Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Refused To Break

The rain had stopped by the time Roman Costa returned.
But the storm inside Chloe Cole had only grown stronger.
She sat in the quiet corner of the mansion’s library, surrounded by thousands of books she had no interest in reading. The room was warm, elegant, and peaceful.
A complete contrast to the chaos happening in her life.
On the large screen mounted against the wall, news channels continued repeating the same story.
Harrison Cole.
Financial fraud.
Missing billionaire.
The betrayed wife.
Except they were telling the wrong story.
Every time Chloe saw her own name connected to the scandal, something inside her tightened.
Not because she was afraid of losing money.
Not because she was afraid of losing her social status.
Those things no longer mattered.
She was afraid of losing the truth.
Because once a lie spread far enough, people stopped asking whether it was real.
They simply believed it.
A knock sounded on the library door.
Chloe looked up.
Roman entered.
His black coat was gone.
He wore only a dark suit, his expression as controlled as always.
But Chloe noticed something different.
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Mentally.
Like the information he had discovered carried a weight even he did not want to carry.
“Did you find him?”
Roman closed the door behind him.
“Not yet.”
Chloe nodded slowly.
“But you found something.”
Roman looked at her.
“Yes.”
He placed a small file on the table.
“There was someone working with Harrison.”
Chloe looked at the file.
“Someone from his company?”
“Yes.”
“Did they know about the fraud?”
“They knew enough.”
She opened the file.
Inside was a photograph of a man in his fifties.
“Who is he?”
“Daniel Mercer.”
Roman sat across from her.
“Former chief financial officer of Cole Logistics.”
Chloe stared at the picture.
“I know him.”
Roman raised his eyes.
“You do?”
“He worked with Harrison for years.”
She paused.
“He was always around during business dinners.”
“And did Harrison trust him?”
Chloe thought about it.
“Yes.”
Roman leaned back.
“That was his mistake.”
Chloe looked at him.
“What happened?”
Roman was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“Daniel Mercer was the person who moved the money.”
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
“So Harrison wasn’t alone.”
“No.”
The realization hit her.
For weeks, Harrison had been planning his escape.
But he had not built the entire plan himself.
There were people helping him.
People who knew Chloe could be destroyed.
People who watched it happen.
“Where is Daniel now?”
Roman looked toward the window.
“Gone.”
“Like Harrison?”
“Yes.”
Chloe felt anger rising.
Everyone involved had disappeared.
Everyone except her.
She closed the file.
“They all ran.”
Roman watched her.
“Yes.”
“And they left me behind.”
“Yes.”
The simple answer hurt.
But Chloe no longer cried.
Something inside her had changed.
The woman who stood on the airport runway was gone.
That woman was still hoping Harrison would call.
Still believing there was an explanation.
This woman knew better.
“What happens next?”
Roman studied her.
“You rest.”
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“Chloe.”
“I said no.”
Her voice was stronger than before.
Roman noticed.
“I need to understand everything.”
“You need to protect your health.”
“I need to protect my child.”
The room became silent.
Roman looked at her carefully.
Chloe stood.
“My husband tried to make me disappear.”
Her voice trembled slightly.
“But he made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He forgot I would fight.”
For a moment, Roman said nothing.
Then something rare happened.
A small expression crossed his face.
Approval.
“You’re different than I expected.”
Chloe looked at him.
“What did you expect?”
Roman answered honestly.
“Someone broken.”
She looked away.
“Maybe I am.”
“No.”
His response was immediate.
“You’re hurt.”
A pause.
“But you’re not broken.”
The words stayed with her.
Because nobody had said that since everything collapsed.
Not her friends.
Not her lawyers.
Not even herself.
Roman walked toward the desk.
“I arranged a meeting with a legal team tomorrow.”
Chloe looked surprised.
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Harrison built his defense around destroying yours.”
She frowned.
“I don’t have money for lawyers.”
“You don’t need to worry about that.”
Chloe immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Roman looked at her.
“No?”
“I’m not becoming another person who owes you something.”
The statement caught him off guard.
Most people accepted help from Roman Costa without question.
They saw power.
They saw protection.
They saw opportunity.
Chloe saw a debt.
Roman studied her.
“You think everything has a price.”
“In my world?”
She looked around the mansion.
“In this world? Yes.”
For the first time, Roman looked almost amused.
“You think my help comes with a condition?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s the difference between you and everyone else.”
“What difference?”
“You still ask.”
Chloe did not understand.
Roman continued.
“Most people assume.”
He looked at the file.
“They assume power means cruelty.”
A pause.
“They assume fear means evil.”
“And are they wrong?”
Roman looked at her.
“Sometimes.”
The answer was not a denial.
It was honesty.
That was something Chloe was beginning to notice about him.
Roman Costa was dangerous.
But he was rarely dishonest.
Later that night, Chloe woke up suddenly.
The room was dark.
For a few seconds, she forgot where she was.
Then everything returned.
The airport.
The plane.
Harrison.
The betrayal.
She sat up quickly.
Her breathing became uneven.
She placed both hands on her stomach.
“I’m okay,” she whispered.
She wasn’t sure if she was saying it to herself or the baby.
A few minutes later, she stepped into the hallway.
The mansion was quiet.
She walked toward the kitchen, hoping to find water.
But as she passed the main hall, she noticed a light coming from Roman’s office.
The door was slightly open.
She did not intend to listen.
But then she heard Harrison’s name.
She stopped.
Inside, Roman was speaking on the phone.
“No.”
A pause.
“I don’t care what he offered you.”
Another pause.
“Find him.”
Chloe froze.
Roman’s voice became colder.
“He betrayed his wife.”
Silence.
Then:
“And he endangered my entire organization.”
Chloe stepped closer.
Another voice came through the phone, too quiet for her to hear.
Roman listened.
Then his expression changed.
“What do you mean, the child?”
Chloe’s heart stopped.
She moved closer.
The baby.
Why were they talking about her baby?
Roman turned slightly.
And saw her standing there.
The call ended immediately.
“Chloe.”
She looked at him.
“What did he mean?”
Roman did not answer.
That scared her more than anything.
“What did he mean about my child?”
Roman looked away for a moment.
Then back at her.
“There are things Harrison kept from you.”
Her chest tightened.
“What things?”
Roman hesitated.
And Chloe realized something.
For the first time since meeting him…
Roman Costa was afraid of the answer.
“Tell me.”
His expression hardened.
“Your husband wasn’t just trying to escape debt.”
“Then what was he doing?”
Roman walked toward her slowly.
“He was trying to erase every connection to his past.”
Chloe felt a chill.
“And our baby?”
Roman stopped.
The silence answered before he did.
“Harrison knew something.”
“What?”
Roman looked directly into her eyes.
“Something about your child’s future.”
The hallway felt colder.
Chloe shook her head.
“I don’t understand.”
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
Roman took a breath.
And for the first time, Chloe saw the burden he carried.
Not as a mafia leader.
Not as a powerful man.
As someone who knew a truth she had never been allowed to see.
“Tomorrow,” Roman said quietly.
“I’ll tell you everything.”
Chloe stared at him.
“Why not now?”
Because Roman Costa had faced enemies, criminals, and people who wanted him dead.
But tonight, standing in front of a betrayed pregnant woman…
He looked like a man preparing to reveal something that would change her life forever.
“Because once you know the truth…”
Roman paused.
“There is no going back.”
And Chloe realized that losing Harrison Cole was only the beginning.
The real story had not started with the plane leaving the runway.
May you like
It had started long before.
With a secret her husband had spent years hiding.
