to say.

Exactly when to smile.

Exactly how to make people trust him.

Including her.

Roman continued.

“Cole Logistics looked successful because investors believed in the story.”

“And the reality?”

“The reality was debt.”

Chloe swallowed.

“How much?”

“Hundreds of millions.”

The answer made her freeze.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

Roman looked at the city outside.

“Rich people rarely lose everything overnight, Mrs. Cole.”

His voice was quiet.

“They lose it slowly. One bad decision at a time. One secret at a time.”

Chloe looked away.

She remembered the changes.

The expensive dinners he suddenly canceled.

The meetings he refused to explain.

The nights he came home hours late.

She had asked.

He had smiled.

He had touched her cheek.

And he had told her she worried too much.

Now those memories felt like warnings she ignored.

“What was he trying to do?”

Roman looked back at her.

“Escape.”

“To where?”

“Somewhere without extradition.”

The words made her heart sink.

“You mean he planned this?”

“Yes.”

“He planned to leave me?”

Roman didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt more than the truth.

“Yes.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

For a moment, she allowed herself to feel everything.

The anger.

The humiliation.

The heartbreak.

Four years.

Four years of marriage.

All reduced to a business decision.

A transaction.

She wiped away the tears before they could fall.

Roman noticed.

“You’re angry.”

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“I’m trying not to be destroyed.”

Something shifted in Roman’s expression.

Almost impossible to notice.

But it was there.

Respect.

“You’re handling this better than most people would.”

Chloe gave a bitter laugh.

“I don’t have the luxury of breaking down.”

Her hand moved to her stomach.

“My baby doesn’t care that my husband betrayed me.”

Roman looked at her.

“He should.”

“What?”

“He should care.”

His voice became colder.

“Any man who abandons his family deserves nothing.”

Chloe looked at him carefully.

For a moment, she saw something beneath the ruthless exterior.

A memory.

A wound.

Something personal.

But before she could ask, the SUV slowed.

They had arrived.

Chloe looked outside.

The vehicle had entered a private property surrounded by tall gates.

Beyond them stood a massive estate overlooking the city.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Secure.

Too secure.

She immediately became cautious.

“Where are we?”

“My home.”

Her eyes widened.

“No.”

Roman looked at her.

“No?”

“I’m not staying in your house.”

“You don’t have anywhere else.”

The bluntness of the answer irritated her.

“I’ll find somewhere.”

“With what money?”

She had no response.

Roman continued.

“Your accounts are frozen.”

He paused.

“Your husband made sure you would have nowhere to go.”

Chloe looked away.

The truth hurt because it was true.

The SUV stopped.

The driver opened the door.

Roman stepped out first.

Then he waited.

He didn’t order her.

He didn’t force her.

He simply waited.

After a moment, Chloe stepped out.

The mansion was silent.

Not empty.

Silent.

People were everywhere, but nobody made unnecessary noise.

Security personnel moved quietly.

Staff members lowered their heads when Roman passed.

Again, Chloe noticed the same thing.

Fear.

Everyone feared him.

Inside the house, Roman led her through a large hallway.

Paintings lined the walls.

Furniture looked expensive but cold.

The place felt less like a home.

More like a fortress.

A woman in her fifties approached them.

“Mr. Costa.”

Roman nodded.

“This is Mrs. Cole.”

The woman looked at Chloe.

Her expression softened immediately when she noticed the pregnancy.

“Prepare the guest room,” Roman said.

“And contact the doctor.”

“I’m not sick,” Chloe interrupted.

Roman looked at her.

“You’ve been standing outside in freezing weather while pregnant.”

“I said I’m fine.”

“That doesn’t mean you are.”

Chloe wanted to argue.

But exhaustion suddenly hit her.

The adrenaline was disappearing.

The fear.

The anger.

Everything.

Her body was finally catching up.

She looked down.

Her hands were shaking.

Roman noticed.

His voice became quieter.

“Rest.”

She looked at him.

“Why are you doing this?”

Roman didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the window overlooking the city.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“Because your husband thought you were disposable.”

Chloe stared at him.

“And?”

Roman looked back.

“I don’t.”

The answer surprised her.

Not because it was emotional.

Because it wasn’t.

Roman Costa did not seem like a man who said comforting things.

He said things because he meant them.

A phone rang.

One of Roman’s men answered quickly.

The man's expression changed.

He walked toward Roman.

“Sir.”

Roman turned.

“What happened?”

The man lowered his voice.

But Chloe still noticed Roman’s expression change.

A colder version of him appeared.

“What?”

“The federal investigation started early.”

Roman’s eyes narrowed.

“Already?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And there’s something else.”

Roman looked at him.

The man hesitated.

“Harrison Cole has released a statement.”

Chloe felt her heart drop.

“What statement?”

The man looked at Roman.

Then at Chloe.

Roman nodded.

“Tell her.”

The man swallowed.

“He claims his wife was involved in the financial crimes.”

The room went silent.

Chloe felt like the air disappeared.

“No.”

Her voice barely existed.

“He blamed me?”

Nobody answered.

Because they didn’t need to.

The truth was already clear.

Harrison had not only abandoned her.

He had prepared a story where she became the villain.

Roman watched the pain cross her face.

Then something dangerous appeared in his eyes.

Not anger toward Chloe.

Anger for her.

“Now you understand.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Understand what?”

Roman’s voice became cold.

“That your husband didn’t run away from his problems.”

A pause.

“He created a new one.”

The room remained silent.

Outside, snow continued falling over Manhattan.

Somewhere far away, Harrison Cole believed he had escaped.

He believed Chloe would take the blame.

He believed money and distance could erase everything.

But he had made one mistake.

May you like

He had underestimated the woman he betrayed.

And he had underestimated the man standing beside her.
